  1. Final Call for your Modelling Era Votes A reminder that your ‘Polling Station’ closes at 1700 today. The Results will appear in the Toplights Mini-Poll on Wednesday 11 August. If you haven’t already voted, here’s a reminder of what to do: There are five outline time periods below; please select as many as apply to you and vote in the usual way (simply: 2, 3 etc). If, for example, you model 1920 to 1935, simply vote 2 as being the closest approximation. 1 1900-1922 2 1923-1938 3 1939-1945 4 1946-1955 5 1956 to early 1960s Brian
  2. Hello Gilbert St Ives branch for me please. In the 1950s, an uncle and aunt owned a hotel near Lelant, the gardens of which backed onto the line - separated only by a rough rear access road. I well remember playing in the games room above the hotel's garage as there was a clear view to the line and the water. Seeing the 45xxs go by was a dream come true for this lad from back-to-back terraced house Tottenham! The hotel has now gone and has been replaced by 'desirable residences'. Brian
  3. Hello again Miss P I forgot to say that that is why we always (or usually) have a 'suggestions box'. Brian
  4. Hello Miss P It is impossible for us to list every GWR Departmental vehicle (and 'incarnation'). We have set a 'maximum load' of 12 items to each Mini-Poll and this one was at the maximum. Hope that helps. Brian
  5. Hello everyone I’m voting for: 6 Breakdown Crane (such as GWR No.205 at Didcot) 7 Staff & Tool Vans 10 Gas Reservoir Tank Wagon 4-wheel – Cordon (Diag.DD4) I’d guess that – like me – many of you will have gone to a show (back in the ‘good old days’!), seen an item for sale, dithered about buying it, then regretted not buying it when you got home! I well recall a visit to the Taunton Show many years ago. A tray on one sales table held maybe a dozen Staff & Tool Vans made to a very high standard – I believe they may well have been the CSP/Hayes versions. I dithered, didn’t buy and have regretted it all these years! Hence, I am voting for them as well as a Breakdown Crane. The Didcot one would be very nice to see in RTR. I have a Shapeways 3D-printed model of the Cordon which runs superbly well. Looks fine from ‘normal layout viewing distance’ but the striations are pronounced closer up, so I am voting for a RTR version. Brian
  6. GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.8: Departmental Stock Hello everyone Welcome to the eighth in our series of GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Polls. I am running them here with my friends, John Lewis, Chris Knowles-Thomas and Ian Taylor on Rob’s behalf. You will find ‘an indication’ of what we are looking at via the suggested example diagrams in parentheses. We simply cannot list every incarnation! The makers are tending to ‘tool up’ to cover as many variants as are commercially viable. For us, the mantra is: If it looks like a Ballast Wagon, it probably is a Ballast Wagon, or a member of the same family. In order to generate some debate – and some ‘learning opportunities’ – please feel free to explain why you have chosen your selections. I copy all ‘Comments Received’ in order of receipt – but with names removed – and post them as a PDF with the Results. Please note that we do not welcome comments that act as an excuse to start up the old chestnut of ‘kits vs RTR’! Here’s what to do… 1. You may vote for any or all of the items listed plus suggestions at 13 (if you so wish). 2. They must be items you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’. 3. Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 7 – with comments and explanations following. My posting which follows should serve as an example. 4. If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations. Ballast & Track Vehicles 1 Ballast Wagon – Starfish/Ling (P14 & BR Diags.1/566 & 1/567) 2 Ballast Wagon – Herring/Mackerel (P22 and BR Diags.1/582 & 1/584 and Diag.1/583) 3 Rail Wagon – Whiting/Minnow (T Diagrams & BR Diag.1/620 & 1/622) 4 Chaired Sleeper Wagon (Diags.T1, T12, T13) 5 Track Relaying Crane – to run with PWM 651-654 Breakdown 6 Breakdown Crane (such as GWR No.205 at Didcot) 7 Staff & Tool Vans Inspection 8 Dynamometer Car W7W 9 Track Testing Car – ‘The Whitewash Coach’ (W139W/DW139) Others 10 Gas Reservoir Tank Wagon 4-wheel – Cordon (Diag.DD4) 11 Loco Coal Wagon 4-wheel 10- & 20-ton 12 Hand Crane 4-wheel 3-ton (as preserved at Great Western Society) 13 Your suggestions of any Departmental Stock not listed. Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box. You have until 17.00 on Saturday 7 August. However, I will stop earlier and advise if votes reach 50. I will present the results during the day on Sunday 8 August. I look forward to your selections and comments! Brian (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Rob’s thread only and neither RMweb nor The 00 Wishlist Poll Team are specifically involved, apart from me, John, Chris and Ian in our ‘personal capacities’.)
