  1. The Italian one reminds me of some of these things: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_coaster
  2. There are loads of these sound mirrors along the South Coast in the Dungeness to Hythe area. Most of them date from slightly later - they obviously became redundant when RADAR was installed in the late 1930s.
  3. I thought that was because there were 360 days in the year (at least if you were in Egypt about 3000 years ago before they had more accurate ways of determining the length of the year).
  4. Don't some Eastern cultures use a base-12 counting system rather than base-10? (12 coming from a single hand with 4 fingers with 3 segments each).
  5. I noticed at Warley last week that further production of that kit was 'on hold'.
  6. Having looked at their website, I'm quite impressed with the attitude of 'we're doing this one model next year, here's the CAD design work we've done so far'. Hopefully a move away from the current trend of certain manufacturers announcing half a dozen new locomotives every year, to be added to the already vast backlog of stuff they've announced but not released.
  7. It was 120 that ran in LSWR livery in BR days..
  8. I got two from a late night visit to the West Bridgford ASDA in Nottingham. Mine aren't assembled very well, but I'm planning on hacking them apart anyway. According to Bradley's 'Drummond Greyhounds of the LSWR' 117 was Superheated in 1927, so there's no way it would have carried LSWR livery in the condition modelled.
  9. I wonder if the Finecast T9 etched chassis will fit?
  10. Wouldn't William Topaz McGonagall be a better choice, given the slightly dodgy poetry?
  11. I also remember that a fair number of the Liverpool-Norwich services ran via Loughborough during the early/mid-1990s. Over the years this slowly changed to today's situation where only the first one or two in the morning do this, and the rest go via Grantham and the ECML.
  12. I'd forgotten how rubbish the MML service was until privatisation and the arrival of the 170s and a regular timetable pattern.
  13. If you were really evil, you could set up the website to display subtly different versions of the picture to different users............. (Which I doubt in this case, as this website so far looks like it was designed in 1996)
  14. Hopefully they'll scan one of the preserved ones, and avoid the old problem of ending up with features of both in your drawing/model.
  15. On the subject of the SIlk Mill, I wonder if they still have the exhibit on Derby Research? Last time I went about 5-6 years back it still had the display on 'upcoming projects', including the CATE timetable inquiry computer system. I remember that being decommissioned in 1999 rather than spend the money making it Y2K compliant!
  16. It's been a while since I went to the Industrial museum (which I think has reopened after a few years of being mothballed) but I'm pretty certain that the layout there was a new one (possibly still under construction).
  17. Shame it's the Watercart tender and not the 6 wheeled one. Still, I'm wondering what it can be hacked in to. An L12 would be a possibility. I've always fancied a double single as well......
  18. Yikes! From the title I was expecting a SER 0-4-4T! Still looks rather good though.
  19. On my R1, which is pretty similar to the H (I think they share castings) I left the roof off for painting and fitting the crew, and then glued it on before the final coat of varnish. You just have to make sure that it's a good fit before you start painting.
  20. Is he thinking that they could shave a lot of time off the journey by using EMUs with their much better acceleration than loco hauled stock?
  21. I've seen flats here in Nottingham close to the station advertised as ideal for commuting to London, so it seems to be a standard ploy regardless of the state of the train service and how long it takes.
  22. I see it's been weathered to look like the real thing after its spell shunting in a China clay quarry.....
  23. Has anyone tried fitting 21mm gauge wheels to their Jinty to turn it in to one of NCC ones.........?
  24. I guess the actual railings are old loco boiler tubes. As for Havenhouse, it has two trains a day which probably explains that after years of using the Nottingham - Grantham services I don't recall ever being on a train that was going to stop there.
  25. I'm always impressed by Worsley's Works honesty regarding their kits:
