  1. Hi thanks I hadn't to be honest, I can tell you where to get most things for the Irish Narrow gauge, but this broad gauge stuff is all a bit new to me, looking up bits and pieces and trying to find some of these suppliers takes me in to new locations which I have not heard about before. I think that I will try to keep the atmosphere of Downpatrick as best as I can in the model, but just how much of the station buildings get build is another matter. If and when I come to modeling a certain building and I can't find a decent photo or details of the building then I may just replace it with something as close as possible or a generic B&CDR style building if it is possible..
  2. Thanks Kirley, Hopefully Colm will pick this up at some point, it would be a good Idea to hear from him. I have just come across a photo of a jeep at the Belfast end of the line and I have also seen a few NCC ex LMS coaches at a much later date than I was thinking of modelling on the line. So the question is which was longer the NCC W class 2-6-0Tender loco or the CIE Woolwich type. I didn't want to install the wrong size turntable on the layout, but at the moment it comes down to either of the two South Eastern Finescale turntable kits.
  3. It has been a while since I updated this thread but I have taken a fancy to the Belfast and County Down Railway station at Downpatrick, not only is it a terminus but also a through station as well. I might just try converting some of the Ratio GWR kits to build up a rake of these coaches to have to try out..
  4. Hi all Over the past few months I have been thinking about building an Irish Broad gauge layout as part of the bigger picture of modeling the Irish railway scene. There are many stations which could be modeled, but the plan is to build a station based on a prototype. There are no shortages of stations that I would love to model, but you have to start somewhere. I don’t claim to be an expert on Irish stations, but I do like certain ones. Both Downpatrick and Strabane appeal to me one as a terminus and the other as a link station to the Irish Narrow gauge systems of Donegal. Well If I happen to live long enough to get both built, then I will be a happy man. I openly admit that I prefer the Irish 3ft gauge or OOn3 stuff any day, but you get to a point where an Irish Broad gauge layout or two beckons and while I would like to do something based on say Kilarney (I think that is the one that comes in to the platform and then has to reverse out to continue it journey on), I am taken by Downpatrick as you have to almost do the same sort of operation there. I have worked out a layout design which would be 10ft by 10ft at a 1200deg angle which would give a vee shape layout which just so happens to be Downpatrick to a tee, so far so good. Also having also just realised that the new station building by Metcalfe could also pass for the old Downpatrick Station building also has it good points. How ever and here is the problem I have I don't have any photos of the turntable at Downpatrick at the moment, but I am interested to find out what size and type it was, for the model I am hoping to use something like the CIE Woolwich 2-6-0 as the largest engine on the model so I am asking if anyone can tell me any more details about the size of the prototype turntable or would it become part of the modelers license and I could use a modified Airfix/Dapol turntable kit in its place? What do you guys think?
  5. Hi all I was wondering if there has been any up dates to the last post in 2014? Regards Colin Rainsbury
  6. I got the impression some time ago that while he is a great guy and wants to do a lot of things, but he has found out that there are a lot more problems than he was lead to believe, also I think he is/was also looking after his parents which is what I have had to do as well so I know only to well what that can add to anyone's situation. One manufacture which I was wondering about and that was K's Kits? does anyone know what happen to all the tooling or brass patterns? Some one on another list said they where still about but no longer making railway white metal models, can anyone confirm this and do you have a current address, Thanks
  7. A man after my own heart on this, I too have a narrow gauge layout project which is far to big for the room I have got to work on it, but so many people say to me you have got to built something which fits your space and I say I am.
