  1. Hello Tony I didn't think for one moment that you were in any way being 'disparaging'. The greater majority of modellers don't/didn't have any interest otherwise we'd have been getting 100,000 voters and not the rough average of 2,500. When the current team started running the polls in 2012 at the request of former MREmag editor and model railway historian, Pat Hammond, we did have a category entitled Other Items. This covered such as level crossings, turntables, signals, trackworkers, overhead line equipment etc etc but soon became apparent that we couldn't cover 'the detail'. Take OHLE...whilst driving up the M1 adjacent to the WCML near Watford Gap Services, I counted six different types of catenary in about three miles! We soon dropped the category. The vast majority of voters who have contacted The 00 Poll Team over the years have been 'jolly good eggs' and have appreciated the work that went into each one. However, I do recall one irate pollster complaining to us that we hadn't listed Wagon A, with buffers B and wheels C, running in livery D. Such is life! Brian (on behalf of The 00 Poll Team)
  2. Final Call for Votes GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.6: Freight Vehicles (excl Vehicle Carriers & ‘Heavy Duty’) Hello everyone A reminder that your 'Polling Station' closes at 17.00 with Results expected tomorrow. If you haven't already voted, here’s what to do… 1 You may vote for any or all of the items listed plus suggestions at 11 & 12 (if you so wish). 2 They must be items you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’. 3 Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 7 – with comments and explanations following. 4 If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations. Brake Van 1 Brake Van – 4-wheel Vacuum Braked (Diag.AA21 of 1939) Bogie Bolster 2 Bogie Bolster A Wagon – Macaw H 20-ton (1927) 3 Bogie Bolster C Wagon – Macaw B 30-ton (1907) Cattle, Grain & Mineral 4 Cattle Wagon – 11ft wheelbase (eg Diag.W1) 5 Grain Wagon – Grano (Diag.V25 of 1935) 6 Mineral Wagon – ‘Felix Pole’ (eg Diag.N32 of 1933) Opens 7 Open Wagons – 16ft, 9ft wheelbase, with/without Sheet Support (Diags. between O3 and O25, 1904-1926) 8 Open Wagons – 17ft 6in, 10ft wheelbase, with/without Sheet Support (Diags. between O31 and O42, 1932-BR days) 9 Open Shock Wagon (Diag.O44 of 1939) Conflat 10 Conflat A Wagon (Diag.H10 of 1944, inc BR Diag.1/061 etc of 1950 on) 11 Containers There are too many to list for you to vote upon. If you want to see any particular Container made, please give details, preferably with a GWR code, such as A1, AF1, BD1 etc. A good point of reference is pp218-219 of A History of GWR Goods Wagons, New Edition Combining Parts 1 & 2 by Atkins, Beard et al. 12 Your suggestions of any wagons not covered in this, earlier or forthcoming Mini-Polls Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box. Brian (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Rob’s thread only and neither RMweb nor The 00 Wishlist Poll Team are specifically involved, apart from me, John, Chris and Ian in our ‘personal capacities’.)
