  1. That would work with it being tender drive you've got a lot more Lee way with lining up everything and getting the rods to run freely than if it was loco driven yes I think that would work very well. One question. Just remind me even though it's tender driven does the loco have any flangless wheel?
  2. I don't see why not, I seem to recall the motor sitting quite well back on the Triang chassis which shouldn't be to much of a problem as the cab and bunker will hide that nicely.

Way back in the day on a regular Saturday visit to Gee Dee's in Nottingham to see what they had in there used to be Sat in there second hand display cabinet a loco I used to admire (drool over) and almost brought it was an 0-10-0 Licky banker made from two Airfix 4F bodies spliced together with one cab being used on the loco with the other grafted onto the tender for 0'10-0s distinctive tender cab. The 9F chassis was still free wheeling the whole loco being driven by one of the 4F tenders all though probably not very close to scale it still looked right with the only obvious visual fault I could see being the 9F standard single slide bar as opposed to the Midland double top and bottom slide bars. But alas I vasalated for to long (A bad fault of mine) and then one day I went in and it was gone. I've often thought over the years of doing one my self and this time giving it the correct slide bars. Maybe one day!

I would say from 1900 to the 1960s or early 1970s the basic infrastructure would have remained unchanged but there seems to have been a rolling program of rationalisation from the 1980s untill now and not directly end of steam and Dr Beaching related. My period should have been the 1970s blue diesel era but looking now 40 years on its changed beyond all recognition from that period with working practices and advances in technology like signalling which had remained on the whole intact untill the 1980s and track changed due to traffic demands. I would think if you change small details like vehicle ect. You could possibly get away with a period from 1900 to 1960s or even 1970s as things like turn tables and engine sheds were often still there but used for storing condemned stock like wood wagons etc. May be that carriage siding that was full of beautiful old carriage stock in 1900 could be a reception siding for a scrap merchant with some old locos lined up ready for or even being cut up in the late 1960s early 1970s Hope that gives you something to think about.
  5. I use Mc Donalds style wooden coffee stirers (other makes are available) and I and the relatives "grab a hand full each time we go. I stick half a dozen each to different grades of sand paper usually about 10mm at both ends and cut them out with a scalpel when the glues set, I also have a pencil that's never had a point cut on it and I glue a mini disc of sanding paper to this as well trimming this with a scalpel, this you can "roll" between your fingers to get a sanding action.

  10. Just put in Triang buffers on ebay and the first ones to come up were these which are the most common loco and carriage buffers fitted to Triang locos of that time. 392908380054

  13. Andy just stand in the corner and be quite unless you spoken too. Bloody young today just have no manners or disaplin. I would say that is definitely a River kit judging by the step up over the cylinders, I would say the only Caley loco to come close would be a class 60 but the step is way to big for that. As Andy will tell you I was pretty much welded to the Caledonian but of late I've been temted by the dark (green) side and with some swaps and eBay purchases plus a couple of very lucky gift acquisitions I'm now building up quite a pile of Highland kits to look at along side the Caley stock I have to do. The eventual aim is a Caley based layout to which the Highland have running rights. It's all Andy's fault!
  14. Oh don't worry I'll still be Caledonian and the layout will be a frictional Caley based line with the Highland having running rights.
  15. As most of you know I was firmly welded to the Caledonian but a couple of lucky acquisition plus encouragement from Any (uax6) and doing some swaps with him I'm now getting quite a collection of Highland locos to build. So the bugs bit me and ive caught the disease

  17. Thank you Compound2632 for the PM with the drawing and additional information which has given us more than enough to take it further.

The actual loco were interested in is this one Number 4 which was tested on the former Highland railway at Inverness in 1928 As 158A was number 2 and as this is number 4 one would presume that they are of the same class of 6ft 2 1/2inch Kirtley 2-4-0 This image supposedly taken while at Inverness, can any one also confirm the tender type.   19. Thanks chaps I'm beginning to build a picture here of what if l take it forward will be the direction to go. As l said it will be a joint project with Andy (uax6) so the first thing we will need is a good line drawing, A GA drawing might be to complex for our needs in OO but at the moment anything that has the main basic dimensions, something like a photo copy from a book or something like that please if any one can help.   20. I believe evrn 158A the 2-4-0 at the Midland Railway center made it to the early 1950s as the station pilot at Nottingham station before being preserved.
  21. Hello Richard no sorry as it says thats the Johnson (passenger) loco, Ratio also made a 4-4-0 as well I believe. We're interested in the Kirtley (freight) loco. Don't all jump on me here I'm just generalizing if I refers to them as passenger of freight.

Discussing with fellow member Andy (uax6) we were wondering if anyone has a line drawing for this loco with the basic dimensions or know where we could find one for the Midland Kirtley out side framed 6ft 2 1/2 inch wheel 2-4-0 like the one preserved at the Midland Railway center.
