  1. When I was an undergraduate, given its history of activism which had started in 1968 and still went on, it was generally known as the 'People's Republic of King's'.
  2. Indeed. When there was talk of abolishing the apostrophe, my alma mater, Queens' Cambridge, was to be one of the four (I believe) recognised exceptions where it had to be retained. For those not asleep by now, Queens' was founded twice, by Margaret Beaufort and Elizabeth Woodville, and so has the plural possessive. The similarly named college in another place wasn't even founded by one queen, so no exceptional punctutation for them.
  3. We've had this happen on a Hornby 700 at Ormesby Hall as well. It lasted about 3 years before the slop in the coupling rod as it slid in and out of the slot in the pin affected the running. I changed the rods when I renewed the pin, but the new one did the same so I ended up bushing it using Gibson components.
  4. Would that have been R. A. (Bobby) Thom? I have a vague recollection of reading that about him.
  5. Robert 1, Duke of Normandy 1027-35. He was known as 'the Magnificent' and 'the Generous' in his lifetime and the 'Devil' soubriquet seems to have been the work of later writers and chroniclers, possibly by conflation with legend as suggested above. Or possibly as soon as he was unable to seek vengeance on whomever applied it, given the family tendency to violence which he seems to have inherited.
  6. Never heard of her but she's had an interesting career. Certainly wouldn't have looked at that picture and pinned her for someone who'd make an album produced by John Cale.
  7. Come A Long Way - Michelle Shocked
  8. God's Great Dust Storm - Katzenjammer
  9. Morning Mick, Yes, it is. There's just a nut on the fixed screw with Tacky Wax to stop it unscrewing. No springs, the bogie just stays on the track through it's own weight. It does all unscrew and come apart if necessary
  10. Brown Eyed Handsome Man - Buddy Holly
  11. Here you go, Mick. The arm pivots on the bolt you can see at the front of the cylinder and then attaches to the bogie centre where you see the nut. This is how you work out the pivot position:
  12. There's also the dodge of having it on an arm, but with the fixing point ahead of the bogie instead of behind. Barry Oliver suggested that to me when I was rebuilding a DJH C7 and it#snever been a problem even through the very tight pointwork on Grantham. There is a formula which I can send on if you think it might be useful.
  13. Happy Days, Lonely Nights - The Rhythm Sisters
  14. Buy Nothing Day - The Go! Team
  15. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - William Shatner
  16. Me too, especially then. It was a long time later that I saw the surviving members but they were a great night out. Edit - saying that, Steve Marriott on his own was pretty good, if I coud have afforded to pony up for the Small Faces, they'd have had a good chance of a booking as well.
  17. What he said. Have a look at the Iron Harvest on Wikipedia.
  18. I Will Dance When I Walk Away - Katzenjammer
  19. Girl Wants To Rock And Roll - Christina Aguilera & the Velvet Underground
  20. She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio) - Roxette
  21. They look like SNCF ferry vans. Specifically something like these: Quite a bit of Continental stock was trapped in Britain when war broke out and most or all of it went into Government service.
  22. Beth Orton? That's Beth Gibbons, surely. This is Beth Orton:
  23. It Don't Come Easy - Ringo Starr
  24. Let's Think About Living - Bob Luman
