  1. Hi David I do have Facebook as it comes in good use for research photos feel free to link to that group as I couldn't find it on the search. Thanks to others who are taking the time to have a look a what I'm trying to recreate all the comments are very encouraging that I'm getting it right. My girlfriend bought me an elgoo mars resin 3d printer for my birthday and I've been having a little play with it. From this to..... First up we have some NEM pockets as I'm in the process of adding kadees to all of my stock. A lot of the older Hornby bulleid Pacifics in particular need these adding. I've designed these myself based off the ones that come with Hornby couplings and can adjust the design for different heights on models if needed. This is the MK2 version as the first print I did was a little snug. The station windbreak has now been constructed from my bespoke laser cut kit I designed and was produced by York model making . I ended up using the 3d printed to print the concrete plinth at the bottom of the canopy to give a more detailed shape. This was printed in 3 interlocking sections then glued together. The 3d printed base just needs a blast of primer and then attaching to the canopy before putting it into place at the end of the station. I also thought it would be fun to try printing something small and detailed I found the STL files for a terrier online and have printed two of them off to represent my family dogs. These first two are not to 00 scale as they are about the size of a saint Bernard. This goes to prove that animals and figures should be possible to print. I'm planning on looking at how to 3d scan in people using an Xbox kinect in order to produce figures similar to how modelu does theres. I've done some design work for more of the station canopy beams as Ilfracombe had another completely different style for the station forecourt that have triangle brackets around a round post. This takes the count up to 3 so far on the different columns I will have designed and produced. All in all I'm pretty happy with how the 3d printing is going and it looks like its going to be a valuable tool in continuing the build. If anyone is interested into me going into more detail of the design and process id be happy to show more detail. Cheers Pete
  2. Today sees me finish the conversion of my Bachmann n class to the extended frame type using the RT models etch and white metal castings. Everything was given a blast of primer and then black paint and was all then attach via super glue and given a touch up with black paint to blend it all in. Before reattaching the smoke deflectors showing the blast pipes oil baths and frame extensions. The loco will be getting weathered again to blend in where it had also had a change of identity. Cheers Pete
  3. Cheers Phil it's always great to see more photos and I can now add taw valley to the list of locos spotted at Ilfracombe. Cheers Pete
  4. Finally some solid progress to report after finding that I had a million different things on the go at once I set my self the task of actually fully completing something. I've therefore been working on the station canopy painting and glazing. The front has had the telegraph fittings added and now just requires the signage which is currently being worked on. Tonight saw the first test fit and I'm really happy with the results. The cub scouts form part of a scene which I have copied from a photo taken in the 50s the end part of the station still needs painting and ground texture added and the part of the station with the canopy will also need to have the hard platform surface completed. I have also been putting together my laser cut windbreak kit that I designed and had laser cut by York model making. This will hopefully also be joining the rest of the layout soon. The goods store still needs completing and then it will be time to move onto the station building itself. Its just been my birthday and my girlfriend treated me to a very special present that I will be putting to good use from here on in. Cheers Pete
  5. This is a good little guide on how Chris nevard does his, I've followed it and I'm pretty happy with how it looks. Ballast, stick it down, small lumps of das clay pressed in then smooth and stippled with a brush before painting. Pete
  6. Could you please describe how you go about putting in your operating wires. On a lot of LSWR signals it seems that that compensation along the gantry is done by pulleys and wire/chain do you model this or have you found a way to cheat while seemingly still showing said details? Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated Cheers Pete
  7. Hi guys wondering if you could help me out? I'm looking to add both a stay alive and uncoupling actuator on a loco however both would need to use the blue common positive wire will this be a problem or can I only have one or the other ? Cheers Pete
  8. Hi people, usually being a steam modeller I have taken the plunge and bought my first diesel loco a bargain Heljan class 35 Hymek. I want to put sound in but it looks like there is a few different sound projects to choose from. Any suggestions and opinions from people who have used different sound projects would be of great help?? Cheers Pete
  9. Although Steam is more my thing I must admit I have been tempted to add an extra time period to layout. With the line under Western control and with Hydraulics and DMUs running. So far I'm planning on running it as the summer of 54 with the last Devon Belle and crimson and cream stock and then another time period of the Summer of 1961 with everything back in BR/SR Green and maroon/ choc and cream GWR stock. Hmm as if I don't have enough locos already Pete
