  1. The 'big one' as I understand it has a huge crater i.e 100s of miles and 'goes' every 600 000 years. Geologists have noted movement in the form of 'slight tilting' so theoretically it could go at any time now but there would probably be a warning.
  2. The opening picture looks good but it did not run on my computer - probably band width problem but of course in these days mine is steam powered - oops they are not running either at present.
  3. Particularly liked the Ravel Bolero performance.
  4. Apologies John - slightly modified couple of words on quoting - but I too have been that lucky with the one exception. Can totally understand why this is not too often the case and have known a number of friends who have stayed in the job ' they pay me' so that they could support their families. On the 'gill' the 1/3 pint - never had any problems and didn't drink tea until 16. 'Frog' spawn etc. horrible stuff.and couldn't eat it. One day in nursery , last to 'finish' because I could not eat it before getting a stoke of luck because the observer left (in retrospect probably to go to the 'toilet') so quickly tipped the 'frog-spawn out through the gap in the damaged window and ran out ... That has just triggered the memory of Great Ormond Street Hospital - walking to the end of the dusty wooden floor above ground level where there were bits of wood and wire - there was no wall and a drop down into the street. In the street going back to the 'tube' someone playing one of those barrel organs ... other memories of people walking along war damaged streets singing with cap in hand.
  5. Early retirement after 35 years in the NHS but not by choice - the cuts. Awkward for a while but then went into teaching hoping for primary but told that I was too old and that they would not get enough years of teaching out of me to justify primary ... would I like secondary ... so ended up with using PGCE in FE for the next 12 years plus, in teaching hours 14.5 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cuts meant my courses were removed so retired again (the overwhelming -unnecessary to teaching - paperwork making it less of a wrench). As an over 30 year volunteer with RC EFA (as of today the RC no longer provide Event FA cover) so most current active EFA first aiders etc. have transferred to SJA. Managed to obtain a two-year funded training post with RC that became 10 working with the GRT and the homeless that were very rewarding years, leading to a number of saved lives, until finally retiring at 74 so 20 plus teaching years given. Early years housing memories. In hindsight bearing in mind the parent health situation we did quite well in housing but memories of other places visited - water running from an outside sink across floor to a drain the most poignant and not the result of war damage. Grandparents home - the front room or whatever they called it was never used and the house even then seemed small for such a large family that had once resided. Grandad was never seen doing anything but sit by the range smoking his pipe and I never ever remembered him speaking. My brother and I feared him and did not like him and later information provided interesting ... enough said. SWMBO says that I am spending too much time on here ... since I read everything she is probably right so perhaps I had had better see what is in the 'Engine Shed' as it was labelled and stuck by a friend.
  6. I like the original rather than the rebuild variety - they were the ones we spotted at Wimbledon out of Waterloo.
  7. Remember it ... how's the practice going ... has Dee banished you back to the shed yet?
  8. Boris positive to Covid 19!
  9. Eminently better than working in one of those huge great office spaces and when part-time and in the office having to use that disastrous concept of 'hot desk'. Fortunately the last work I did was peripatetic and very enjoyable and rewarding (Bob Bishop probably has some of the same rewarding experiences) but the nemesis quite often was parking. I notice that a number of my former RC colleagues have moved across to SJA following the recent change in RC priorities.
  10. Will you be unpacking or is the move still on? ... if not then you will become mightily frustrated. Hope all going well. We have someone getting (we hope) our victual needs as we are in residence once more.
  11. John's music taste is excellent and the latest - the Marine Band's rendering of Evening was very moving.
  12. Double name also used for relatives in my generation. In grandparents the deceased infants name was given to the second etc same sex child and also given a middle name of the Canadian province in which they were born. My own grandmother was the eldest (and survived to 75) so born before the then family emigrated to Canada.
  13. Loved the music - all three.
  14. Some weathering - looks nearly real! Fantastic shot.
  15. Hectic day - some essential homework carried out successfully. Not into food but already eating something different because of 'shortages' (we all know how they have been caused) by lack of available food items during our weekly shop. Like others spending more time on the RMweb ... SWMBO is making sure that I do not 'go out' as she has discovered that there are three counts that put me in 'at risk' groups and son when available had to pick up my 'click and collect' order from Scr-wfix - delivered at a distance. It is frustrating but necessary. Have you seen the pictures of the crowds outside Dudley Yesco? In terms of medications Baz waxed eloquently some time back on the various side-effects of a number of them that a lot of us are on and statins are potentially some of the worst. Having recorded a number of effects that were magnified in terms of other medication came off them. Cramps - yes - treat as current FA standard method but these and the 'tingling' extremities are side effects of medication. The alternative would cause more serious problems with another medical condition that has meant no added salt for the last 70 years and a bit.
  16. But this is corona so 'forming an orderly queue doesn't matter anymore' may well be a common misconception.
  17. Looks like a great idea but thoughts: 1 Bit late now 2 Fine for the fit and healthy but not practical for the vulnerable Getting adequate groceries is proving more than impossible for the numbers needing as well as the 'TP problem'. Great news that Sharon has posted her PhD thesis and working it through as well as having very busy work responsibilities.
  18. Like a big tax increase to pay for it all!
  19. Thanks Bill, hope it proves not too exhausting.
  20. Welcome to the RMweb - look forward to seeing your progress. In terms of shed make your plan and then go for at least the next size up!
  21. Hi Guys, GCR is a big show and the decision has been taken well in advance because of all the work necessary beforehand i.e. lots of people working together, plus traders and exhibitors who are spending a lot of time and effort into making things right not to mention various potential aspects of 'life changing' isolations potentially coming that it would be better to cancel early rather than at the last moment so to speak. I will try and add the letter when located.
  22. That reply grates a little!
