  1. They're still my favourite brand overall, and in fact they're the only ones I wouldn't part with for anything. They'll certainly outlive me and probably my children as well.
  2. I've come to the conclusion that it's another case of Hornby's "that'll do" attitude without them really checking/researching properly. From memory I'm sure Lima made the tooling with the roof pods so either Hornby have used the incorrect tool or perhaps it's not available anymore through damage or similar etc? However the paint job is very nice indeed and the colours look spot on. Another example of perfect colours on Railroad items; something that Hornby seem to do better than in their main range... I'm pleased they've done one with a full height yellow end this time too. The previous one with its black cab roof always looked odd to me and spoiled the shape of the unit. Almost reminiscent of a 108 on a quick glance. But we still don't have a BR era Strathclyde PTE 101; all three so far have been early privatisation era (four if you count the blue one)... Maybe next time!

  4. I too like the Hornby ones, I just wish they'd run them more often... I seem to recall that the Bachmann ones are absolute PIGS to get into as well, or were, is this still the case?

  6. The Airfix Mk2D in Inter-City Blue & Grey were also made with brown underframes, so it was possibly BR policy at the time. Probably to hide the soon accumulated dirt. I seem to remember some of Hornby's 110s being similarly adorned, presumably for the same reason. And the Airfix 31..
  7. Whilst we're on the subject of Bachmann Class 40s, is it the 2014 models onwards that have lights fitted please? Not particularly bothered about cab lighting but forward lighting would be good.
  8. I'm pleased someone has brought this up as these sort of discussions always fascinate me. Personally speaking I've always preferred the darker, more used/worn shade of BR Blue so in this case the first Class 40 picture above. By the time I was old enough to remember BR Blue in use it was well on its way out but there were still many items of it kicking around. Most of what I remember seeing was workworn/weathered to say the least which is no doubt why I prefer the darker shade. More of a general workhorse colour if you see what I mean. This also seems to tally with old photographs and footage, though of course this isn't conclusive for various reasons as discussed many times. The lighter shade with a more green tinge seems to be what preserved BR Blue loco's wear these days, so is arguably the 'correct' colour (assuming they use the official paint colour!) When you see most of these they're immaculate and while there's an attraction to that, to me personally I like to see a bit of muck.. The beauty is you can do whatever you think is best. I'm happy to have a few varying shades across the layout as long as the difference isn't too glaring! Most of it is subtlety weathered anyway..

  10. I don't think there'll be any more 158s this time but a Northern Spirit one would be nice. Likewise I think this is a long shot but Regional Railways 101 and 117 too. Selfishly speaking, some bog standard workhorse Mk1s in Blue & Grey would be very welcome, plus some everyday Railfreight wagons too.
  11. The wheels have always been quite chunky but as a youngster I liked that because it never derailed... These days I'd paint the wheel edges/faces to disguise the fact and then let it run around merrily, though I understand why others would want finer wheelsets.
  12. I'd still really like the MetroTrain one. I'm hoping it might be reduced a little bit in a sale at some point but I'm not holding my breath.
  13. This bugs me too. I find a small dab of Tamiya Acrylic X-26 "Clear Orange" on either the bulb/lighting board (or lens if you don't want to take the body off) dulls them down to a nice dull yellowy glow. And if you put too much on or not enough on, it's not an issue because it's acrylic and so you can put more on or take some off easily until your heart is content. Here's my Hornby 153 that's had the same treatment.
  14. Unfortunately Hornby have a habit of printing the incorrect information. Poor quality control? Poor knowledge? Both? They also seem to have a real issue knowing the difference between Executive and Swallow (okay I know officially it was Swift to begin with but we all know it as Swallow and call it as such) liveries too. Last year's catalogue had the most errors I've ever seen in a Hornby effort; incorrect eras, wrong information, duff descriptions and even some previously used photo's of models that had been photoshopped to show them incorrectly when they were fine before! Even the boxes aren't safe it seems. I have three Hornby HSTs here; one is the original blue and grey, one is in (their attempt at) InterCity Executive and the other is in INTERCITY Swallow. All three boxes say Executive on them. I also have a 56 here with "Steam Locomotive" on the box. 😆
  15. Ah but what are they? First class, brake ends and restaurants no doubt. As always there's a constant dirth of second/standard class.
  16. On the subject of Hornby coaches I do hope at some point they do a re-run of their Mk1s and Mk2Fs. Preferably in Blue & Grey, and InterCity Executive. There's definitely a market for both of those. I appreciate the Bachmann equivalents are considered better but for someone like me they're also ruinously expensive and bit too fancy for my needs. The Hornby ones are perfect for me; cheaper but still look the part and less to fall off..
  17. The announcement of the Railroad HAA / MGR wagon is interesting considering they already do a main range one. Does anyone have any more info on this? The catalogue photograph looks the same as the main range one to me, although that could be because they don't have a photograph of the Railroad one yet I suppose. RRP is about £20 I think so with slight discount it might be available for around £17 or £18? I did wonder if they were simply moving their main range one into the Railroad range to tempt potential customers away from the Accurascale and Cavalex competition...?
  18. Absolutely. And of course back then the list of real life liveries per class was a lot smaller than nowadays where it's seemingly endless. The current BR liveries of the time also lasted longer in the real world too.
  19. I used to love the older style catalogues where they had pictures of the models on some kind of display layout rather than a computer generated image. I still buy one each year, probably out of childhood nostalgia and happy memories, plus a general love of the brand but of course that doesn't mean I agree with everything they do (far from it) and I'm certainly not blind to their many recent blunders either...
  20. Is the Green K1 the one that was used in Scotland at some point? Maybe on West Highland Line or Kyle Line trains? I have zero knowledge of steam really, but I seem to recall something 'like a K1' in green in an old photo once. If so I'd buy one.
  21. You say that but those trains/that set got around the UK a lot! There's pictures of it all over the shop.. The Manc Pullman was probably a bit more restricted? Is the Mk1 BCK the one that's preserved at Shildon? I think that's the one Hornby made in recent years. Someone on here a couple of years ago said the Mk1 Brakes used in the 'real' set were a different type but I can't say because I've no idea.
  22. Perhaps something smaller but really useful for modellers would be a good idea for Hornby. The recently released TTA is a good example; perhaps not a big and shouty product but one that would potentially sell very well for years to come? If they got it right... In a similar vein, any of their engineers wagons in Civil Engineers "Dutch" livery seem to sell well and you can never have too many of those can you...! Personally speaking I'm still patiently waiting for the INTERCITY Charter/Land Cruise coaching set, or at least some of them. Mk3 Sleeper/s, Mk1 Restaurant (of some kind, I'm no expert), Mk1 FO (I think) and Mk1 First Class Brake (again I think). I wouldn't even bothered if they're not 100 percent correct, just release them anyway!!