  3. Hello Tony Below is how the B16s have fared in our 00 Wishlist Polls... 2013: All three were Middle Polling 2014-2016: The B16/1 was High Polling; the others Middle 2017: Poll didn't run 2018: As 2014-2016 2019: All were High Polling. The B16/1 was in overall equal position 70 (of about 800 items) Brian (on behalf of the The 00 Poll Team)
  4. Hello Martin I am in the same position as you... I, too, can afford £37.00 out of my allocated model railway budget but would wish to spend that £37.00 on a higher priority item for me. It will still therefore be affordable to many even if some might consider it 'an unrealistic price'. Brian
  5. Results – PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.2: Passenger – Tank Hello everyone Many thanks to the 13 voters who took part. The number of votes to each item is shown in the left hand column and Comments Received are appended on a PDF as usual. Please note that the results reflect the views of those who voted here and may not necessarily reflect those of the wider modelling community. High Polling 9 A5/1 (69800-69829) Middle Polling 8 C12 (67350-67399) 8 N1 (69430-69485) 8 N4/N5 (69225-69247, 69250-69370) Low Polling 5 N2 (69490-69596) Your suggestions of any locos not listed above (They must have had a ‘PN connection’) There were no ‘PN connection’ suggestions. We will be back on Monday with PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.3: Passenger Types – Tender. Brian & Chris (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Gilbert’s thread only and neither The 00 Wishlist Poll Team nor RMweb are specifically involved, apart from Chris and me in a ‘personal capacity’.) 6. Hello Pendennis I know you have your tongue slightly in cheek there, but I thought a small clarification might help... We use the term 'affordable prices' as opposed to 'realistic prices'. It is impossible to be precise but - by 'affordable prices' - we are looking at what has gone before in a similar vein (excluding highly specialised limited editions etc). Brian
  7. Hello everyone All the best to Rails on this announcement! The van was High Polling in The 00 Wishlist Poll 2019 (as it was in 2018 and 2016. The Poll didn't run in 2017). Brian (on behalf of The 00 Poll Team)
  8. Hello everyone The 'Iron Mink' was High Polling in The 00 Wishlist Poll 2019 but Low Polling in the recent Mini-Poll here. Brian
  9. Hello Andy We are actually talking about the GE Section Quad-Arts though. I have always wondered why the GN types were called 'Quads' as they were designed to run as an 8-car set (barring exceptional circumstances and without passengers). I suppose that - to railwaymen - the need to run as two 'correct but different sets' was patently obvious, but it does seem to cause confusion to some modellers. And it isn't helped by the fact the North Norfolk Railway has a GN Quad which has been specially converted to run as 4-coaches! Brian
  10. Hello jazzer I'm afraid I don't have any data on Set Numbers. Perhaps poll colleague, Chris Knowles-Thomas, can help us? Brian
  11. Final Call for Votes - PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.2: Passenger – Tank Hello everyone A reminder that your 'Polling Station' closes at 17.00 today. If you haven't already voted. here’s what to do: 1 You may vote for any or all of the five items listed plus a response to item 6 (if you so wish) 2 They must be items with a ‘PN connection’ and which you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’. 3 Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 5 – with comments and explanations following. 4 If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations. 4-4-2T 1. 4-4-2T GNR C12 (67350-67399) 0-6-2T 2. 0-6-2T GNR N1 (69430-69485) 3. 0-6-2T GNR N2 (69490-69596) 4. 0-6-2T MSLR N4/N5 (69225-69247, 69250-69370) 4-6-2T 5. 4-6-2T GCR/LNER A5/1 (69800-69829) 6 Your suggestions of any locos not listed above (They must have a ‘PN connection’) Please give the company, wheel arrangement and class number (as per the list above). Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box. Brian & Chris (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Gilbert’s thread only and neither The 00 Wishlist Poll Team nor RMweb are specifically involved, apart from Chris and me in a ‘personal capacity’.)
