  1. Happy Christmas, Here's Pete the christmas llama come to wish you happy christmas
  2. Nah, merely northeners just getting on wit' job.
  3. Ah, but how it looks in a photo and how it looks in real life can differ. It was the wet / dry looking sections of road that I liked.
  4. With the pavements in white, add a bit of snow to the roofs and it looks like a sunny winters day, gritted roads drying, snow melting etc
  5. Adding a roof rack made from paperclips to an Oxford Diecast Allegro Estate...

It's going to have kayaks on top, it's a champagne gold which isn't quite right...

  6. Taking a break from (2mm) reality and into the literal. Hopefully the loft conversion, part of which will house the layout should be complete by March. I've been asking for memories, photographs and suggestions of what needs to be included in a seaside resort town after the war. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/70992-tell-me-about-1940s-50s-seaside-resort-towns/ Milliedale on Sea, as already said, escaped WW2 unscathed physically, it's pier intact but with the addition of a pill box on the beach (now an ice cream hut) So, what will feature in the planning of Milliedale on Sea? The afore mentioned pier, lido, funicular railway and Butlins St Leonards Church and school (My Grandfather was called Leonard and always instilled the value of education) Some terraced housing just behind the railway Station hotel station (of course) Woolworth's Dance hall (on the pier) B&B's along the front (georgian terrace?) Theater / cinema? Donkeys and other beach related items.
  7. I raised my monitor at work by about 4 inches which has helped me, i sometimes get a stiff neck if I'm using a laptop a bit too much, laptops are a compromised design, the monitor is too close to the keyboard
  8. Cleethorpes isn't too far removed from what I'm looking for, (see signature Milliedale on Sea) the plan is to have the railway raised up (I'll get annoyed with a level crossing and hope to have some moving vehicles) so that it goes over the roads leading back into the terraced housing and town, the raised up arches / embankment being behind the row of housing along the front, leading from out of town being just B&B to becoming shop fronts, the main focus of town is right at one end, back slightly from the front. So, on the layout there will be: Butlins up on the cliff pier lido station hotel Theater / cinema formal garden funicular railway anything else quintessentially British seaside resort?
  9. While they're leaning over the control pannel prod them with the electric probe and see if the points change
  10. The blue looks the correct colour to me My uncle owns a garage and bought a new (second hand) lift about 10 years ago - its not that colour now! Brake dust (careful of asbestos on classic cars - so that's the entire Heartbeat fleet then) oil, road muck, flakes or rust etc all combine to make a good smudgey black coating not unlike on the railway. Don't forget the mucky hand prints on the control box nor the 12mm spanner (it's always a 12mm on there, no idea why although on heartbeat it's likely to be the imperial equivalent or even whitworth!)
  11. Wouldn't it be great if you could make the narrow boats drift along the canal above the town? I have seen moving canal boats, a stretch of canal between two tunnels (much like the railway below it) magnets on a belt between two pulleys, magnet on front of canal boat which had a pipe cleaner recessed slightly into the bottom of the boat so it glides smoothly along the varnished water.
  12. I'm going to have the opposite issue, the railway is raised up so roads go under it
  13. Never paid much attention to phone masts but it looks about right with the detail you've fitted. Sorry to hear about your accident - what is it pilots say? A good landing is one you walk away from a great one is where you can re-use the plane Think it's the season for it, short days and everyone rushing around like mad, had two incidents yesterday on the bike, one someone changed lanes into me on the motorway and the other changed lanes across me exiting a roundabout - I stopped with 2 inch spare... How's you and your lad?
