  1. In light of Richards death can a moderator close this thread thanks Colin
  2. Hi Guys I have just stared to follow this post and I was wondering where I could get imperial sized wheels for Sn2 from say 1/8" to up 1/2" I should say that I don't own a lathe or a computer good enough to install Cad on at present.
  3. I will need to find the website again, but I copied the old signal cabin track plan which is extensive to say the least and it is that which I might use as a basis, the only thing it does not have and that is the recent sidings that have been install for the Oil traffic, the one thing I like about it is that it has five routes into the station itself, which from a modelling point of view means that you could have four different railway companies running trains into the station.
  4. I never got to meet him, but I have always likes his model of Castle Rackrent. It has only been in the past few months that I decided to try and find him and ask his advice on all thinks Irish, I have over the years built up a collection of 3ft Irish Kits in 00n3 which need to be built, but I have always considered Richard as one of those inspirational modellers along with the likes of the late David Lloyd who built Coolcalaghta. It was also one of the reasons I wanted to contact him to find out what loco and rolling stock plans he had for Irish railways. in the past few months I have become interested by three Irish stations which have modelling appeal by the bucket, they are all a bit on the large size, they are Strabane on the GNRi / CDRJC, Downpatrick on the BCDR and finally for now at least Claremorris on the MGWR. I just hope that where ever they both are they can enjoy the Craic
  5. Just a though I wonder if it is worth contacting Bill Bedford direct and asking him what those parts are for? Colin
  6. Hi all I am trying to find out a bit more about this magazine and who the editor was in October 1998? My reason is that it published a little know photo of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in that issue. Did this magazine morph into another magazine or did it just stop trading? Contact details of the then Editor would be most welcome. Regards Colin Rainsbury
  7. Hi guys is there any up date to this query? as it is 3 years since the last post (2017) Colin
  8. Oops keyboard sticking thanks for the correction Colin
  9. Hi all I wonder if anyone can help, does anyone have any contact with Richard this day and age as it has been some time since I have heard anything about Castle Rackrent and I was interested as to what has happen to it. Also I understand that he might have a few plans for MGWR buildings and such like, that I would like to obtain copies of. If you can PM me with any details I would be grateful, thanks Colin
  10. By the sound of it I think I will wait before ordering anything, as I suspect there are going to be people who need to order stuff and get it right now. Colin
  11. Hi Guys looking at the first photo I see you have used the American style of baseboard building, can you confirm that the big timber section inthe middle of the photo is in fact a Tee section and not a box. This is one of the first non American layouts I have seen constructed in this way and it looks terrific. I also like the idea of using grey primer as well Final question for now is the quarry building from a kit or have they been scratch built? Great looking railway.
  12. I like the idea of spirals at each end of the stations, that sounds like it could be fun, the FY could be at say 3ft and the first station could be at say 3ft 9ins then one long run around the outside of both stations to the second station then a second spiral down to meet up with the FY again.
  13. Thanks Guys some good answers and I can see a solution with them.
  14. Hi guys. I have a question. I think most of us have or in my case still do think about building an American style room filler. The layout will consist of at least two stations and a fiddle yard. But I was wondering what do you all think about how much clear running line is acceptable between stations in a room of 20ft x 10ft the layout is Irish broad gauge in 4mm scale? I would like to run 7 60ft length bogie coaches or 14 30ft six wheeler coaches as the idea train set size. Any suggestions?
  15. Thanks Guys, Looks like I will have to wait until C&L are up and running again to buy some this stuff to have a play with, I am starting to play with templot at the moment and I have got the basics, it is just a case of getting my head around such things like doing a diamond crossing. I will get the hang of it at some point.
