  3. On another matter can anybody enlighten me, or reassure me that I am not being unreasonable? I'm getting a tad fed up at the fact that pretty much every televised game seems to manage to pick up some TW&T in the crowd who insists on shouting "AWAY" at the opp of his voice (you will have to imagine the disparaging mocking accent I used to say "AWAY" there) as soon as the ball is airborne from a corner or free kick. My understanding is that a shout of "AWAY" is an alternative to "time" "turn" or "keeper" for the benefit of a defender who has posession of the ball in his own danger area to prevent him taking the wrong option as a result of not being able to see the whole picture. It's not some sort of girly cry of pain to relieve the fear of a ball into your box, and is only relevant if one of the defending team is actually in posession of the ball. Answers on a postcard
  4. I agree wholeheartedly with this. You could add the apalling dive that Welbeck got away with and the two clear penalties Chelsea were denied to the list just from yesterday's games. Football is a multi million pound business and yet it seems unable to achieve the level of refereeing competence that (for example) rugby union does. When decisions can cost a club literally millions it needs to be addressed. "Top Flight" referees simply are not good enough for the responsibility they face. The game needs to invest in refs the way it does in players, and back them up with technology. Some key decisions need the benefit of video technology there and then, and many others like diving and off the ball incidents could be revisited later. It would, as B-H says, sooner or later deter this kind of behaviour. I know there are some amateur refs on here (and I don't mean people like me who get every decision right from the comfort of the sofa!) and I am not picking on them. They give up their time to support amateur football where all that's at stake is pride. I'm focussing purely on the top level of the game where we ought to be able to get it right. Edit rather than another post, but last night I enjoyed a really good game Everton v Newcastle, which began with a very touching statement of solidarity over Hillsborough and then went on to be potential game of the season until three bad decisions cost us three goals that could have just lit the touch paper on an all time great. First a goal for Anichebe wrongly given offside, then the ball clearly over the line - but another Anichebe goal ruled out. Almost instantly after that an amazing piece of skill from Ben Arfa saw him get up from being fouled to run clear through on goal, only to be pulled back by the ref and given a free kick in his own half! Refs shouldn't be able to have such a massive impact on a game. On that last incident it's probably a good job Pardew was already serving a touchline ban!!!
  5. Posted Today, in the demonstration goods thread: With regard to AVB on brake vans; As far as I can remember from Eric Gent's book, those BR Standard vans that had vac pipes were piped, though not fitted, but with a valve to allow the guard to apply the brake. I believe the LNER van which formed the basis for the BR designed was fitted. A couple of vac-fitted ex-GWR vans ended up in the Kent coalfield, being used to provide a 'fitted head' on trains between collieries and exchange sidings. Good news Spurs fans - looks like he's got a new job already!!!!!
  6. unlucky simon they gave it a good go at the end (which is the only bit I saw)
  7. UK readers: If you missed The InterCity 125: The Age of the Train documentary last night, you can catch it on iPlayer via the link below http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01mqv43/The_Age_of_the_Train/

  9. Why do we do it? Just finished watching England. It's like lime pickles in the curry house. Every time I do it, I wonder why - but next time, I do it all over again!
  10. Thanks for posting, really enjoyed a reminder of happy days living in Hungerford and popping down to the B&H on a nice evening after work, not to mention the pub at Little Bedwyn which was a real old one roomer. Heres a couple of oddities for you in return, plus one to prove I can take a nice photo if the conditions allow!: 1663 28/11/81 55016 gordon highlander deltic Devonian railtour 2102 30/04/83 1014 hastings 6 railtour 3233 18/07/88 56036 in petroleum sector livery on stone empties
  11. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Prima today, but not at the same time
  12. superb Dave, congratulations on the best thread I've seen on here and a smashing little model
  13. We certainly did a passable impression of a swiss cheese last night. I think Chelsea over the last two windows bought too many champagne players and failed to address the defensive midfield area which is massively important in the system we want to play. Ironic on the night that Essien went out of the club. Mikel has never quite reached the standard, Lamps would rather be one of the three than one of the two. Luiz might do well in there but we don't have enough defenders to spare him to play there. Don't get me wrong, Abramovich has been good for Chelsea overall but I think he's probably a railway modeller - he buys loads of pacifics on a whim without worrying about company or era, and wont pay for a tank engine or goods wagons.
  14. Watching the incredible theatre that is sky sports news on transfer deadline day. Wondering who the happy and angry fans are out there Spurs fans were my favourites for looking a bit sick, letting Vandervaart, Modric, Jenas and Rose go and getting nothing back. Did Dembele and Dempsey (shopping at Harrods again Mr Levy??) make you feel any better? Liverpool fans must be sick as parrots, all outs and no in's - good luck if Suarez gets injured! QPR fans - lots of faces in, and good riddance to that liability Barton Sunderland fans must be impressed - some really good business done including Fletcher and Johnson as the outstanding faces. As a Chelsea fan glad to see Benayoun out (why did we buy him in the first place?) and whilst I understand the need for it, sad to see big Michael Essien leaving - a great servant to CFC. Heres hoping that lightweight Michael Owen gets the club he deserves - a 9 iron cos he should have plenty of saturdays to play golf. Who else is out there watching??? Any views from other fans?
  15. Keep referring to us as Chelski what do you expect? We will sort out some more old rubbish to offload in your direction if you're not careful LOL You might be back from hols but you are not safe from the shed boys here...................
  16. this seems to me like a possible future RM web challenge, it would be really interesting to see how other people approach the compromises of the limited budget. Andy Y would have a nightmare trying to ensure people didn't cheat on the budgets, but he likes a challenge
  17. Looking at the last picture, either your horse is massive, or you found a dinky toy in the grass.
  18. Yep, and they were engaged because the elephants were making trunk calls
  19. I hope you took him back to his owners afterwards! (assuming they have come forward.....................) )
  20. Isn't the idea to come up with your own route to sub-£100 success rather than copy the OP? There are plenty of track bargains out there, I'm more worried about a pacific and 8 coaches within budget.......
  21. refraining from commenting on my own team i'd like to say well done Southampton. Keep that up and you will be the new Blackpool! Really took the game to Man City and deserved something to show for it. I like the way Nigel Adkins responded to each setback by a more attacking tactical option.
  22. The birds liked our pool last week in Corfu.....
  23. they just need to sign james mcfadden and dean whitehead, then there'll be no stopping them (disco fans will get it)