  12. Hello Bloodnok The criterion for this Mini-Poll is as stated in the introduction, viz: Welcome to the second of three planned Mini-Polls concerning locos with a connection to Peterborough North. I can't see that your suggestion meets that. Brian
  13. Hello Neal A query and comment on your post... You note: Firstly 6;7;8 as essential open wagons. Item 6 is the Felix Pole Mineral Wagon. Did you mean 7, 8 and 9 as 'Opens' (and not 6)? I haven't logged the F series Steam Roller Truck as a 'suggestion' as that is coming up next week in: GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.7: Vehicle Carriers & ‘Heavy Duty’. Brian
  14. Just for info - I haven't logged these as 'suggestions' as they will be covered in Mini-Poll No.8 Departmental Stock. Brian
  15. Hello jazzer There is a Brian Pask photo of a GE Section Quad-Art on its way to North Woolwich on page 75 of London's East End Railways, Part 2. The caption says late 1950s. The train loco - N7 No.69731 - is noted in the Modelmaster Allocations books as having been withdrawn in February 1959, so it no doubt pre-dates that. Brian
  16. Hello John Departmental Stock will be dealt with in GWR Mini-Poll No.8 (in about two weeks). I will email you direct to remind you what we have on the list as it is some weeks since we ok'd the draft. Note to all: We are deliberately not listing absolutely everything as that would make each Mini-Poll into more of a 'normal Wishlist Poll' - there are over 400 diagrams of GWR coaches etc for a start! We are trying to keep each Mini-Poll to a max of 12 items, but with the option of leaving suggestions. Brian
  17. Hello everyone Here are my votes: 1 Brake Van – 4-wheel Vacuum Braked 2 Bogie Bolster A Wagon – Macaw H 20-ton 3 Bogie Bolster C Wagon – Macaw B 30-ton 8 Open Wagons – 17ft 6in, 10ft wheelbase, with/without Sheet Support 10 Conflat A Wagon to go with… 11 Containers: I’d go for the BM and FM Meat Containers. Hornby has recently produced its very nice Unfitted Brake Van, so that leaves the Fitted to come. All the current Bogie Bolsters are very old tooling as far as I can tell, so upgraded versions with NEM couplers would be useful. You can never have too many Open Wagons, and the GWR designs could test a model designer’s skills in how many variants could be covered from slip tools etc! Finally, I’d go for a new Conflat and the Meat Containers (BM & FM). Brian
  18. GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.6: Freight Vehicles (excl Vehicle Carriers & ‘Heavy Duty’) Hello everyone Welcome to the sixth in our series of GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Polls. I am running them here with my friends, John Lewis, Chris Knowles-Thomas and Ian Taylor on Rob’s behalf. Stock that ‘carried vehicles’ or were ‘heavy duty’ are in the next Mini-Poll. You will find ‘an indication’ of what we are looking at via the suggested example diagrams in parentheses. We simply cannot list every incarnation! The makers are tending to ‘tool up’ to cover as many variants as are commercially viable. For us, the mantra is: If it looks like Bogie Bolster Wagon, it probably is a Bogie Bolster Wagon, or a member of the same family. In order to generate some debate – and some ‘learning opportunities’ – please feel free to explain why you have chosen your selections. I copy all ‘Comments Received’ in order of receipt – but with names removed – and post them as a PDF with the Results. Please note that we do not welcome comments that act as an excuse to start up the old chestnut of ‘kits vs RTR’! Here’s what to do… 1 You may vote for any or all of the items listed plus suggestions at 11 & 12 (if you so wish). 2 They must be items you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’. 3 Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 7 – with comments and explanations following. My posting which follows should serve as an example. 4 If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations. Brake Van 1 Brake Van – 4-wheel Vacuum Braked (Diag.AA21 of 1939) Bogie Bolster 2 Bogie Bolster A Wagon – Macaw H 20-ton (1927) 3 Bogie Bolster C Wagon – Macaw B 30-ton (1907) Cattle, Grain & Mineral 4 Cattle Wagon – 11ft wheelbase (eg Diag.W1 of 1888) 5 Grain Wagon – Grano (Diag.V25 of 1935) 6 Mineral Wagon – ‘Felix Pole’ (eg Diag.N32 of 1933) Opens 7 Open Wagons – 16ft, 9ft wheelbase, with/without Sheet Support (Diags. between O3 and O25, 1904-1926) 8 Open Wagons – 17ft 6in, 10ft wheelbase, with/without Sheet Support (Diags. between O31 and O42, 1932-BR days) 9 Open Shock Wagon (Diag.O44 of 1939) Conflat 10 Conflat A Wagon (Diag.H10 of 1944, inc BR Diag.1/061 etc of 1950 on) 11 Containers There are too many to list for you to vote upon. 12 Your suggestions of any wagons not covered in this, earlier or forthcoming Mini-Polls. Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box. You have until 17.00 on Saturday 24 July. However, I will stop earlier and advise if votes reach 50. I will present the results during the day on Sunday 25 July. I look forward to your selections and comments! Brian (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Rob’s thread only and neither RMweb nor The 00 Wishlist Poll Team are specifically involved, apart from me, John, Chris and Ian in our ‘personal capacities’.)
