  1. Had to read that twice. I though for a moment you were going to demolish everything

  3. Impressed with your track building Andy, makes that Peco flexi look horrible. Are you going to use cork underlay on your track? I think that using it gives a much better depth to the ballast. Having seen some layouts recently where the track is fixed directly to the baseboard then ballasted there is no depth to the cess. Regarding ballasting, if I were you I would stick to the tried and tested methods. Sticky tape may look ok in the short term, but adhesive can dry out or go the other way and become a sticky mess. With widely varying temperatures that you will encounter in the Potting Shed I would err on the side of caution.
  4. Hope you are ok Andy and that cold has not got you down, its been rather quiet on here today. Just poured a nice whisky and thought of you, so I doubled it up.
  5. I usually create a space around me, work forward and then the space behind gets filled up again
  6. This is nowhere near Tony's photographic excellence but my photo of Graeme's six-wheelers really did look at home on the M&GN.
  7. As a very welcomed visitor to Little Bytham today I can certainly echo Tony's words about the A4 and King. As a diehard LNER fan it was a little disconcerting to see a copper chimney 'streaking' away in such fashion, although it was slipstreaming the A4 A lot firsts today, first vist to LB, my first ever video taken on my wife's ipad, which I hadn't really a clue how to work and then a first ever upload to YouTube. Don't know if these videos will work, but here goes.

  9. I remember visiting RAF Wittering in the mid 80's. We were shown aerial photos that the Harriers were taking of local places. The incredible detail was outstanding and I have not seen anything in the public domain today that matches the quality back then.
  10. A bit off topic, but the photo below shows defective wagon storage (bottom right) at Peterborough East. The road access was officially named Cripple Lane Sidings. Another interest is one field to the left beyond the large hedgerow which was and still is Peterborough United's football ground, although its changed a bit now and Cripple Lane Sidings has new housing built on it. Another shameless plug, Westwood Works, http://www.westwoodworks.net/HowItWas/TheRailwayConnection/index.htm
  11. There were substantial wires over the Nene going south Britain From Above is a nice site. It is best to register, costs nothing, then you get the options to magnify and scroll photos. Most of the photos of Peterborough are before 1958 but still useful. Covers other parts of the country as well. http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/asearch?search=peterborough http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/
  12. If I could model like you guys then I might be a genius, until then I'm just an ordinary bloke with a little bit of computer knowledge just trying to help out
  13. He's too busy on point duty
  14. Now you have Jason's point to work from and you know it works stick with that as your pattern and all will be well. There has been some good discussion in the last few pages but it has got quite confusing at times but I think we have all learned a lot more about building track then we ever knew before.
  15. Your welcome Mike, easy to do now you know The photos are much better now than the postage stamp size you were posting before. One click on a photo and I've got a screen full of S&C, great
  16. That's the best laugh I've had all week
  17. OK, pleased you like it, instructions by email sometime tomorrow.
  18. Just a test post Mike to show you how photos can be larger than what you are posting at the moment. If that is what you want I'll go back to email and give you instructions how you can do it in the future. If you click on the photo it will enlarge and it is still only about 300k in size I am using Firefox browser and zooming in at 150% the enlarged photo nearly fills my 23inch screen with no loss of clarity at all.
  19. I am sure that is correct. Take the photo below showing weighted levers: If the wagons came out of the yard the wheels would throw the points as they pass through and the weight would return the point blade to its current position. When the wagons return to the same siding a human would pull the lever away from the track and hold it in that position until all the wagons have passed, when releasing the lever the weight would return the point blades to their current position. There is further reading with the links below, some of it is heavy going and I cannot say from scaning them quickly that it says the lever has to be held all the time. http://www.microlp.co.uk/Homea/homeafiles/Point%20types%20NL3-020609ni.pdf http://www.valleysignals.org.nz/track/springpoints.html http://www.irse.org/minorrailways/publicdocuments/PA01%20-%20Mechanically%20Operated%20Points%20v2.pdf http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/mines06.pdf
  20. Weighted (sprung) points: Have a look here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91833-hand-operated-points/?hl=%2Bweighted+%2Bpoints&do=findComment&comment=1639439
  21. I'm about your age Andy. I find the mind is willing to do things but the body can't do what it did ten years ago. I have got my wife's mother and father who are both nearly 90, who need daily care which my wife does and I am doing all the maintenance and running their affairs, so basically running two households and it gets hard work at times. We are about six miles away and they always want something doing after I've got home, arrrrgh. As to your health, you told us all a little while back so its not hard to have a reasonable assessment of how you are. You are a very sociable and likeable person, who likes to be friendly and helpful to everyone you meet. That is all too apparent from just reading this forum. Yesterday and today's posts just on the Bitton thread alone have taken me ages to read and digest. But you Andy are not only reading them, you're brain is whirring away replying to most of them, creating new posts, some with photos and that all takes an enormous amount of time and effort. Then, you are all over the forum looking into and contributing to other topics as well. Then, you are doing all these other things like track building, shelving, etc., etc., in between. How you find time to walk the dog I don't know. or is the dog taking you for a walk. So all in all I see you rushing around non stop all day long without pausing to recharge the batteries once in awhile, which in the long term is not good for your overall health. Please don't think I am criticising you Andy, far from it, it is just what I have experienced with my own family and friends that sometimes makes you stop and think a bit. Good news with the Optitions this morning. That will make you raring to go even more now.
  22. ANDY, slow down a bit, you are getting information overload and rushing about doing as much as a twenty year old. We all want to see a railway built but not at the expense of your health. You have had one warning this year, just take it a bit easier please.
