  1. Just noticed the distortion of the sleepers, I have a similar issue with images of diesels with grills taken side on. It only shows up after cropping and resizeing. If I crop and resize on the phone the image looks good then once uploaded the distortion appears, any thoughts as a more seasoned model photographer
  2. Talking of Lancia's Still exists and is currently insured. 47643 was a non vac loco seen here at Anderstaff lane crossing Burton on Trent. Picture is dated 1966 and the car is almost new. This would have been rare in RHD form even then!
  3. Compressed air powered, caption on Flickr states it was on of three. This one being based on a W4 workshop number668 the others used Hawthorn Lesley frames. I reckon it would be just possible to hide the motor under that sheeting, anyone(Ruston!) tempted to have a bash?

  5. At the risk of repeating a question asked before, where did you get the branded (Mobil, Shell)oil cans seen on various locos?

  8. Not quite correct Q plates were issued where the age of the vehicle could not be varified, some kit cars not using a VIN from a donor for instance. Ex MOD with a Q plate would have a similar reason. Imported vehicles of ordinary marques are easy to age for plate purposes(and VED, ULEZ etc). The MRJ issue is 146 the article also covers BR, som bus fleets and Royal Mail fleet iusses, 9 pages but one double spread picture. One interesting side note is cars in TV, some production companies had access to non issue plates. The Sweeney for instance every time they wrecked an old S type Jag, the car would carry one of the fake plates. I've seen Rover P6 V8's police cars in episodes at diffent times with either the same plate or consecutive number.
  9. See above, I tend to get stuck in with new locos and as this is tiny (compared to a class40!) it didn't take long. Inspiration came from Flickr by searching "Ruston 48ds". I don't use an airbrush and this was done with just two colours, a close match to Humbrol black and no62 Tan/Leather. A mix of Mig powders to get the grime in the corners etc. The Dulcote tends to dilute the the powders nulifying some of the effect, but by touching in whilst its still harding(its touch dry in about 20mins)it's possible to keep the effects you want. I sometimes use artists oils as well, using card as a pallette draws out the oil. Image below shows a POA wagon done with oils. I take no credit for the layout, it's a module and part of a larger layout belonging to my local module railway club,Manchester Model Railway Society.

  11. Here is the almost finished loco, just a Ruston bonnet badge from Narrow Planet, driver and oil cans from Modelu3d to add. So far it was about an hours work. First step was an overall coating of acrylic black/brown, thats the pictures above, with some of the paint wiped off with a cotton bud. The pictures below, show the finished model with added rust, red oxide acrylic with reddish powders dabbed on top. Plus a rough mix of black/brown for the rest around the footplate etc. A small amount of pencil graphite was the applied to the centre of the buffers and cab steps. The whole loco was given a coat of Dulcote matt varnish and as it dried a few areas of powder touched in and the windows clean(but not to much!). Cabside logos came off easily using a small amount of Dettol on a cotton bud.
  12. A work in progress, thats grime sorted, needs more wear and tear on handrails steps and some rust. I will also extend the exhuast slightly above the roof line and add an oil can or tool box somewhere, plus a driver, some three links and a wire loop for the wagons using tension couplings. Layout is a small module currently part of a Manchester Model Railway Society project and is not anything I take credit for.

  14. A recent purchase, inspired by an image from John Turner's Flickr site. A base wash of acrylic black/brown mix for the frame and body witha wash of dirty grey for the roof. Then powders and a spray of Dulcote. Chalk makings are from Raitec and a liqiud chalk on a cocktail stick.

  18. I left off the additional brake rigging detail until I have the steady hand and eye to do a good job!
  19. Having been over taken by temptation 012 arrived last week, here is the result of a few days work. Boiler plated over with etched parts (the full etch has all boiler options) from A1 models via their Ebay shop. A slow speed sensor added to the correct axle and drivers control box on the window pillar, crew, brew can on stove and an old newpaper down behind the drivers desk in the window. New numbers from Railtec, prompt service as ever!
  20. For sometime 25321 was the only TOPS 25 on my fleet, however I've now renumbered for a second time another Heljan cl25 so 321 will be joined by 25323. Pictures coming soon. A second class 47 has also joined the TOPS fleet, pictures on the Bachmann retooled class 47 thread.

  22. In typical transpennine style 47417 complete with Gateshead motif drifts into Dewsbury Midland with a Liverpool bound express.
  23. The paints are Lifecolor acrylics, mixture of black and what is described as frame dirt (humbrol 62 leather is a good alternative)plus a small amount of thinners. I just cover the model with a wash, if you want a really dirty look remove exccess paint when still damp(about 30 secs in this weather!)with damp cotton buds. This will have the effect of streaking when rubbing up and down, for a cleaner look wait for the paint to dry longer. Removing acrylic then has a sort off peel on the flat panels just leaving it in the detail. For the powders I have a large plastic lidded box which I keep the powders and a few old brushes, using this as a tray means I have a grotty mix in the bottom ready to apply. I use just three colours, black, dust and a red oxide(more for wagons), this is then applied on the model over the paint. Once I'm happy I give the model a blast of Dulcote matt varnish, this has the effect of reducing the weathering so with the varnish just touch dry reapply powders to any areas you want to enhance.