  7. Hello everyone Many thanks for your support of the Mini-Polls and I'm happy to say we will run some more for you to follow tomorrow's No.8: Departmental Stock. Funny how things work out, but some of the posts immediately above are, by chance, totally apposite...as you will see in due course! The future Mini-Polls will include such as Autocoaches, Catering, Non-gangwayed Stock and - what will be a star attraction for many - the Toplights. This latter Mini-Poll will be entitled: GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.9: The Case for Toplights. (Scheduled for Wednesday 11 August.) It will follow the example that we had with the TPO stock where the Mini-Poll Team will present you with a case and ask you vote simply in favour or against. As noted, please refrain from debating Toplights until you see our case - thanks. Brian (on behalf of John, Chris & Ian)
  8. Hello Bazza Could you say which others 'creep in'? It will help my results. (I haven't logged your entry yet.) Brian
  9. Hello everyone Not wishing to 'dampen freedom of speech' but - as per our request to hold fire on comments on the TPO Poll until that was running - can we request that you wait until you see what we present to you soon? I'm sticking my neck out here a little, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait! I can then 'capture' all the relevant and important comments in the usual Comments Received manner. Brian (on behalf of John, Chris and Ian)
  10. Hello everyone To assist with some future Rolling Stock Mini-Polls here - if there is support for them to run - it would be helpful to have an idea of your modelling time periods. There are five outline time periods below; please select as many as apply to you and vote in the usual way (simply: 2, 3 etc). If, for example, you model 1920 to 1935, simply vote 2 as being the closest approximation. 1 1900-1922 2 1923-1938 3 1939-1945 4 1946-1955 5 1956 to early 1960s You have until 1700 on Saturday 8 August. You can vote by PM direct to me if you wish. Brian (with Rob's kind approval)
  11. Hello Mike I thought long and hard about the Toplight inclusion, but it would probably draw negative comments if they were excluded from any GWR coaching stock evaluation. Below is how the stock fared in the polls. 2013: 29th 2014: 14th 2015: 17th 2016: 12th 2017: Poll didn't run 2018: 9th 2019: 13th Don't worry Mike...as Kenny Everett used to say: It will all be done in the best possible taste! Brian
  12. Thanks Miss P and others commenting. We wouldn't want to run on a 'general thread' as it would - as noted by Ian - lose the 'quality' aspect of localised comment and debate. Rob and I wanted to just check that we weren't 'losing steam' with the polls. If we drop much below 20 voters in each, it becomes less differentiated. Brian

  15. Thanks Mike I won't actually be buying the Mink so my query was more in response to John's comment of makers using 'generic' underframes and whether Rails have 'done it properly'. Brian
  16. Hello everyone In respect of the underframe discussions above, can anyone say if the new Dapol/Rails Iron Mink has the 'correct' dimensions? Brian
  17. Many thanks John I had never heard of that but it makes sense. The Mogo certainly looks 'wrong' and I could never figure out why. I shall have to go and measure all my vans now! Brian
  18. Many thanks! The difficulty with 'infrastructure' - as we found out when we had such a category in the 'main' Wishlist Polls - was that much is 'location bespoke' and often difficult to pin down. Overhead Line Equipment (OHLE), for example, sounds easy but that could run a whole poll of its own! I'm not sure if I mentioned it here recently or on another thread, but if you drive north up the M1 approaching Watford Gap Services, the WCML runs parallel and you can count six different types in that short stretch alone. Indeed, there were 'standard items' emanating from the old railways - such as what many know as the Airfix Signal Box or the ubiquitous Exmouth Junction Works concrete footbridge. But it is still a vast field that is pretty much impossible to cover comprehensively. Brian
  19. Hello DRoe96 According to Pat Hammond's Ramsay Catalogue, the Mogo had a new chassis in 2001 but still used the 1991 Mainline body. I'm no expert, but the underframe looks fine to me, whereas the body is in need of improvement (and variations). Brian
  20. Hello Neal We could have supplied a 'mini-Guide' along the lines of what we did with the 'main' Wishlist Poll, but felt that - for this audience - it was more productive for you to 'get your thinking caps on'. That seems to be working to good advantage. Brian
  21. Overall Results, Top-to-Bottom, PN 00 Loco Mini-Polls Nos.1-3 Hello everyone As promised, here are the Overall Results, Top-to-Bottom.
