  1. Broccoli was carried in cattle trucks, Bananas in (at first) steam heated vans and then later in insulated vans. Fish was carried in both ventilated (to let the pong out) and insulated (to keep the pong in) vans. Some meat vans were ventilated but I think this topic has shot my very serious enquiry HR meat vans in BR daysin the foot!
  2. I believe they worked all over. (Except the SR.) The main sphere of operations was the Eastern Region. Here is a variant at Coatfield (just below Hatfield) fitted with a device to detect the differences between Bachmann and kit built LMR 4mt 43xxx 2-6-0s. It is coupled to an Anorak Van. The Anorak Van is very interesting as it is an ex LNER diagram 172. Built unfitted, they received vac brakes, tie rods, low vac pipes, strengthened buffers and BR pattern axleboxes as part of the 1956 modernisation scheme. However the axle box tie rods are absent on this one. ( a feature of some fitted ex SR diagram 1458 vans too) The conversion to Anorak Van mainly involved the interior. This was padded and had the bars and hooks from redundant ex LMS diagram D1672A meat van M114995. This allowed one the facility to hang up all ones cameras and plastic carrier bags.
  3. If you could write the contact information on a ten pound note and post it to me with a SAE. I will send you a thank you letter.
  4. Like/Informative/helpful. (why can't we vote on Blogs?) Sir - your reviews and advice are first class! On reviews some magazines have Hornby etc advertising so punches have to be pulled. Re the photos - it was limited pocket money - do I buy a film or a Airfix Cement wagon. A Railway Modeller or a Trains Illustrated. I saved up 2 weeks to afford developing/printing. Ahh nostalgia isn't what it was. Happy days but I would't want to go back.
  5. A Dorodo is preserved at Bridgenorth, Colin. Here is a late 80s shot
  6. Unfortunately on the day my very good friend and I took the photographs someone did take it seriously. An obstruction was placed on the track! Although the RCD van was unaffected the bogie on the second vehicle derailed. The obstruction was later found to be a Mk4 five eights be one rivet.
  7. Does anyone have any information on the RCD vans converted from ex GWR dia N12 horseboxes by BR? Photographed at Moretonhampstead 1- 4- 59 this example seems to have had the under frame rebuilt with new brakes and roller bearings.
  8. My memories are of trains that went on for ever. The 4fs also did some excursions so 11 coaches too. Of course the pick ups could be a few or a lot. The only photos I took were grotty Under The wires - Box Brownie Days - Galleries - RMweb
  9. I went to teacher training with AJW so mine is a double bells too.
  10. Good site and good stuff on the Bach 4f. How do you find it performance wise? I have a couple of old Airfix 4fs on Comet frames but I couldn't get enough ballast in them to pull much. In fact anything over 33 wagons and there was more wheel spin than a 1965 mini cooper!
  11. 44454 This is from the great Database I told you about BRDatabase - the Complete British Railways Locomotive Database ...
  12. Hest features in a book "Memories of Steam" Thanks for the Memory! (Andy does not give the option of musical notes)
  13. Well Thank you it took me ages to find it but here it is Older models do not have the flexibility of more modern body tooling, offering slide options for chimneys, domes, cabs etc. They were produced as one type and one type they remain and it is totally uneconomic to scrap perfectly good tooling on the basis that it cannot offer an alternative chimney style. Alternative fittings are available from other suppliers for modellers who wish for a bespoke locomotive for their layouts. We did replace both the Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 and the Jubilee 4-6-0 with entirely new models and, taking into account the tens of thousands of these already in circulation, sales of both of these have been no different to, had they just received a chassis upgrade, such as those on the A4, B1 and V2. Hence, the decisions we have taken to upgrade chassis only; allowing valuable production slots to be better utilised by bringing totally new models on to the market place. So same body
  14. I emailed Bachmann about a month ago with the questions on the retooled body. I have had no reply so I assume the following, New chassis, new bogie but the old undersized cylinders. Same old unacceptable (to some) body.
