  1. When I was little my dad used to take my brother and me to see the trains at New Basford Station, wonderful times. After the station closed in 1964 we went to Victoria instead, I think all the steam and smoke ignited my interest in railways. North of New Basford there was a road bridge, Perry Road, where you could see the GC carriage sheds and watch trains emerging from Sherwood Rise tunnel and slowly climb the gradient towards Bagthorpe Junction. I first learned about signalling there, to a 4 year old it was easy, the arm went up, a train is coming!
  2. Yes, there were 2 sets of sidings, on the Up side leaving New Basford there was the GC carriage shed and sidings, after passing Bagthorpe Junction towards Derby there was the GN carriage sidings.
  3. The seats are not brilliant in the Dutch ones either. They are definitely a commuter train rather than Inter-City!
  4. Why are the Flirts having so many problems? When I've travelled on these trains in The Netherlands they just seem to be so reliable.
  5. He's fine, just got to avoid Dick Dastardly and the Vulture Squadron now.......
  6. Sad memories of these locos, the very last train I saw on the GC at New Basford before closure was a Stanton Ironworks double headed by 31s and the last train I saw on the Boston-Spalding line was 2 of them running light. Funny how childhood memories can stick!
  7. Sorry for the slow response, I only just found this. Pairs of class 20s and class 31s were used on trains to Stanton Ironworks east of Derby until 1968 when the line closed. The very last train was a DMU special from Burton (?) that covered the GN lines around Derby and Nottingham on 4th May 1968.
  8. In the final year Brush Type 4s took over (class 47), can't remember seeing one of those.
  9. I remember the York-Bournmouth at Nottingham Victoria, my dad used to take us to see it. But the only other trains I remember were very dirty steamers!
  10. I've heard it said that brand new Hymeks were delivered to the Western Region via the GC mainline in the early 1960s. I've never seen a picture of one, is it true? I think they were built in the Manchester area so it could be, in which case presumably they went via Woodhead as well.
  11. Really? Well at least it wouldn't involve the demolition of peoples homes and destruction of nature. Oh and before anyone tries to accuse me of "nimbyism" I do not own an affected property.
  12. I'm not talking about so called HS3. Just improving existing lines by putting up overhead wires, easing curves, new trains, silly things like improving the quality of the service.
  13. In this mornings Mail on line I read that HS2 is now being probed by the Serious Fraud Office, well well, I always suspected it was just a "gravy train" for the rich and powerful. Improving the links between Northern cities like Leeds and Manchester etc would be a much better thing to do.
  14. And what is wrong with using the M1 route? Remove the 2 outside lanes and you have room. Not perfect but better than the current proposals, cheaper too.
  15. You call my views "rubbish", well I call you rude! I still believe with all my heart that HS2 is a total waste of money, typical white elephant!
  16. Well I did put "the cat among the pidgeons" didn't I. I still say it isn't needed, not wanted and a colossal waste of money! Has it occured to anyone that with the advance of technology in 20 years time face to face business meetings will be a thing of the past? We already have Skype. Office accommodation in London is hideously expensive, far more people will work from home. I call it "Camerons Folly". If a high speed railway is so necessary put it in the middle of the M1 and remove the outside lane, after all we won't want cars when we can use a fancy train!
  17. I sincerely hope it is cancelled asap. Spend the money on hospitals, schools and defence. If HS2 is really needed hand the whole thing over to the private sector, let them do it just like the Victorians did with the original network.
  18. The design did evolve through the 60s and 70s, it was almost unique to Nottingham, I remember these buses from my childhood like it was only yesterday.
  19. In the first picture we can see a couple of Nottingham City Transport Atlanteans with their typical "Nottingham look", a design just as classic as that of the trains!
  20. Really need to go to Specsavers! It's ok, no offence taken, Andrea x Thanks for all the opinions guys, appreciated.
  21. Sorry if I'm showing igmorance but I'm new to this. I've just bought an electrofrog double slip to go in the carriage sidings on my Dutch layout. I'm surrounding it with insulated joiners and using DCC. Do I need to use switches to change the frog polarity or can I use the point baldes to conduct current and change the polarity of the frogs? Bit confused!!