  8. Hi Guys I have been having a though, I know that age creeps up on all of us, but I cant stop thinking about about all those model manufactures which are no more, as an example I am thinking of Sharman wheels, this in turn has lead me on to thinking there must be other small manufactures which we took for granted but are no more, one that comes to mind is Kings Cross models, now I only can recall having a few bits from them years ago but I wonder if there is a modern day equivalent and if so who would that be? So the question is this who do you recall as being a very useful supplier of bits you have needed and if there is a modern day equivalent who do you use? These can be locos, coach and wagon kits of brass, white metal or even plastic injection if you like, also any body that used to produce buildings in card or plastic and then you have all those detailing parts as well. Hopefully some of you will travel back down memory lane and think oh yes I wonder what happen to so and so's ranges of models and kits Regards Colin Rainsbury
  9. We have Expo-ng coming up 29th October http://expong.org/ so I expect Peco to be there, so we may find out when shipping will happen. Better get my money ready just in case Parkside Dundas has his order available at the show (I did pre-order three of them)
  10. Hi Andy, If you have the drawings Allen said he will produce them, thanks of the heads up with all the different manufactures, I had forgotten so many people where doing Irish rolling stock. All I need now is to confirm if anyone is producing what I would call the Irish broad gauge version of the Cavan and Letrim 4w wheel van. Colin
  11. Thanks Echo, who else make Irish railway coach kits, I think S S M do one or two but anyone else I don't have web address for thanks Colin
  12. Hi all One of the things that I like about the Irish railway scene is the use of 4 and 6 wheeled passenger stock, I have seen Colms idea of getting hold of some of those Thomas the tank based coaches and using the bodies as a fill up, but I was wondering if anyone else has used anything else to make a typical Irish 4/6wheeled coach in the past? Regards Colin R
  13. HI I have just been in contact with ABM Railcraft and I have been told he has now closed the business for good. I was just wondering if anyone has approached him about his art work for the various stations and buildings or has any other information about what was in the range, before he closed. Regards Colin Rainsbury
  14. Hi Guys I have got into this subject via a different route, but all the same I managed to get a copy of the book Building in Miniature from eBay for £25.00 and in fair to good condition. I have had an email from Peco about doing a reprint and they are fine about it as long as who ever wants to do it, they run it past them first to check for copyright material they may or may not hold. The one person who told me about George was the late Bob Barlow so I have him to thank for this. I also believe that there was also a book on scenic work by George? Does any one have the details of that one please? To be honest I think it would be better to combine as much of Georges work into one new volume, its not to make money but to get his work out to a whole audience what do you think? Regards Colin
  15. I got this from Keith Vingoe today whose knows a thing or two about the L&BR As far as I know the concrete sleepers are in store at Rowley Moor Farm. As to the locations where they were installed - I know of three definite. Woody Bay and Blackmoor Stations and a section between Pilton and BT. There could well have been others. A prime candidate would have been the cutting north of Bratton Fleming. Cheers Keith The likely hood would be places along the line where it was always wet and this part of North Devon does have a lot of wet days.
  16. I know from photos that the L&BR Trust have that some sleepers where installed just south of Blackmoor, I think it was more for a test than a wholesale relaying programme. I am not sure you can still get it but if you can try and obtain a copy of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Yesterday and Today ISBN 0-85361-537-3 this gives a lot of views over the line as it was and as it is now. .
  17. have you looked on the L&BR website yet? http://www.lynton-rail.co.uk/ or http://www.exmoor-associates.co.uk/ or http://www.762club.com/762home.php For what it is worth Bratton Fleming was built on a slope so you may want to think about how you are going to include that in the model is it to late to suggest to pushe the whole layout to the back of the boards a bit more? it will give you a bit more space for goods yard, just a suggestion Regards Colin
  18. Damian I will add to Mike Bellamy's invite to the 7mm NGA at Burton with a invite to Stafford. (But please no hanging trees to dry on the Saturday morning) No doubt I will see you at Swanley this year, it's been a few years since we all went down on the train. Not missed a Swanley for many a year. Bad thing is there is no bar any more ( pub up the road) Terry Hi Terry yes there is no bar at Swanley as such any more, but they do have cans available not Ideal but better than nothing. Regards Colin Rainsbury
  19. take a look here http://www.railway-books.co.uk/ I am just a satisfied customer drop him an email as he may be able to help Regards Colin Rainsbury
  20. Hi all for those of you who knew him the late Dave Brewer (Meridian Models) build a 4mm model of the Snailbeach loco shed and part of the site which was fantastic, I am not sure if he finished it, but the point was the engine shed was not square, I know this as Dave measured it up after he started to build his model and had to start all over again but he wanted it to be as accurate as possible, so if a building interests you go and have a look if you can, as this is one model that would have been wrong had it been based on photos only. Regards Colin
  21. I may be reading this wrongly but I think Phil is like a lot of modellers, in that we will never know for sure the exact colours used on WW1 locos, as we do know it depends on the undercoat /primer used in the first place and as paint at the time was not to the standards we have to day, you can only get close to the colours used at the time, I certainly wouldn't beat myself up about it. Thinking about it, it would have made sense if the then WD issued a colour specification. Regards Colin Rainsbury
  22. That will save some work, I guess I will be in the que to order one of the above at Expong Regards Colin
  23. Hi Sir Douglas I too was under the impression that i wouldn't need to model everything, but according to the two books I have just got by Bernard Rockett most of the above did work at the Port at some time Post 1940 -1955. The biggest problem as you can see, is that there is not at present a suitable Hunslet Quarry tank kit to modify in to what I need, I am told that the Chivers fineline one may be a bit too small, but I will get one at Expo-ng in a couple of weeks time to try it out anyhow. Some of the more well known locos will have to be scratch built, which is something I have not done a great deal of in 009. I do think, that just for now, I will only build those I can make from those kits which are available, the big problem is to wait for the chassis to be made, I will be having this conversation with one small manufactures in the coming weeks at Expo-ng in Swanley.
