  1. I'm aware that two (?) children who had strayed onto the line were killed near Crugwallins, west of Burngullow. I was told this by a local person who had a connection to the family and who was understandably reluctant to dwell on the subject. I got the impression it was in living memory.
  2. All of this is such a shame, when especially and remarkably for a ‘one off’ ( at least operationally) there is so much information out there, not to mention offers of help… I’ve not given up hope but on the strength of what we’ve seen my wallet remains firmly closed.
  3. I was tempted to order one of these but I'm glad I didn't. The newsletter doesn't actually tell us much, lots of flannel but few facts about the model. A further point about the new images. Unless I've missed something they haven't shown a recent picture of the centre cab window which was also a 'bone of contention'.
  4. When I was a little lad in the early 1960s I remember my Dad pointing out to me the marks and minor damage caused by shrapnel to the footbridge at Southampton Central - this some 20 years after the last bombs fell.
  5. I’m reminded straight away of Kings Cross passenger loco. Job done I’d say!
  6. On the Mink and four plank I purchased the back to backs were well over so as to cause derailments. They defied all sensible attempts to adjust them so I ended up replacing them with 'scale' wheel sets - of course these were blackened! 🙂 Not ideal but we are were are and I'm not going to get upset about it.
  7. Whichever kind of oily tin can you’re running Phil, it’s great to see the progress. Long may it continue!
  8. Sorry John but mentioning Subarus 'you've been and done it now...' On the Turini Going to work in proper weather. Hampshire believe it or not. On the quay at St Mawes. As Nick says it was pretty expensive to run and I had to sell it at a time when I needed to save money. It went to a good home, the proprietor of the garage that did my MoTs and servicing bit my hand off when he knew it was for sale. There are so many messed about and abused Imprezas around and he knew mine was a good one. He keeps it for 'best'!
  9. Can’t beat a good Subaru! I rue the day I sold mine.
  10. It's good to see you posting more layout progress Phil. Long may it continue! A good few years back I followed the footpath down to the tunnel 'just to see' and hoping there'd be a time warp along the way but of course it's nothing like it used to be. It's a shame that most photos were lost in the 'Great Crash'. I've only ever seen SJ in it's current semi derelict state, would it be possible to upload a couple of model photos for us latecomers? Keep at it!
  11. Thanks folks. I was pleased - no amazed! - how well that area turned out. Less so with the part by the light coloured warehouse behind 30064. That's why I've kept it in the background! I'll be having another go...
  12. Just to add. More than one ex-BR engineman of my acquaintance would wear their overall jacket inside the bib and brace. Apparently this helped to keep coal dust out of places you don't really want coal dust. No doubt it was warmer in winter as well. Another little point - and maybe it's just me but... I feel that many model engine crew, mainly firemen, have a far too exaggerated 'looking out' pose. I well appreciate that when a fireman isn't firing he should help the driver keep a look out but he should be doing this without getting himself - at considerable risk - too far out of the cab. I once saw a chap get a terrible whack on the head doing just this. He had a lump on his head the size of a large egg and this was a 5mph in a yard.
  13. Nearly two moths since the previous post but I'm gradually sorting out the back part of the scene. Mayflower Dock is in any case a kind of fill in project. At last I've managed to make some gates and as with several other parts of the project they've come from Scale Model Scenery although they are much modified. At the moment they are not fixed down, in fact the only structure forward of the backscene - except the road - that is glued down is the brick wall. For anyone looking at this who knows Southampton I'm aware the cafe was 'Ross's' but it's not exactly the same and also in a 'make believe' situation so I've called it 'Rossi's'. Ocean Trading did occupy the building a few streets away from the docks but I like the name so it stayed!
  14. Agreed, also I think there are many wives who are not supportive of their partners interests. Sadly there are countless posts on here to the effect that "I had to smuggle this past 'er indoors". We all know that Mo is hugely supportive of Tony. Luckily Carol is of my endeavours. Recently I have been seriously rationalising railway items that are no longer used plus a 1/43 rally car collection. There are no secrets and she is fully aware and pleased with what I am 'making' - especially when some of it funds a day out or a meal somewhere!
  15. Regarding drilling holes in aluminium roofs. I purchased a vertical stand for my Dremel (not just for coach roofs!) and have never looked back. Also a lot easier for the handrail/water pipe holes but you need a very light touch and lots of lubrication and swarf clearing.
  16. I’ve somehow missed out on the discussion over the pit. I have no idea whether there was or might have been a pit near Newquay but… I wouldn’t want to be oiling round a Castle without one. Is it possible there was a combined ash/inspection pit in a siding somewhere? Something that didn’t warrant inclusion in any official paperwork but was there for all who needed to know?
  17. The descriptions need to be taken into account as well Tony. Generally, with minor exceptions, if an item is removed from the packaging eBay considers it to be used. In both those cases the seller states that the contents are "undisturbed". However, he describes the kits as used. I would suggest that in this case he is both being honest and also covering himself in case something is missing - a part that he may not even know about... I've had few problems with eBay, both as buyer and seller, but it pays to be cautious. As with life in general there are always crooks and time wasters out there among the totally honest.
  18. Good to see the progress and good luck with that hip. I once had a work colleague who had a hip done under a local anaesthetic. He even watched it on the ‘TV’ above the operating table. “Fascinating,” was his opinion but “If ever they do the other one they can knock me out!”
  19. I'm going to Bristol to catch up with Copenhagen Fields which I've never managed to see. The only other layout there which I've heard of is Dobris which I discovered on RMweb by chance a week ago - that too I'm looking forward to seeing. I've never heard of the rest - perhaps a sheltered life! 😀 . They may be brilliant but based solely on the organisers information on the web I wouldn't be going...
  20. Looking forward to seeing Dobris. I didn't see a Czech railway in the very short time I was there a few years back but I've just looked at the thread and was immediately reminded of country station we saw in Slovenia which is not so far away.
  21. I'm guessing it depends on who owns the building. I've not found many 'old' colour pictures of structures in the docks but some were definitely green... The roof material looks like asbestos. All I remember of Bryce White's at Redbridge is a 'dark shape' (!) but you might find it worth looking at the Winchester Railway Modellers website and their model of Redbridge - you might be a member and know it very well for all I know ! 🙂 But as you say not too decrepit. It had a job to do after all.
