  1. Does anyone know if There is a decent book on G&SWR carriages out there. I've tried joining the G&SWR association but so far they've not replied to my emails (Does anyone know if there's any problems there?) I've also tried eBay and putting in random combination of titles in Amazon to no avail Thanks Steve
  2. Morning troops I'm on the scrounge (I know.... again) Has anybody got a surplus GBL C class tender kicking around unwanted from a project that maybe used the loco and not the tender. I'm looking at a G&SWR Smellie design 2-4-0 as a future build project and the C class tender with a little work is a very close match to the tenders fitted to Smellie designed locos Thanks Steve
  3. Again this looks good too. At least both of them are a more realistic size. I only want to turn tank locos and the odd 0-6-0 not the flying Scotsman and its two tenders
  4. Ofcourse if you just want to add a bit of atmospheric fun for your home layout buy 2 or 3 counter top bells the type you see in hotels and line them up. If you get a couple of different makes they will all sound different but are very much like the bells found in signal boxes. A spare key hitting a muted bell will create the return key sound. You can clang away to your hearts content announcing your trains with different bells from fictional boxes either side of the one on your model railway.
  5. Now that looks ok about the right size and well proportioned so which one is this again?
  6. Space is really a premium and was hoping the 9 inch 20 cm would do 26 cm is pushing it just a tad to much but I'll have a play around with the space I have to see what can be done thanks
  7. Richard I've just been looking at the link you put on and was most impressed but I'm a little confused by the scale. Do you know if the term on30 definitely refers to OO (HO) 16.5mm scale? The 9 inch deck version would seem to suit my needs very well and the price is attractive as well.
  8. An old thread I know but in my mission to stockpile kits/locos (All unintentional) I think I might be on to another Jamison Jumbo if it comes off that will be four Jamison Jumbos and a Jamison Drummond class 66 4-4-0 in the to do stack. Both the class 66 and one of the Jumbos has had the bodies (well) built but not the chassis which look very much of there time so a better option for the Jumbos will be required I might be able to do something with the class 66 chassis
  9. After 8 miles in hob nail boots on cobbled roads....... We made it, the Brit contingent at Arnhem bridge. I'm at the back in the middle looking way to serious
  10. Hi Ade I was there on the 60th and many times before. I was there with a group called "VERA" (victory in Europe reenactment association) we worked closely with "1st Airborne recca" as well as "summer of 44" Good times and got to meet a lot of the old guys which was the best part of all. Here's a couple of photos one on Reenkam heath (not sure of the spelling but you'll know) The group's stood round one of our Jeeps on the glider landing ground. And the other picture is me in the March to the bridge just coming up to the junction in Oosterbec were we turn left towards Arnham by the Sckoonard hotel. In the jeep picture I'm behind the jeep in the middle of the photo.
  11. Pete I wish I had the answers as I'd very much like to go down this route, I think I asked a similar question and got the same response so let's keep out fingers crossed that someone in the know comes back with some information.
  12. I'm putting a bridge together and want to give it a "mesh" balastrade rather like the one in this picture. I thought of the Evergreens RSJ with the mesh web but it was both to wide apart and (I thought) was very expensive in my local model shop. The amount I'm needing would have cost me more than £60 plus without other materials. Has any one got a suggestion of an alternatives I'm looking for 120 cm length in strips of 10cm or cut off a sheet and about 1.5 to 2 cm deep
  13. I've got four Jumbos at the moment One is scratch built on a Hornby chassis with a Modified Triang Caley single tender the base for the smoke box cab and features like the dome all came from a Great Brittish locos Caley single body. It's one great fault is its still got the Hornby 18mmm wheels where it should have 20mm wheels. The second one My son got for me and I think might be a DJH white metal kit built on an Airfix tender drive 4F chassis. It actually works very well and at least it's got the correct 20mm driving wheels. The third and forth are both early brass Jameson kits one is unstarted still in its box the other one someone has built the body and tender. There is a chassis with both but the power source is still undecided. Maybe romford 20mm wheels on a Hornby chassis we shall see. The 812 class falls just out side my time scale so it's not on the high priority build list but let's see what the future holds as like Richard I tend to build to a fairly flexible time zone with locos from 1880 to about 1905.
  14. Join the club my friend, I've built some beautiful layouts in my mind but mostly that's as far as it gets. I had to sit down a couple of years ago and have a serious think about what I wanted and what was unachievable. I'm pretty sure where I'm going and am now at the material gathering stage but trust me your not alone I'm only at this stage after years of indecision.
  15. I love that quarry scene it fits in that corner so we'll but then the whole layout looks superb. Steve
  16. Ian there absolutely beautiful. You've captured that cab roof profile brilliantly. Thanks for posting I've got to admit I've got a Brittains 0-4-2 670 class (almost the same) on my want to build list and have already started gathering materials for and cut some parts like the tender frame etc so was keen to see what progress you had made
  17. Any progress on the Conner 0-4-2 Ian, I'd love to see some photos regardless of how far you've got. Steve
  18. Can any one point me in the right direction, I'm trying to find a layout that's been on here in the past. I believe it started life as a 7mm scale test track that has had detail and scenary added to make it look like the WCML in steam days. It was built as a shelf and was only a few inches wide. A long spell in hospital means I've lost any references i might have had to it Thanks all Steve
  19. He does state 4mm scale in his original post.
  20. Nice to see some proper modeling Caley 439 and am following with interest. I'm afraid poor health and some long spells in hospital have restricted my practical modeling at the moment but when my health improves I have several projects I would like to explore and reading your posts is helping to keep my interest stimulated. Carry on the good work Steve
  21. I'd probably need to needle file a small flat so the mini drill has a chance other wise as yo say the drill will."dance" all over the place and most likely snap.
  22. Thanks chaps I feared as much looks like I'm drilling some very fine holes. I'll need to do it to some more "long" hand rail knobs later for a roof top luggage fack on an 1860/70 carriage which is in the to do list
  23. Does any body make a 4mm scale hand rail knob that changes direction by 45 degrees rather than being straight through. I'm working on an 1870s tender that has a hand rail that changes from a parralel to horizontal on each side of the tank as can be seen in this picture Steve