  16. Hi Martin Just re read you notes about the Irish modelling forum, if any one wanted more information this is a good place to start, if you are in to the steam age you might find this a bit to modern, but don't forget that up until recently there has not been any RTR Irish models, I think Murphy's Model's have caught the imagination of the Irish railway modeller at the right time. I am just wondering how much it would cost to produce a (and I would guess it would have to be flat bottom code 75 rail section) a plastic flex track base for 21mm gauge. I have already asked on the Irish forum if anyone has heard about this before, but no one has. I do appreciate the fact that it would be a very small market for such a product, but I am sure there are enough people out there willing to give 21mm gauge a try if everything was not so difficult to do, if by making laying the track that much easier and thus allowing more time to build the point work, I am sure we would see some more very fine Irish layouts on the exhibition circuit. Colin
  17. Thanks Martin I have that one and I am a member of a number of Irish forums and New Irish Lines magazine, I think sometimes that British modellers do take it for granted about historic information being available about the railways of the UK. What I have come across so far with the Irish scene is that people didn't always take notes of what was going on around them when it comes to Irish Railways, it is only after the 2 World War that information was collected about the different Irish Railway companies as such, of course there are a few Irish Heritage groups, but no where near to the same level as we have in the UK. This layout has been in the planning stage for the best part of 20 years, it is not going to be a second Fry railway system in 4mm but there is so much out there that no one can get bored with finding something to model, I do suggest if anyone has a few hours (you are going to need it) to look at the Irish OS map service and go back to the 1950's and check out the track plans http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,615364,750893,0,9 you will not be wasting your time, honestly. Colin
  18. Hi Guys I wonder if anyone can help me, I am playing around with the idea of an Irish 21mm gauge layout. Now many years ago someone produced a plastic flex track base for 21mm gauge? Can anyone tell me who it was please, I am also in contact with a few other 21mm gauge modellers so if we have to talk minimum orders I think it could be done for a new batch to be made. Regards Colin.
  19. Hi Leslie Like some one above has said I would be interested in a few (say two of each size) once the money was back in place, the only thing is they would need to be able to run on 21mm gauge if that is possible. Colin
  20. Hi Guys I am just wondering if this coach body has an equivalent brake van body anywhere which could be used to make up some freelanced coaches, I don't want to just cut up a Ration kit or an old Hornby Clerestory coach body at this point as I am looking for something different if that is possible for an Irish theme 6 wheeled coach. Colin
  21. Thank you David, the name came to me during the night and I was able to confirm that via the map thanks for your help, it bugs me when I have these sort of things happen. That to would be a great place to model, I wonder just how many modellers in the UK would believe you, that you could have a railway station with that sort of working pattern to it. Colin
  22. Hi Mike is this the link http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/4325-A-six-wheel-coach I would love to contact the guy who also had the drawings, but for some reason I cant join the group. Update now sorted
  23. Thanks Colm. I agree, it is more about getting the right feel for a location, there are a number of problems which I will have to face at some point, one of the them is the lack of prototype rolling stock. But as it is will be part of a bigger project I feel that I can, to start with, use some converted British outline rolling stock for now such as those sold via the unpainted Dapol range, as for carriages I do have a few Triang Hornby Caledonian and mainline LMS coaches coaches which don't look to much out of place for now, but will do for now until something better comes along. One thing is for sure I will need to build up some 4 and 6 wheeled stock at some point so I think a number of Ratio GWR/ LMS kits will go through the rebuilding milling at some point. One item of Irish rolling stock I need to look at and that is the typical goods and cattle van, no one as far as I am aware makes model of them and besides the cattle wagon are the second most common wagon to date which makes an Irish layout unique. The BCDR had some unique Goods and Cattle vans which I do have the side drawing of from Des Coakham's Book, but if any one has any more details about them I would be please to hear from you, I think they will need to be to be made in resin. It will take time to build up the true Irish railway rolling stock but at least it will be a start, I have also come across this guy http://www.provincialwagons.com/index.html as a source for some wagons. One other item that I have been looking for but I can't find is an old article from the railway modeller back in the 1970's I think it was of a an Irish station that had an overal roof but the operations was unique. the train would come in from one direction into the platform and would then have to reverse out of the station before it could continue on its journey, the same thing would have to happen in reverse for a train coming the other way, but for the life of me I can not recall the name or location of this station can anyone help? Thanks Colin
  24. the Southern Railway N class was 57ft and 9 5/8th of an inch in length so I reckon that it is safe to say that the Woolwich's where about the same as well..