  14. I was born in a house in Barnsley my parents were trying to sell. Due to Scarigill vs Thatcher they have just managed to sell it 30 years later They gave up for a while and stayed put. Guess I'm a young un
  15. Thanks to all who contributed before, I've come to stir the embers a bit on this topic as I've got a good idea of my track plan and topography for the layout, I now need to make the town believable. Thanks to everyone who's posted photos and linked to videos - my memories of the seaside only differ from how things are now in that the sweets had E numbers in them, mars bars were 35p and mum wouldn't let me drink fizzy pop. So, I don't remember before the metal clad buildings lining the seafront, would there have been B&B's in amongst amusement arcades and chip shops etc? Thanks again everyone.
  16. Following the sketch, I thought it might be interesting to look at how the railway first expanded in Millideale-on-Sea The original act of parliament was for two lines running between the cliffs of Milliedale-on-Sea as a route north towards Cumbria A small station was built on the line to serve the small settlement and played a key part in the growth of the town. The first thing the railway have asked is to add a siding between the two platform facing tracks to store excursion trains / coaches, as part of this they're looking to widen the viaduct to the land-side of the station along with better access to the goods yard and locomotive depot.
  17. We've got a local artist making sketches of what the town would look like from out at sea, We're hoping to have the pier and lido connected by a promanade sweeping around the bay with the station hotel as a main feature half way along. The old cliff railway is to be restored by Mr Buttlin in return for permission to build his holiday camp on the left hand cliff top The railway want to shuffle their motive power depot, alter the station slightly and modernise their goods yard, possibly building a larger goods facility to handle onwards traffic outside the town and a smaller one in it's present location to serve the town itself. planning, planning, planning, everyone wants their say. Rumour has it Mr Atlee himself may visit to see what we're doing, not sure how true it is, we're only a small costal town, a bit forgotten but loved by locals and visitors alike, especially the chip shop!
  18. Have an opinion about the hobby or profess that [insert manufacturer here] has done a good job of [prototype]
  19. Ze nobs, dey are flashing! We were at the east lancs 40's weekend, myself dressed as an RAF Corpral, my wife as a land girl and our daughter in whatever we had that looked right. We were sat in the full brake where a row of seats has been put in along with a table so that anyone traveling with companions using wheelchairs have somewhere to sit together. We're sat here as Eliza is having a nap (she was 6mths at the time) and Rene walks through, spots Eliza asleep, turns round to Maria (the short one?) who just walked into him as he stopped, finger to lips "shhhhh there is a baby" and tiptoed his way through Maria does the typical cute baby act and tiptoes after him. A bit later and herr Flik comes through and interrogates me and the police officer arrives, says 'good moaning' and also continues through the carriage. All actors put on by the railway. They had a mock battle at one of the stations after which the brake coach was full of American GI and British soldiers and one chap who had served telling tales of what had gone on between bouts of fighting and loving every minute however he did refuse the can of spam and fork that was being passed around by the GI's Btw, new layout planning in my signature
  20. great series of photos, the french layout made me think of Allo Allo, I was looking for cafe Rene! someone should totally do an Allo Allo french layout.
  21. It's over a year since the last town planning meeting, Plans have been drawn up for the expansion of the council offices giving a 14.5 x 6.6 space in the loft giving a 14ft x 3ft space for planning tables, having spoken to a chap called Paul at a town planner's world fair type event called RMWeb Live we're looking at how we can best serve Milliedale-on-Sea's needs now and in the immediate future in conjunction with the railway, we're working together to see the best use of land. We've also been approached by a chap called Billy Butlin who wants to build what he calls a holiday camp on the cliffs overlooking the town, he says it'll bring employment and money into the town, we're considering his suggestion.
  22. To get back on track Put together a layout with that bl**dy flying scotsman clock as a centrepiece!
  23. "If I die first I want my funeral train to leave Waterloo and De Gaulle to be there" - Sir Winston Churchill when asked about arrangements for his state funeral. not sure how true, but given that the only thing they agreed on was to get Hitler I can believe he liked the idea of De Gaulle having to arrive at a station named after Britain's victory over the French. - De Gaulle did indeed attend.
  24. I've read comic books, anything that colour of green has to be radioactive...
