  1. It does not matter how correct you are, even if you have 100% proof, Royaloak will try to discredit it if it does not match his opinion, usually describing something valid as 'Hardly'. See the previous discussion about the importance of power over gearing...
  2. Don't make too many assumptions. American Railroads have to deal with different circumstances, which may well mean that what works well in another country would be very difficult to install. It may not be possible to consider anything other than a radio based system as laying expensive cables along many thousands of miles of track, where existing signals are few and far between, could make something like TPWS prohibitively expensive compared to the UK. There may or may not be different reasons, but the significant difference in the way that American Railroads operate has to be taken in to account when determining suitability of equipment.
  3. And if they don't meet the deadline, they will face the severest of penalties. The penalty of having the deadline extended again. Meanwhile...
  4. I understand it is only mandatory for lines with a maximum speed of 80mph and above. So to avoid fitting it many lines now have an official maximum speed of 79mph, of which I think this is one...
  5. They don't seem to have a clue about the new Western Link to LHR either. The proposed link is designed for through trans from Reading to London Via Heathrow, whilst the chart implies separate platforms for each direction, with trains terminating and reversing and with different operators...
  6. There is a whole world of difference between "Unknown because nobody knows who they are" and "Unknown to me because I can't be bothered to find out before posting" It is unfair to present the latter as the former, particularly when they are in fact very well known to a significant number of people.
  7. I believe Lt-Col L. F .R. Fell had this problem too, although you would not like his solution...
  8. Once diesel is hot enough it will burn well. In my case the fire was too small to heat the diesel to its flash point, so the diesel did not ignite and smothered the fire instead. In accidents where diesel does ignite, it is because either it has been atomised to a fine spray and/or had a large input of heat. A fuel line breaking and spraying on to a hot exhaust would do it, and is quite a common fire starter.
  9. I manged to unintentionally put out a fire using diesel. One big puff of white smoke and that was it - no more flames, just oily cinders,,,
  10. I first read that as 'house' and it made sense until I got to the 'stables' punchline!
  11. If you are just talking cost of materials I am sure that the DJM version would be well under £320. However, back to the real world...
  12. Modifying the canopy is going to be tricky. It looks like it needs to be taken back significantly in order to avoid ripping off the pan, never mind electrical clearance! The only sensible way I can think of doing it with sufficient consideration is getting new shorter supports cast in the same style, that bolt on to the existing fixings so the look is maintained. The originals would then have to be appropriately stored/preserved. Wonder how much that is going to cost? It may also have the advantage of allowing W12 loading gauge.
  13. I would advise that you think things through a little better before making posts like this. This has only just been announced, what do you expect, Do all the scanning, cad work, research, test moulds and have an engineering prototype ready to photograph in under two weeks? And you are querying whether DJM is legit? A company that has an excellent track record of successfully delivering extremely high quality crowdfunded models already? You make it look like you don't have a clue what you are talking about.
  14. I expect that there was a standard axle length of five feet. This may have been more important as this would dictate the overall width of the wagon. Build it any wider and you may have difficulty fitting it down some streets and passageways, i.e. the 'loading' gauge was probably more important. Of course the consequence of a five foot axle is that the 'gauge' between the wheels works out at something near 4' 81/2"...
  15. Well there is this in Edmund street Birmingham: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.480598,-1.9033979,3a,75y,4.58h,84.44t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sivK2-klHCb0drYxkxYmw0A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en Wrong gauge for the new trams! Then of course the abandoned Kingsway Tram tunnel, Holborn, London: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5189724,-0.1210061,3a,15y,165h,81.57t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sdiwT4NZOZvoO2HuUoDiWSw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en A lot of tramlines were just tarmaced over. There is still a lot of forgotten track in Derby just below the road surface, and I expect a lot of other places are similar. Edited for typo!
  16. Rather ironic, since I have lengthened my name, not abbreviated it!
  17. If a German was to buy my 3 bedroom semi, change the name rent it out does it suddenly become a German house? Of course not, it is still as British as the day it was built. Similarly the company in Derby, which 100% designed, built etc etc, is still as British as the day it was formed, irrespective of owner or name, just as my house with a foreign owner would still be a British house. I sometimes wonder if the people who complain we never make anything anymore deliberately take this stance to support their views, so as to ignore/belittle all the stuff we do in fact design and make in Britain...
  18. I am really starting to get annoyed by lazy unnecessary abbreviations. It took a while to realise Durham trains is not Driving Trailer Open Second... I thought you were talking about buying/selling the first/last vehicle of the APT for a while which did not make sense until the penny dropped. The little 'o' was too subtle..
  19. Wish they had them on the cycle paths round here!
  20. "Four essential ingredients", and how many non-essential?
  21. They just stole some bags and a suitcase. The fact that the suitcase contained prosthetic limbs would have been coincidental. If they had known what was inside they probably would not have bothered. Sensationalist journalism at its worst, catering to those who are outraged without a moments thought...
