Nice model, but it reminds me that I've still not finished my own Finecast I3.....
-
My brain wasn't working last night when I typed this up - the LSWR vehicle is a Horsebox and not a special cattle wagon. Doh! Such things did exist - with a compartment for an attendant in the same style as horsebox and were used to transport prize bulls and such like.
I often wondered what the poor groom had to do when they needed to answer the call of nature, as toilets in Horseboxes didn't appear until the 1930s....

I found that the Vallejo yellow didn't need thinning and I used it straight out of the bottle. When I did the lining on my (still not finished) Craftsman T1 loco in SR livery, the white needed thinning down with a spot of water.
It dries quite fast, so I had to unblock the tip of the pen if it hadn't been used for a few minutes. Other than that I found it really straightforward to use.
Cleaning up is easy, as the acrylic paint doesn't stick to the metal of the ruling pen. It's well worth a try.

I like the prototype photo - I think that might be one of the tramways around Newhaven in LBSC or early Southern days (judging by the wagon liveries). I'm surprised that they let an E2 loose on that lightweight track.
I'll be interested to see how this turns out - I fancy another E2, but I'd rather not go down the route of modifying another Hornby one.

It's a nice looking loco - I'm impressed that 3 of them still survive, which is not a bad survival rate.

Forgive my ignorance of Australian steam, but that 4-4-2T a Beyer-Peacock? It looks like an enlarged version of the 4-4-0Ts they built for the Metropolitan and various other UK railways.
-
The rebuilt T14s are a strange looking engine - I've always thought the originals looked better, even if they were mechanically inferior.
-
It seems a strange decision to me. Why extend a line a few hundred yards, but then have to use two locos and therefore double the fuel on services. Surely that does not make financial sense? Maybe I was just feeling sore as this meant my train was only steam hauled one way.
I also don't entirely understand the logic behind their extension to the mainline station. They make no attempt to connect with the EMT services, which isn't good on a Sunday when EMT only run every 2 hours.
-
That must have been fun to line out! The A12s (and O4 class) are lovely looking locomotives.
-
I'm tempted by 11001 - one day I'll do it.
To cut a long story short, I've spent a bit too much time on building kits of obscure Southern classes, and not enough on detailing all of the more mainstream RTR models I've got in the cupboard. The 04 (and 03) are an attempt to rectify this. I guess it's part fo the problem of not having a layout at the moment.

Yes, it's going to have a good scrub and rub down before I paint it to remove any lumps of solder, glue and gunge. My soldering isn't the neatest.
-
I wasn't very impressed with some of the earlier Ayjay models EMUs, but this looks rather good. The separate jumper cables do help a lot.
-
The chassis is the wrong way round - I should have posted photos of the chassis and loco oriented the say way round. I've now managed to shoehorn a Mashima motor and Branchlines multibox in to the space.

Hi Nick,
I was very impressed with your 1P - I had a good read of your blog entries before starting on the T1.
If I've got my sums right, the Mashima motor I'm using wont project in to the cab, but the flywheel will by a couple of milimetres. Hopefully this can be hidden by the backhead (which will need to be made from scratch, like the rest of the cab interior)..
That just leaves the frame cutouts to fill - I've soldered some strip in to place which hopefully hides them once the body is in place.
If it doesn't work, them I've still go the option of replacing the chassis with soemthing a bit better.

The R1 is definitely on my list to do - I've had the wheels in my box of unstarted project for about 10 years. I also bought a Chivers LBSC D3 at the same time as the J, so that will appear eventually.
-
Thanks - I'd not seen that film before. That was (3)1595 - the only J class to retain piston tail rods to the end.
-
The best thing to do with the old Airfix/Dapol wagon kits is to build them! With a bit of detailing, and decent wheels and buffers the end result is pretty good.
-
I'm planning on doing some decent photos when it's finished in a week or so. So watch this space....
-
Not in the end - I managed to get the original ones from the kit to stop binding.
-
Thanks - I'll give that go.
-
I've forgotten the exact ratio of the gearbox - it's something in the region of 38:1 or 40:1. The chassis does indeed come with etched holes for plunger pickups (but none are supplied). Having tried these before and found them a little on the fiddly side, I'll go with the old fashioned approach of wiper pickups.
I've not made any more progress since Saturday, but hopefully I should get a decent amount of work done tonight.

I was wondering how to motorise the A1 48DS I've got stored away (without using a Spud that does 0-60 in 0.5 seconds). <div><br></div><div>Now I think have the answer..... </div>

Yes, that's going to be fun.... The droplights should be easy enough as they have etched retainers for the glazing. I suspect it will be one of those tasks done in 10 minute chunks over the course of several weeks.<div><br></div><div>Oddly the first class toilet has a droplight and the third class toilet a fixed window. </div>

I remember peering inside the one in Covent Garden and thinking that the insides were mostly taken up with resistance banks. I wonder if the round items in the photo are the traction motor blowers?
