  1. Hello again Andy I don't usually add data to my Mini-Poll lists, preferring voters to undertake their own research into items they are unaware of. But - just for you - details from The Guide to The 00 Wishlist Poll 2019. Brian BR Track Recorder 4-wheel – Matisa Neptune Built between 1957 and 1967, BR operated 13 of these small self-propelled track recording vehicles to measure track geometry. They were withdrawn around 1987 as modern replacements arrived. Link http://www.hondawanderer.com/DR50006_Chinley_1984.htm
  2. Thanks Andy I have just looked at one of the David Larkin books and it does seem that most Catfish were on the LMR - which I wasn't aware of. However, if had a run a Departmental Mini-Poll without a single Ballast Wagon per se, I would have drawn adverse comment, I'm sure. It is partly for that reason - and that the list had reached 'maximum permitted load' - that I asked for 'suggestions' at Item 11. I was going to list the Trout, but didn't as it is already made. Agreed that it now seems to be a rare item! Brian
  3. Hello Phil The six TPO vehicles in the Penzance Postal (10.10pm) were all 'offset gangways'. Turn one, turn the lot. Easier to leave 'as is'. Brian
  4. Thanks Mike I have those books and have just enjoyed going through them looking at the photos. In 'Echoes', the photo dated 28 August 1957 shows the northbound single van train near Totnes. The author notes the TPO lineside apparatus on the Up side that the train is just passing - so we now know at least one location. My guess is that - had a bag been on the apparatus for collection - he would have noted that in the caption (but that's just me speculating). I was also interested to see the car train photo in 'Reflections', dated 10 January 1959. You don't see many of those! (You will be able to vote for Mogo Vans in a forthcoming Mini-Poll.) Brian
  5. Hello everyone I am voting for four items in this Mini-Poll: * Ballast Plough Brake Van – the LNER van had the ploughs ‘inside’ the wheelbase; * Dolphin and Sturgeon – because they are ‘distinctive’, useful and can be run loaded or empty; * Breakdown Crane – on the basis that it was one of this type that was allocated to New England (according to the Peter Tatlow wagons book). Does anyone know how far south – if ever – the crane might have ventured? Not LNER per se, but I guess Mr Duck will be with me in putting the SR Walrus Ballast Wagon as an item I would like to see made! Does anyone know if they got to Peterborough? Or did ballast for the area come from elsewhere? Brian
  6. 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.8: Departmental Stock Hello everyone Welcome to the final Mini-Poll concerning rolling stock that has at least some connection with Peterborough North. I am running the Mini-Polls on behalf of Gilbert. We will move to the first of three PN Loco Mini-Polls on Sunday – one day earlier than normal timetable – details later. You will find ‘an indication’ of what we are looking at via the suggested example diagrams in parentheses as it is often impossible to be ‘deadly precise’ with a 1-line descriptor. We take the view that ‘if it looks like a Ballast Wagon, it probably is a Ballast Wagon or a member of the same family’. Recent past experience is showing that makers are ‘tooling up’ to make as many variants as they can for any new model. You can submit your wishes here, on the thread, as usual, or PM me direct if you prefer the ‘secret ballot’ method. If you vote on the thread, please feel free to explain why you have chosen your selection – hopefully, that will promote some interesting debates – but please do not take it as an excuse to start up the old chestnut of ‘kits vs RTR’! Here’s what to do… 1. You may vote for any or all of the 10 items listed plus a response to item 11 (if you so wish) 2. They must be items you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’. 3. Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 7, 9, 10 – with comments and explanations following. 4. If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations. Ballast 1 Ballast Plough Brake Van – LNER (1926) 2 Ballast/Rail/Sleeper Wagon – LNER/BR Dolphin (Diag.99, BR Diag.1/639) 3 Ballast/Rail/Sleeper Wagon – BR Sturgeon (Diag.1/638 etc) 4 Ballast Wagon 4-wheel – BR Catfish (Diag.1/586) Crane 5 Breakdown Crane – LNER – Cowans Sheldon 45-ton (1940) Inspection 6 Chief Engineer’s Saloon – LNER DE900580 (1936) 7 Dynamometer Car BR – DE320041, later DB999500 (1951) 8 Track Recorder – BR Matisa Neptune 4-wheel Loco Coal 9 Loco Coal Wagon – LNER 4-wheel 21-ton – Wood (Diag.207) 10 Loco Coal Wagon – LNER 4-wheel 21-ton – Steel (Built 1935 & 1947) 11 Other Departmental Stock you would like to see made. Please give an indication as succinctly as possible of anything not listed above that you would like to see made. Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box. You have until 17.00 on Thursday 8 July. However, I will stop earlier and advise if votes reach 50. I will present the results during the day on Friday 9 July. I look forward to your selections and comments! Brian (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Gilbert’s thread only and neither The 00 Wishlist Poll Team nor RMweb are specifically involved, apart from me in my ‘personal capacity’.)
