  1. Hello, In an earlier post Chris mentions the 'special' deal available for nameplates from Narrow Planet (see the Minerva pamphlet enclosed with your loco) but can anybody advise which style / size of nameplates best authentically suit this small loco, please ? The reason that I ask is that I normally use "OO" gauge nameplates for my Industrial 7mm locos which look fine on the Ixion Hudswell Clarkes, etc, but when I offered up a "OO" A4 "Peregrine" nameplate to my MW yesterday but it looked ridiculously large, particularly when compared with a photo of Sharpthorn as printed in a recent magazine. I have some 3mm scale nameplates which are better but still don't look right. I am guessing that the Industrial, Isaac or Dudley style of nameplates from the range would probably suit but in what scale would it be best to order them ? I'm thinking of a similar length of name to Peregrine. Afraid I haven't used Narrow Planet plates before. Regards, Ian.
  2. Wife's just got me a copy from Smith's in the White Rose outside Leeds, wasn't available at either the Station or City Centre shops. Sat with a cup of tea and my reading specs on !
  3. Managed to prise mine out of the hands of the Royal Mail just before the sorting office closed at 8pm. Haven't had chance to give it a run yet (I'm afraid there's a lot more than leafs on my line at the moment !) Will take it down to the Leeds MR Club for tonight's talk, where I suspect it may meet a couple of siblings. I have to say how impressed I am, I don't think that the photos quite bring home how fine the detail is, the coupling rods particularly impressed me. I was beginning to think that I had made a mistake by ordering a Blue one instead of the Red one, was worrying about the lining, but have to say it looks much better in the flesh, so, more than happy with my choice now ....except, now I'll have to save up for a Red one aswell ! Many thanks to Chris and his team for bringing us this "Thing of Beauty." Regards, Ian.
  4. Which one is mine ?? Regards, Excited from Leeds.

    E&WYUR

Having now read the section in Don Townsley's Hunslet book properley (and not just looked at the pretty pictures as I did last night) I've probably answered my own question. No.4000 (0-8-0) ran trials for 4 weeks in 1951 with heavy coal train shunting at Stourton Down Yard before 5 weeks of tests with freight trains between Stourton, Guiseley and Yeadon accompanied by the Dynamometer car. 11001 worked briefly at Stourton Yard in 1952 and then sometime after the Hunslet stock loco No.4003 (0-6-0) was tested there before moving to the Walkden system and returning to be painted in Leeds in 1954 (it then worked at a Shotton steelworks into the 1970's.) Alas no mention of any of the 3 straying up the E&WYUR. Regards, Ian.

Yes, I wondered that myself having retrieved my copy of the Hunslet book from the loft last night; it seemed coincidental that the 500hp Davy Paxman engine fitted to the roving Peruvian No.4000 in 1951 is the same as the captions regarding 11001 circa 1952 and No.s 4002 and 4003 were 0-6-0's. Although if Hunslet had experience with these engines could that not be the reason for 11001's visit to the Stourton area ? No worries about the kit, I've got plenty of others to be going on with but if you do ever re-etch the etchings, I'll have a 3mm set, please. It's a bit of an ugly duckling really isn't it, which makes it quite appealing ! LoL. I don't suppose anybody knows if any of the Peruvian locos were ever tested up the E&WYUR do they ? Now that would be interesting, especially if they were hauling the NE Dynamometer car as the picture of No.4000 going through my local station of Guiseley shows. Still enjoying the hunt. Regards, Ian.

Hello Michael, I'm afraid I'm only quoting from a caption in Bellcodes Railway Memories No.22 - Return to Leeds p.18, so am reliant on the authors being in the know (the same comment appears in RM No.25, p.7, different picture and different authors but same Publisher.) I don't know if anything relating to this appears in the Hunslet Engine Works book, I may get chance to look tomorrow. As you say, both photos are of it in Stourton yard, it's only my wishful thinking that suggests that maybe it was trialled up the inclines of the E&WYUR. Unfortunately some of the sources that I'm gathering information from are likely only quoting from one of the other sources as the comments are very similar which is why I would prefer to find photographs of the locos actually on the E&WYUR. You'll probably hear Smithy and I discussing it at the club tomorrow as he's bringing a book down with information relating to a 13t brake van used on the line, if you're down, any comments will be gratefully received. I don't suppose that you shrank your kit of 11001 down to 3mm did you ? Regards, Ian.

