Here are some pics of the test track I have been building. The District Engineer has been out to have an early look after hearing of construction problems and poor workmanship. In an initial assessment, the DE commented, 'Carpentry abysmal, baseboard will probably just about do, track laying needs more care to ensure joints line up accurately, turnouts satisfactory as far as they go at the moment. Recommend carpentry and baseboard construction be outsourced if standards cannot be improved significantly'. Oh! This is my first attempt at serious layout and track building and on a positive note I think I've learnt quite a lot, mainly don't bother. No, but I can see my standards will need to improve considerably to achieve something satisfactory to run stock on. For information, the outer radius is c. 30" with Easitrac except the turnouts which are soldered (no chairplates) construction. I used a Templot printout for the latter. I've yet to fit TOUs etc, so plenty of scope to screw things up even more before I try ballasting and adding the inner circuit. Nigel Hunt

Hi Jerry, Thanks for your comments about the 0-8-0. You've made a great job of it. As loco kits go I think it's pretty straightforward, the only awkward bit being the tender axleboxes/ springs. This is the only kit I've produced that only needed one test etch before finalising the production version, due to the simplicity of the prototype rather than my artwork design skills. Shame I've now retired from kit production just as I was starting to get the hang of it. Nigel Hunt

Hi Jim, Thanks for your comments. Some of the windows have scuff marks or traces of glue on them and there are one or two bits flakes of plasticard stuck inside the windows caused by drilling holes in the floor to aid ventilation. The sides tend to get scuffed a bit during construction though I managed to hide some off that with a coat of gloss varnish applied to the lower sides after the transfers were applied. In some cases the running numbers are not quite straight and level, though I thought they were OK immediately after I applied them. The sides are painted and lined for me by Ian Rathbone, and he does a really good job and gets a great finish. Applying the gloss varnish seems to have got them back to pre-build appearance. Nig H

Hello, Thanks all for the further comments and tips, all noted and appreciated. I don't think I'll glue templates to my work board in future. Concerning the electrical isolation, I wondered about the checkrails too, but when I tested the crossover track it worked. I had gaps all over the place so I must have had some in the right place - probably beginners luck. Nig H

Hello, Thanks everyone for your suggestions for removing the track from the base. The Tempolt template was glued to the work board so I couldn't turn it upside down and peel paper from the track. I soaked the paper in water as suggested and I was soon able to slip a blade between the track and the paper (gradually) to release the track. A couple of sleepers came adrift but only because they weren't soldered to the rail!!. Here are a couple of pics with wiring attached to run from the outer circle track to the other end in the inner track. I'd already tested the loco along the outer and inner circuits, and I quite pleased that the loco managed all the various routes. I suppose its no big deal for all you layout building experts, but a useful exercise for me. Soon I'll have to work out how to do the permanent wiring for crossing from the inner to outer circuit. Here is a pic of a point I have been working on. Its for my circular test track which I intend to use for track laying practice before trying a small layout. The loco got through the point work on the outer track although I had to move the track feeds to the other end to get the loco there. Since this was done I've finished off the basic point building and the loco seems to be able to negotiate all the points though I think there might be one tight spot it will struggle with. A useful learning exercise so far. I'm wondering how best to release the track from the template. I used Pritt to glue the sleepers down. Any advice gratefully received, also any other issues anyone notices. Nigel Hunt

Here is a pic of 44888 after lining by Ian Rathbone. He added the transfers too, and I think he's done a great job. I suppose I'd better add cab windows, coal, crew and a bit of weathering. Nig H

Hi Simon, The weathering step is another stage to mess things up. I've found it easy to get carried away and unintentionally get the Barry scrapyard look, rather than a more subtle result. I had meant to announce the release of the Fowler tanks by now but I missed the Newsletter deadline so I'm two months behind schedule. I contacted those people who expressed in interest to arrange purchases or not. I got the lined locos back from Ian Rathbone this week and they look superb. Nigel

Hello Richard, I'm impressed by what you've done. I think it might be useful if the underside of the base had the start of the filing line i.e. a slot included say 2mm wide and 0.5mm/ 1mm deep, depending on the thickness of the base. Nig H

Hi Simon, Looking really good, and I hope to see it in the flesh at some point. The areas round the boiler bands look glossier than the rest of the boiler. Have you added transfers sealed with Klear to represent the bands (looks effective to me)? Regards, Nigel

Hello Simon, If it's for the Dapol Ivatt chassis, you need the metric gear muff 3-102b assuming you are using all metric gears. If you had an imperial worm gear set, then you'd need 3-102a as Nick explained. I'm sure the 3-102bs were once described as 'stepped' eve though there was no 'step'. Nig H

Have you missed the lookouts off? This looks like a period 2 D.1782 TK but with the windows next to the end doors missing. The 60' opens had the doors between an end window and the bay windows. Many years ago I saw such a coach running (with the missing windows) on Trawden Junction. This looks like a TK maybe D.1899? I used 2-333 and 2-337 to make LMS 10' 8 shoe fitted underframes for the vertical plank LMS 12T vans. I'm not sure if the resulting underframe was totally prototypical but it looked right to me. Apart from having steel solebars on the etch, what is the difference between 2-385 and 2-333? Nig H