  7. Hello everyone Reflecting on Mike's contribution (currently two posts up), the Carriage Working books are useful to have but for 'modelling accuracy' it is always good to go from actual photos or accounts of staff who were there. I can't think where the exact details are in my files for the moment, but I know of an occasion on the S&D when a station down the line - maybe Sturminster Newton - had a loaded Cattle Wagon booked out north at 'freight rate'. However, for reasons of expediency or maybe health of the cattle, the wagon was hooked on the back of an Up passenger to Bath (Green Park). Being on the rear on arrival, it was a simple enough matter to unhook and shunt to the yard where it joined a suitable northbound freight. You won't find Maunsell 3-set + Cattle Wagon in the S&D carriage workings! Brian
  8. Hello Mike You and I have spoken before about certain books. It might be worth mentioning here - in very broad terms - that 'all that glisters isn't gold' and the old adage of 'buyer beware' still applies. I have a book which I will call simply: Passenger Trains on Line A in Year B. From the 'real title', prospective purchasers would have been right to think that - as it was a popular line at a popular time - the photos would 'illustrate the text'. Of 23 photos, just one is of Year B - but that is a Relief that can't be checked against the text. Two other photos are of freight trains - arguably unwarranted in a passenger train book. On the plus side, the text is high up the ratings of 'good' - although trying to comprehend what is already 'complicated matter ' through sentences comprising sometimes well over 100 words is a pain. (Most editorial styles will aim for about 20-40 words or so.) Brian
  9. Hello Phil Either the book you mention is wrong or - maybe - you aren't reading the CWP correctly. My extract below is from Summer 1956. Notice that the TPO only goes Plymouth-Bristol. There are no other TPOs on that train (under normal circumstances). When the train gets to Pontypool Road, then one of Sorting Vans 801, 802 or 803 are attached, working Cardiff-Liverpool. Hope that helps. Brian
  10. Hello Mike Mike Arlett's caption to the upper photo on that same page says that Norman Lockett took both photos on Wednesday 13 April 1938, about a mile east of Cornwood on the climb to Ivybridge. I would have sworn it was ECS - but we live and learn, such is (partly) the value of running these Mini-Polls! Brian
  11. Hello Rich I have found your photo...and you are right, it is 'The North Mail'! It is on page 50 of Great Western Steam, 1934-1949, by Mike Arlett & David Lockett. I wouldn't normally have a GWR per se book in my library but I gave Mike some help with the book and that is how I came to have the good fortune of getting John Lewis onto the 00 Wishlist Poll Team! (Mike and I are S&D fans!) John had a hand in the caption which I reproduce below. (Please respect the copyright of the information.) I have also added the working from the 1935/1936 CWP - closest I can get to the photo, which is 1938. Brian
  12. Results – GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.3: TPO Stock Many thanks to the 18 voters who took part. The number of votes to each item is shown in the left hand column and Comments Received are appended on a PDF as usual. Please note that the results reflect the views of those who voted here and may not necessarily reflect those of the wider modelling community. The results are pretty clear! High Polling 16 L22 Middle Polling 8 L23 Low Polling 3 L25 2 L21 1 L13 1 L18 1 L24 1 L26 The Diag.K17 Van was also mentioned twice. Tune in on Wednesday 7 July for: GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.4: Selected NPCCS & Freight. This will cover such as Banana, Fruit, Fish, Milk, Meat and Special Cattle Vans and will be a prelude to the following three Mini-Polls covering freight vehicles per se. Brian (also on behalf of John, Chris & Ian) GWR Mini-Poll No.3 TPO Comments Received.pdf
  13. Hello Rich This is what we said in the intro to the TPO Mini-Poll: Although in his book, Great Western Coaches from 1890, Michael Harris indicates that L22 No.798 was in this train, we can find no evidence of that in the Carriage Working books. Looking back at the 1946-1947 CWP clip above, I thought that - possibly - the LM TPOs were there to substitute for Diag.L23 Nos.812-814 which Harris notes as having delivery apparatus fitted in November 1946. Mike's amendments date to March 1947, so perhaps the formation changes relate to this? Brian