  19. Hello Chris We have only listed A5/1 here, so I have logged your A5/2 as 'a suggestion'. The criterion for the suggestion at 6 was that they must have 'a PN connection'. Does the C13 have a connection? Brian
  20. Hello Mike I don't have the book myself, but you could try Highbridge in its Heyday (by Colin Maggs). It's on Amazon, but perhaps try the Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust, Midsomer Norton (01761 411221, open Saturday I think) or the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust, Washford (info@sdrt.org). Buying from them will help their charity work and I'm sure someone will give you a verbal description of the contents (if they have one in stock). Brian
  21. Hello Manna I realise you are slightly 'tongue-in-cheek' with the £100 price tag, but just checking as you say 'a' Quad Art... There was a GE Section Quad Art - ie four coaches. Then there were the GN Section Quad Arts - ie two different 4-car sets intended to run as an 8-car. This is not part of the Mini-Poll but thought I ought to query in case anyone else comments on stock. Brian
  22. Hello everyone A simple Mini-Poll for me this time – just the N2! The current Hornby model derives from the original Airfix design which was then produced by Mainline in 1982. Dapol bought the tooling and this was eventually sold to Hornby in 1996. Although of GNR heritage, the class should have good appeal to a maker due to the geographic spread in BR days – even in Scotland – coupled with a life-span from 1920 to up to 1962, enabling a number of liveries. Looking at the Hugh Longworth Allocations Book for 1960, the 47 remaining N2s were shedded at: 22 King’s Cross 3 Hornsey 4 Hatfield 1 Hitchin 5 New England 5 Grantham 1 Carlisle Canal 3 Parkhead 2 Kipps 1 Dawsholm If you look at 1954 – when the full complement of 107 locos was extant – Stratford, Parkeston and Colchester were on the list. Icing on any new loco cake would be some new-tooled BR Mk1 Short Underframe Non-gangwayed stock! Brian
  23. PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.2: Passenger – Tank Hello everyone Welcome to the second of three planned Mini-Polls concerning locos with a connection to Peterborough North. The title is Passenger - Tank, but we appreciate that some were used on freight or parcels etc. It is simply to differentiate from the other two Mini-Polls (Freight Types and Passenger – Tender). I am running the Mini-Polls on behalf of Gilbert, but with the kind assistance of Chris Knowles-Thomas. It is often impossible to be ‘deadly precise’ with a 1-line descriptor as many classes were altered over the years. We take the view that ‘if it looks like an N2, it probably is an N2’. Recent past experience is showing that makers are ‘tooling up’ to make as many variants as they can for any new model. You can submit your wishes here, on the thread, as usual, or PM me direct if you prefer the ‘secret ballot’ method. If you vote on the thread, please feel free to explain why you have chosen your selection – hopefully, that will promote some interesting debates – but please do not take it as an excuse to start up the old chestnut of ‘kits vs RTR’! 4-4-2T 1. 4-4-2T GNR C12 (67350-67399) 0-6-2T 2. 0-6-2T GNR N1 (69430-69485) 3. 0-6-2T GNR N2 (69490-69596) 4. 0-6-2T MSLR N4/N5 (69225-69247, 69250-69370) 4-6-2T 5. 4-6-2T GCR/LNER A5/1 (69800-69829) 6. Your suggestions of any locos not listed above - but they must have a ‘PN connection’ Please give the company, wheel arrangement and class number (as per the list above). Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box. We are back on ‘normal schedule’ now, so you have until 17.00 on Thursday 22 July to vote. However, I will stop earlier and advise if votes reach 50. I will present the results during the day on Friday 23 July. We look forward to your selections and comments! Brian & Chris (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Gilbert’s thread only and neither The 00 Wishlist Poll Team nor RMweb are specifically involved, apart from Chris and me in a ‘personal capacity’.)
