  1. Is is due to the lack of air brakes on Mallard that would restrict the made up trains speed that is excluding it from traveling all the way to Germany via rail?
  2. The roof pannels look like they were when Metrovic built them, as single pieces, is that the case? Quite soon after they were built the roofs were cut into two and hinges fitted so they could be opened as access to the top of the engine was required a little more often than was originally invisaged!
  3. Theres a good bit of video of a 17 on the grain train in volume 3 of The Railways of Scotland series. This website is great for tracing old railways from the armchair. Click on the red C in a circle to get a 1940s map up. The OS maps dont work late at night because they are limited on the number of hits per day. wheres that path Jim
  4. I think its because Dapol do undercoated wagons? I'm not sure that Bachmann do....
  5. Came across this lovely little company purely by chance when looking for RTR PO wagons local to me. Basically the guy who runs it Robbie Burns makes various transfers, or he does RTR Dapol wagons in '00' or Peco 'N' guage made up with his transfers, and at £10 a throw, thats damn fine value if you ask me! I was a little worried that they might not be very good quality, but as you can see my worries were unfounded. I'm so impressed I thought I just had to share. So if your modeling pre WW2 layout, or just want some local wagons for display, then look no further, because he has a fantastic choice. Theres bound to be something local to you. Here 4 of 14 I ordered off him the other week. Very quick turn around too. ROBBIES ROLLING STOCK Cheers Jim
  6. Its a shame the Heljan wrapround version got canned. I might have be tempted if there was. The Heljan guys spent alot of time measuring up D5705 last summer, including taking pictures of grills etc, so I would be supprised if they have got grill detail wrong unless D5705 was modified somewhere down the line.
  7. Whilst we'er on about yellow ends...... Does anybody know why Hornby did the last production run of the BR blue liveried 21/29 hybrid thing with a semi full yellow end? I've never found photographic evidence of an all yellow nose with a blue cab.
  8. Theres a good colour picture of it here:- http://grahame910.fotopic.net/p62258813.html It was still with a small yellow panel on 1/11/1970, so it must have been repainted not long after that. I must say it does look particularly hideous with full yellows. Also of interest, note the bars across the door windows, I've only found evidence of D6103,6,7 having them. Does anybody know why D6108, one of the last conversions, was withdrawn so early? It ran for only a year after conversion as far as I can make out. IIRC I have a photo of it somewhere after it was withdrawn looking pretty spick and span. Jim
  9. IIRC Ken Joy who was behind the Class 21 project about 10-15 years ago bought a pair of 309 bogies and found an NBL-MAN L12V-21B engine, but couldn't get enough interest or donations to get the engine or to get the project to proceed. It was along time ago so apologies if my memory is playing tricks and I've got me facts wrong.
  10. IIRC they didn't sell out until the early 80's
  11. Cracking job there Chris, the only give away is the repeated windowns in the terraced houses. 10 out of 10!

    Dapol Class 22

Kernow need to update their website, I was just ordering a D6xx and looked in on a 22 to see this little statement on the delivery date Jim
  13. I spoke to the guys from Hattons and Heljan last saturday and they said it WAS having wrap rounds, so this is quite curious indeed....
  14. As promised, piccies of the inside of the windows where they have been modified. Jim
  15. I'll ask the guys who are measuring up on Saturday if they know about the window arrangment on the as built version, and maybe we'll know for sure then what will on the model. Jim
  16. I'll take a piccy of the inside on D5705s cab next weekend when we shunt it out for measuring up to show how the windows have been plated over. We did talk about reinstating the rap-rounds, but thats as far as it got. Looking at piccies they looked far more stylish with them. Jim
  17. There is a a form of contribution been made to us although I'm not at liberty to say exactly what it is. But rest assured that a small part of your sale will go to D5705s restoration. B)
  18. Would that be Liverpool St station? They always did that on their pilots. Its a shame their pet 15 didn't survive as it was kept in mint condition.
  19. Your bulb must be a bit brighter than mine....... I don't see how it actually switches power apart from to the frogs because of the insulating joints, or is that how its wired up for DCC? Jim
  20. wondering about track cleaning.....

  21. Has this problem only affected class 47s sofar?
  22. Diesel headcode disc displays say what type of train is been pulled, they don't give any other information. Check this site out for an explanation. clicky!
  23. Yes your right, there is a coolant filler on the top of the header tank imediately to the rear of the cooler group that has a pressure releaf valve built into it. In the early phase of their lives the cooler group had some very bad air traps in it that lead to often occuring overheating. Couldn't tell you about any others though. When BR modified the locos and fitted cast iron heads with different pistons they also fitted breathers which effectively stopped the overheating problems and actually turned them into very reliable locos. D8243 worked as a carridge heater unit for nearly 20 years with little or no maintenance. It was only withdrawn because some idiot ran it up after the winter of 1989 without filling it with coolant and buggered the engine. Jim