  10. I've been working on the end of the platform which has involved some curvature. So I don't have to rip it up and move the platforms like last time, this time got the two widest carriages and worked out the required distances needed. Fingers crossed this will solve any gauging issues although I'm still a bit worried about GWR locos. For now I don't have any so I can't check, but in the future I'll get a couple to add to the timetable, hopefully they will fit.... Ready for the off. I've also given the canopy a coat of cream, next I need to mask that up so I can spray the rest of the support beams green then glue the 3d printed columns to the structure. And just for fun I lined them up to get an idea of what you'll soon see from the end of the platform. I need to order some more coping stones from scale model scenery to finish the edging. This part will also have telegraph poles, flower beds and a sandy covering added. As you can see the signal is also a work in progress. Cheers Pete
  11. Although I have returned to work and the station board has returned to my parents house I have continued on with the layout. I received my 3d printed canopy columns a while back and have continued with bodging the Dapol canopy kits together. This is full length canopy that should take me all the way along the platform to the stores shed. I'll probably have to scratch build something to fit the space over the main concourse. It now needs painting before assembling the roof and adding the glazing. Speaking of painting the columns had a blast of primer then Halfords ford meadow green and await being fixed to the rest of the canopy assembly. As described before there are two distinct pillar designs on this part of the canopy I've tried to replicate. I managed to book a short trip away to Cornwall the other week with the girlfriend. What a nice experience to get away. On the way back I managed to convince her to a detour via Ilfracombe and although it was a miserable day I got some good reference photos... The fixed distant has recently been reinstalled and is even fitted with a solar panel to illuminate the lamp. The slade tunnel portals that I will be replicating for the fiddle yard entrance/exit. Original SR concrete cast fencing from Exmouth junction. Sr unclimbable fencing at the bottom of the stairs leading to the station which even had some of the original paint on. Ballast bin Pway hut looking a bit sorry for itself. I might have got rather soaked through but was happy to get another feel for the place aswell as get some handy photos. Cheers Pete
  12. Hi David, another excellent photo on your layout, would you possibly gives us a guide or more in depth description of how you weather your locos as it looks very realistic? cheers Pete
  13. Similar story unfortunately, I ordered July 25th had email saying order confirmed (but stock isn't) and money taken from PayPal and have heard nothing since. been trying to ring most days but goes to answer phone and have emailed but just get the auto response back. very frustrating experience and coming up on three weeks since the order it would just be nice for an update. Pete
  14. What seems more odd is the fact that hattons seems to be the ones releasing the info yet Dapol stay silent
  15. I reckon someone at hattons got mixed up with the mogul as they've now just posted this on Facebook.
  16. I'm looking to source various fencing types to add to my Ilfracombe layout. When it comes to the SR concrete posts there seems to be plenty of choice with Ratio and Dart castings giving you a couple of options. What I am struggling to find is SR unclimbable fencing. I've seen others mention that some of the ratio stuff might pass off for this but when searching I couldn't see anything suitable. Langley models seem to do the right kind of fencing but they only seem to do that in N gauge. GWR Spear fencing is obviously different to the SR type however I guess you could cut the spears off? I am also trying to get hold of platform gates/ full height iron fencing as this was a prominent feature at Ilfracombe. Again having searched all the usual suspects I'm a bit stuck with the only potential solution being a custom laser cut/ using a silhouette cutter. All suggestions welcome and maybe this can help as an index for other SR Modellers. Cheers Pete
  17. Hi Richard your layout of Sidmouth is excellent, I hope to one day see it in the flesh. Where did you source your concrete post SR iron fencing from as well as your SR 4 Wire fencing? I'm looking to get hold of some for my Ilfracombe Layout? Cheers Pete
  18. I wonder if @Graham_Muz has yet ? RT himself does have a little guide on his small traders page, when he first talked about releasing it. Will be keeping a close eye as I plan on doing the same at some point. Pete
  19. If your looking for a particular set which these would have worked in then having a look on the semgonline site as it has an excel doc with them all on where they were allocated ect. It's handy when trying to put different sets together and comparing to what Hornby have made. I've adapted the sheet over the years to make it more useful for my own purposes using other resources but it's a great starting point. Cheers Pete
  20. One side of transfers and plates down one to go. Cheers Pete
  21. R4768a is the high window variant seen in the earlier built coaches and r4300D is the lower window version. For some reason Hornby seemed to produce more high window olive maunsells first and low window malachite/ BR ones and have recently reversed this by producing said liveries on the opposite coaches. Cheers Pete
