  2. just a heads up on facebook there is someone claiming to be from Love productions [the people who make great British bake-off] posting in model railway groups wanting to enlist modellers in a project to build the worlds biggest model railway for TV, it makes no sense so you'll most likely spot it, no idea what their end goal is

Sounds like a great idea, James May's line was not exactly a model railway. What is needed is a a hall at the NEC and lots of modular layuts US style made to standard templates with some protocab Radio Control locos to get round the power supple DCC/DC problems and allow through running. Probably need to do it in the USA.

I've always thought the Cardington hangers would be a fine space for a layout. At about 800' long, you could (at 4mm scale) have a scale 11 mile run before you have to go round any corners.

  3. ok slightly mythed as to why not that many people are interested in my N gauge layout and aren't giving me any suggestion/advice

Don't be miffed. Make it easy for us. Try adding a couple of photos or links to the thread to get people interested. Also, some of us have signatures turned off so won't have seen any links there.

      Adamphillip

thanks I'm using a modified track plan from a magazine that suggests a 1 in 42 for a 4 inch rise but i need 6 inches

    3. yorkie_pudd

      yorkie_pudd

Another simple way to see the gradient in 3D, is use a length of spare wood at the angle you tend to use. example - piece of 2x1 6` long raised 2" at one end would show a 2.8% gradient.

    4. Ozexpatriate

      Ozexpatriate

Steam or diesel? Train of bogie stock or four-wheelers? Any curves in your rise? I'd say 1:32 is hit or miss depending on what you will run.

  14. right so I want to use couplers instead of the coupling bars on Bachmann mk1's and 2's what will keep the close spacing?

    1. Show previous comments  2 more
    2. Adamphillip

      Adamphillip

ahh i see, it's only to get the consist coupled tightly between coaches, not too fussed for between coaches and locos so that's staying as a hook and bar type

    3. Adamphillip

      Adamphillip

is there any fleischmann couplers the correct length?

    4. Matt

      Matt

If I recall correctly the socket is slightly too high. You should be ok coupling within rakes with kadees if you don't plan on trying to connect to anything else I.e. Retaining coupling bars on outer ends of rakes. I also think I recall that the problem on the mk1 depends on the bogies fitted. You might find that 1 type is actually the right height but I couldn't remember for sure. For what it's worth I found most of my mk1s and 2s coupled ok to other stock despite the slight hei...

      jjb1970

As Patrick says, it makes perfect sense in Germany and a number of other markets where three rail AC is still popular, but in the UK it'd be answering a question that nobody has asked and just add cost for no real benefit to the overwhelming (and I mean overwhelming) number of users.