  14. Hello Fatadder What working does your photo show? It looks rather more like Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) to me. Brian
  15. Hello Fatadder Sorry about the post in error above! Well...look what I have just found as a result of looking for 1947 for you! I must have somehow missed it when looking originally! This is the 10.10pm Down Postal Paddington-Penzance, 1946-1947. Look at the formation! Brian
  16. Hello Mike As part of the research for this Mini-Poll, I went through all the Carriage Working Programmes that are kindly provided by friend and (main) Poll Team colleague, Robert Carroll, but I don't recall seeing any TPO marked 'light'. That's not to say that I 'disagree' with you, though! As we well know, not everything was in the CWP and not everything followed the CWP to the letter - amendments often being made before the books ever got on a printing press. While writing, I thought readers might like to see the clip below from 1943 - the 4.00pm is a very short train! Please respect the copyright as Robert's. Brian
  17. Hello Nick Good to hear from you. Votes duly noted. You say that the L23 and L13 suit your requirements. Is that simply a matter of preference or was there a mail train with just those two in the formation? Speaking personally (and not on behalf of my Mini-Poll colleagues) I wouldn't want to see the TPO apparatus operational as I feel it would add much cost to any project. The recent Bachmann Breakdown Crane 'works' but I wonder on the value of that. But, there again, does the fact that it 'works' actually sell the product to many who wouldn't buy a non-working one? I recently posed the question about whether the L22 in the 3.45pm from Plymouth (Noon train from Penzance) actually picked up on route, but there has been no reply. Looking at my Public Timetable, it ambled up to Bristol, not arriving until 7.00pm. Even so, would that not have made it too early for most pillar box collections and pre-sorting into bags? And, if that is so, why wasn't a 'simple' Stowage Van used? This is partly what I like about our Mini-Polls; they answer a question but open up two more... and so on! Brian
  18. Final Call for Votes - GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.3: TPO Stock Hello everyone Your 'Polling Station' closes at 1700 today with Results expected tomorrow. If you haven't already voted, all you need to do is to respond to either 1 or 2 below: 1. I want to vote for just the Diag.L22. (Simply state L22 on your posting) or 2. I want to vote for the following L Diagram Nos: (Such as L4, L20, L21 etc including L22 if you didn’t pick Option 1 above). Brian (Note: These are ‘informal Polls for fun’ on Rob’s thread only and neither RMweb nor The 00 Wishlist Poll Team are specifically involved, apart from me, John, Chris and Ian in our ‘personal capacities’.)
  19. Note about the TPO Mini-Poll Hello everyone Back on page 1647, we said we would run a TPO Mini-Poll if we got at least 15 'likes' for the idea, which would make it worthwhile for the effort. There were 17 'likes' and 1 'agree' - 18 total. We currently have 14 entries...but only six of the 18 above have voted. If 'the missing 12' care to vote, it will give us a more rounded result. Polling closes at 1700 tomorrow, Saturday 3 July. Brian
  20. Hello Phil No problem at all. This thread is entitled as being 'filled with frivolity' so the different sizes were indeed good fun and your contributions are always light hearted and interesting (to say the least!) as well as often informative. We all need a little bit of fun here and there! My old teacher was a stickler for 'correctness' but that was back in the mid-60s and we had to work to what was known as The Style of the House. Lots of typographical conventions have gone out of the window since then with the advent of word processing and now keyboard access for all. Not 'right or wrong' - just different. Keep it coming, Phil! There will some items in future Mini-Polls that can be used on the SR - but I do have to keep to predominantly GWR as we are running them on Rob's behalf. While writing, are you aware of the report in Railway Observer December 1960 concerning diversions at Exeter? Brian

They will be: * PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.1: Freight, Tank & Tender * PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.2: Passenger Tank * PN 00 Loco Mini-Poll No.3: Passenger Tender Brian Mini-Poll No.7 Bogie Comments Received.pdf
