Class 800 - Updates
JJGraphics replied to Indomitable026's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
Whilst I don't disagree in general with what you say, the rough-riding of the IEPs I have travelled on does not seem to be consistent with any particular location, they just seem to choose to bounce and bang about almost anywhere. The unpleasant internal noise and floor vibration seems to be fairly consistent across most of the units when on diesel although the vibration transmitted through the floor and seats does seem a lot worse in some than others and is particularly annoying in many of the driving cars which of course don't have engines under the floor. Occasionally when I sign-in, I get an error message, but the sign-in actually works normally and allows me to use the site as expected. This is the error message: Screenshot 2019-03-01 at 09.19.38.pdf

I've had several rough rides on 800s and it seems to be getting worse. 2 x 5 Reading to Paddington yesterday and was very pleased to get off at Paddington. -

A question of "taste" seeking opinion on TTS
JJGraphics replied to george stein's topic in DCC Sound
In my view TTS decoders are "OK" if you consider the diesel sounds or just want steam locos to make a noise and can cope with the occasional strange behaviour which has been discussed at length on these forums. However they don't sound great when compared with the quality of the steam sound effects achievable on mainstream decoders supplied by the likes of Locoman, Wheeltappers and others, and it is visually irritating as you cannot synchronise the chuffs with the wheel rotation. In the end it is of course down to your choice but if you have a small stud of steam locomotives which you plan to equip with sound, I would suggest that you will be more satisfied if you opt for the best quality decoders one at a time as you can afford them. You could buy some cheap basic decoders to allow you to run your stud on DCC until you can afford the best sound decoders. As Charlie said "20 x OK ones or 8 Good ones". John -
I have just shown this comment to a friend who is a qualified electrician and he says that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES would he consider working on a domestic installation without turning off the main isolator and ensuring that it cannot be turned on again by the householder whilst he is working. John
-
DON'T ever just switch off individual trips or pull fuses if you attempt replacing the faceplate or anything else in the property yourself. ALWAYS turn off the main isolator. AND if the property is older, make sure there are no other sources of power supply. If you have the slightest doubt, get a professional electrician in. John

Unwanted Activity Streams
JJGraphics replied to JJGraphics's topic in Forum Rules, Notices, Faults & Help
Excellent . . . thank you! -
We should all be mindful of the vast amount of work that Andy has done to get RMWeb back up and running and we should all clearly understand that the site is very much a "work in progress" due to the nature of the software used to run something like this. In it's "out of the box" form, software of this nature will never do exactly what either the site administrators or the users want. It will take a great deal of time and effort to refine it to the point that the old RMWeb had reached. Given time, I am sure that Andy will refine and change things, but it will take time and not everything will be possible. I have a suggestion: Could we have a "Wish List" for suggestions for features which would be just "post-only" with the ability for members to only "Agree" or "Like" a suggestion and for just a Mod to reply so that any suggestions made do not descend into a raging argument? John

How do we remove unwanted/duplicated Activity Streams?

Absolutely! NEVER do it, no exceptions. Keep your passwords to yourself! John

Awesome Controller Idea, Anyone Tried This?

Simple answer: don't get a smart meter; you don't have to, and they are a PITA. John -

That would have taken some planning . . . a skill which DaFT seem to be lacking . . . John -
No, but some have about as much intelligence as a potato.

I really agree with that view. I employ technology here at home where it can be helpful and make life easier for both of us, but don't see the need for things like "smart" kettles which you turn on with your phone . . . what's wrong with walking out into the kitchen and switching it on (and getting a little exercise whilst doing so)? I feel the same way about layout automation. No doubt for some it re-creates the experience of train watching in the real world, but I really enjoy driving my trains and doing a bit of shunting. Layout automation would take that pleasure away from me as I would just become a spectator . . . John -
Don't worry about this . . . just tell your friend to delete them. It is most likely that your address has been harvested from someone's PC or during one of the major data breaches that have happened to Yahoo in the past. As with the telephone numbers used in scam calls, it is possible to spoof an e-mail address if you know how. If you are interested and know someone who is capable, it is usually possible to determine the actual address used to send the e-mail which will often be a strange one with .ru or .ro or else something completely bizarre at the end! I would personally never use any of the mail services from Yahoo, GMail, Hotmail, etc., as I have seen the issues that people have with them far too often. John

I don't know what he paid for but what he got was poor service (not just when his connection was cut) and a mountain of grief which has now gone away. His computer services are costing him less than the "cloud" arrangements did, even though his wage costs have increased considerably. John

Its all very well until someone puts the shovel of an excavator through a fibre optic cable and you have no connectivity for 14 hours as my friend's business found to it's cost. John

That's good to know! John

The "Cloud" . . . oh, dear! A year or so back a business-owner friend of mine who runs quite a sizeable and successful engineering business was talked into moving a lot of his services to the "Cloud" by some external IT "experts" who managed to convince him that it would save him money. His company spent a considerable sum of money on doing this and renting "cloud" storage and services, but had endless problems of one sort or another including downtime due to lost connectivity to services because of a DDoS attack, server issues and several other incidents including a near-disaster due to almost losing some critical financial data which by good fortune someone in the company had the foresight to store on a local backup. His company has now employed a well-qualified specialist and has spent another not inconsiderable sum of money moving the whole lot back to in-house servers and are breathing easy again . . . they have also dumped all their "software as a service" setup and moved back to direct licensing. A very hard and expensive lesson. John