  22. The passenger luggage store was constructed of concrete blocks and asbestos roofing when the station was extended in the late 1920s this made unloading of busy holiday trains much easier for platform staff. The foundations for the store were also built by concrete blocks and the buffer stops at the end of the platform and the goods reception siding were built into these foundations as can be seen in this photo. I therefore decided to start with some spare peco platform edge and cut the slots into it where the buffer stops needed to go. I then used wills concrete block sheets to add the blocks in between the slots. This was then added onto the rest of the plasticard base for the store and given a spray of grey primer. York model makers have produced the windows for me by enlarging one of their designs that they offer. These have an edge around them to make them easier to fit. Glue n glaze will be used to glaze each window to get a flush finish. Currently it's just held together with black tack while I continue to paint and glaze the building here are a few shots. From the platform which will eventually be under a canopy. From the taxi building across the forecourt. End of the line at the buffer stops. Today I've begun to mock up the roof of the building out of card. I will also make this out of various plasticard. Cheers Pete
  23. looks like its been a while since I've posted but fear not I have been making progress all be it in other avenues. With the weather being either boiling or stormy recently its meant there have been few opportunities to get the board out in the garden to finish of some bits of painting however one morning I was able to get the airbrush out and work on the carriage siding colours and there is now some more variation in tones. This has also meant that I have spent a lot more of my time recently renumber and chipping my locos some of which can be seen on my other thread. I have made a start on the first part of the station canopy by joining together so far three of the six Dapol kits the roofs are yet to be attached as they need to be painted first and glazing attached. I have another three kits to go which will just be joined onto the ends. I won't however be using the crossbeams or the columns that come with the kit and instead have been designing alternative ones that will be produced by 3D printing, There is two distinct types the first being square beams with rivets these seem to be on further end of the canopy then they change to thinner beams with a zig-zag cross bracing on them the closer you get to the station entrance. Due to me modifying the the Dapol kit I have designed these to slot into the frames therefore I need some double width ones for where one kit joins onto another. Therefore I need to get overall 4 different types made. They were drawn out on Sketchup online free and were then made into models ready for printing on makeprintable.com this ensures they are "watertight" and suitable for a 3d printer to print without you ending up with a mess. I have then gone to 3dprint UK who will print them from SLS material. This is my first attempt at anything like this so fingers crossed. I have also been in contact with York Modelmaking after @landscapes suggestion and am in the process of them making me some lasercut windows and doors for the station and stores building. These should be with me in the next couple of days which is great as I have already made a start on the stores building as you can see, This is made out of wills concrete blocks plasticard as well as various thickness plain plasticard and the doors have are slaters wooden planks which look way too big for 4mm scale wooden flooring but I think look good as doors. Once I have made some more progress I will show you some more detailed shots of the building as it has a few features that have made it an interesting build. I have also been designing the station wind break on an open source CAD program called LibreCad and have then been able to send off the design to the same people who will hopefully be able to cut out all the parts for me to then assemble as a kit. Finally I have also mocked up the station taxi building for the corner I don't have space for the entire building but will squeeze as much of it in as possible. So yeah, I have been busy and although there isn't much progress on the boards themselves things are steadily moving along. I am now waiting for all of the bits I've designed to be produced and arrive and then I can continue to make some more serious progress. Thanks again Pete
  24. Recently I have been renumbering a number of my locos to make them suitable for my layout. This has allowed me some more practice using pressfix and waterslide transfers in preparation for doing to transfers on Sir Archibald Sinclair. The loco has recently had another coating of satin varnish so that it was somewhere between satin and gloss, I was then happy with the finish on it ready for applying the transfers. Having got a little experience with lining when adjusting Tangmere and Salisbury I knew that a lot of patience was going to be needed, I also found that as I was using much longer strips a good technique was to anchor one end in place with a cocktail stick then while holding the other end with a bit of tension try to lay the banding down. Sometimes this would work and other times it went all over the place. Lots of small nudges to get everything to sit in place were needed. Some parts bottom body line was a real pain as you don't have much to check that its in line however on the top line you can count the rivets and go by them. One side down and one to go lining wise. Iv'e still got to complete the cabside number and power classification and have ordered some more early emblems from fox as i realised the HMRS ones rely on the fact that your background is black otherwise the British Railways part of the emblem will be in this case green, I'm pretty happy with how its going so far and am now nearing the end with just the transfers and plates left to go on and DCC sound to be fitted. Once I have got more done i'll try to snap a better photo outside once the weather gets better again. Cheers Pete
