  3. I used it to commute about 2 years ago and it was not too bad. The ban on lorries overtaking uphill helped a lot with traffic flow and not getting trapped by "elephant racing". Of course Covid helped too.
  4. It certainly sounded like he did, the noise ceased fairly quickly. As soon as steam was shut off the piston would get shoved to top dead center and stay there, but until then the valves would still be admitting steam throwing the piston back and forth hitting the cylinder cap in one direction and the piston rod hitting the remains of the crosshead in the other.
  5. People in the preservation world seem to be fairly resourceful if they need to be. It is a BR standard, so that part is going to be common with other locos besides Britanias. In other words there are going to be several of these parts around, some currently attached to a working locomotive, some not. All it takes is a little co-operation - Phone up owner of loco X currently under overhaul/out of service "Can we borrow a crosshead whilst we get a replacement cast, we will get another done whilst we are at it so you can have a spare too if you like" It is quite possible that the piston/cylinder ends could be damaged as they will have likely hit each other hard due to not being restrained by the connecting rod, but the same could apply to those parts too.
  6. Now if they had done a loco based on the Back to the Future part 3 time travelling steam loco they might have had some success. That was extremely steampunk, and tied in with a blockbuster movie and would even be of interest to collectors outside the usual Hornby customer base.
  7. Also worth noting that if it is declared a write off, insurance cover may be cancelled with immediate effect, even if your car is still drivable. It will be a marked car in the system and no-one will insure it until it has another MOT, even if the existing one has not run out. I have been in this situation. I was in a collision where I got a slightly dented door and a broken window. I patched it up so it was still roadworthy yet it was deemed a write off and I had to plead with them not to cancel insurance. I bought it back and I got a second hand door and window from a breakers and got it fixed and MOT'd for way less than the insurers would have spent as they insist on all new OEM parts, and had quite a bit of money left over!
  8. Indeed, the two photos are taken from almost exactly the same spot. Interpret that and the brake van immediately in front of the loco as you will!
  9. Looking at the pictures, it would appear that the "gauge change gate" is at the equivalent of the channel tunnels crossover cavern. It would appear that the train derailed, but on plain track the wagons stayed reasonably in line. When they hit the crossovers at the "gauge change gate" they split the points and all hell broke loose.

  12. Think it was also built with SepEx traction motors for trials. I seem to have a recollection that it was outshopped in the triple grey livery having never carried the Railfreight red stripe.

  14. The rattling at idle is pretty normal, it will be coming from the phasing gears between engine and generator, they tend to quieten down under load, but are most noisy at startup/shutdown - sometimes referred to as "shaking a bag of nails"
  15. Also the in the Ordsall Lane incident WCRC were completely blameless.
  16. I believe in the early days there was a service timed for one operational power car which was used as a way to get failures to somewhere they could be fixed - as long as the other one did not break down enroute!

  18. Possibly, but with the spread of axle counters it gets a lot more difficult to trick a section in to "occupied"
  19. Well I have been using H&M controllers for nearly 50 years now and I am not dead yet! However I have been exposed to plenty more asbestos than that from the controllers, when I was young it was everywhere!
  20. It is not often that an entire video justifies being in this thread, but I think this one deserves it. From an intercity class 86 pulling a MGR hopper amongst other things, to a train made up entirely from DVT's being controlled by the lead DVT, test trains, other weird formations etc, in this almost 38 min long video you are never more than a couple of minutes away from something that could be in this thread...

  22. Would something 153 like with 3+2 seating really not have been an option? Similar body, same number of wheels and just one engine/transmission so must be somewhat similar in cheapness.
  23. Several characters had their origins on Awdreys model railway. The original Daisy was a modified Triang unit - pretty much the only easily DMU available at the time so if he wanted to make a fairly straightforward single car DMU a cut and shut on a Triang model was one way of doing it. Similarly I think the original Duck was a Gaiety panier tank which had somewhat wobbly wheels and "waddled".