Thanks Paul, I'd picked up on this earlier but haven't so far come across any potential pictures of this other than the Bulleid SR 0-6-0 shunter / transfer loco 11001 in Stourton sidings on trial after repairs at Hunslet which I can well imagine included runs up the E&WYUR. I'm currently compiling a list of locos for which there are photos of or strong references towards them working on the lines, the RCTS LNER books are throwing up quite a few interesting designs. When I've finished with them I'll re consult my copies of the Hunslet Engine works, Manning Wardle locos and Hudswell Clarke deisel era books and see what I can find. Haven't found any hard evidence of anything bigger than J6's on the lines at the moment and still no references of my favourites the J50's which surprises me with their strong Ardsley connections ....surely they must have put in an appearance at some point ? Anyway, I'm enjoying the hunt. Regards, Ian.
  9. False alarm, problem sorted ....somehow I'd managed to activate the 'ignore this topic' option on the first post ! (I hate touch screens) ....anyway, seems Ok now although this didn't show up when I checked my followed topics in the Settings section. Regards, Ian.
  10. Andy, Sorry if this has already come up ...but.... I started a new topic on the E&WYUR in the Disused Lines section the other day but now find that this is invisible to me if I log in ! So long as I'm logged out I can view and search for the topic ?? If I'm on the main Disused lines topics page (logged out) then the topic is in the list but as soon as I log in it disappears, log out again and it reappears. The only way that I can reply to posts that people have left me is to access the actual page when logged out and then log in, the page then remains visible and I can use the posting box as normal. The topic does not appear in My Activity area either even though I am a follower, all other items that I follow work as I would expect. Have I missed something out when I created the topic as it think that this is probably the first one that I've ever started ? Regards, Ian.

    E&WYUR

With respect to my reference to the locos suggested as 'potential candidates' by Paul Lunn I don't doubt him in the fact that these locos were seen in the immeadiate area around the E&WYUR, I'm just seeking confirmation as to whether or not they ventured further up the line than the exchange sidings at Stourton.

Thanks for the speedy replies Sir Douglas and Compound, I was aware of the LNER Encyclopedia pages but hadn't seen the wagon page before; I hadn't come across the pages that you linked either, Sir Douglas, although I have seen the image of Edith before but that link is a clearer image than the printed one I'd seen. Thanks again for the replies, time to print out some of this info and make myself a little file up I think. Reards, Ian.

    E&WYUR

During the last 18 months or so I have become aware and interested in the now defunct East & West Yorkshire Union Railway and associated lines running between Stourton, Leeds and Lofthouse Junction near Wakefield. I have gathered some information relating to the line including the D.L. Franks book by Plateway but am surprised that I can't find any related threads on this source, so I've started one. My opening questions relate to motive power seen on the line. I have seen photos of the main suspects seen at work ie J52, J94, J84, J85, N19 and the industrial locos mentioned in Mr. Franks' book aswell as excursion visitors such as J6's and was it Ivatt 2-6-2T's or a 2-6-4T to Rothwell station but have also read that J67's and J69's worked on the line between 1935 and 1944 (RCTS part 8A) but have seen no photographic evidence of this. A photograph of 02 2-8-0 63973 reversing onto Stourton shed in Bellcodes' Railway Memories No22 poses the authors speculative question did it arrive via the E&WYUR which begs the question ....would this have been either likely or possible ? Paul Lunn also offers into the mix as 'legitimate possibles' J50's, J39's, L1's, 3F 0-6-0's, LMS 4-4-0's, Ivatt 2-6-0's and BR Standard 2-6-4T's in his article Model Rail's bookazine Ideas for Layouts vol.4 but again I've not come across any photographic evidence as of yet. Can anybody clarify any of these other potential candidates and give indication as to what or why they were or undoubtably couldn't be seen on the line, ie weight restrictions? Would the line have been used for any light engine movements for instance ? Regards, Ian.
  14. Thanks Phil and Bill, I've dug out my copies of Essery's Midland and LMS wagon books to reread the sections regarding these 'similar' styled brake vans. There is a historical photo of the van that I modelled a while ago in LMS livery, No.747, from which I can see that I need to add full length rainstrips ....and vacuum pipes ! I'm sure that I must have looked at this photo before whilst making the kit but then used a colour photo of the van in preservation from a magazine as it was easier to view on the workbench, this is why I've not put on rainstrips as they are not now present and the vac pipes are connected with other vehicles either side of it, so are not particularly obvious. As a matter of interest there are at least 3 different versions of these vans represented in Ron Toop's photos from the 1950's. Regards, Ian.
  15. Yes, thanks Phil, that's the same style as the OPC drawing except for the rain strips which is one continuous one on their drawing but hey ho, incidentally that's just made me realise that I haven't put any on my LMS van ! I actually have another 2 kits available to build so I shall do one in SDJR livery and one in BR grey (although this may be a 'ducketed' version. The other photos that I came across were in the Ron Toop album. You've now given me a link to another set of photos to pour over, much appreciated. Cheers, Ian.
  16. Stand down everybody ....in a moment of inspiration it seems that I've managed to answer my own question or as good as I'm possibly likely to get by looking in OPC Southern Wagons Pictorial. P.79 has an arrangement drawing of these 3 vans with a suggestion of their 'possible' livery and makes the statement 'No photographs of them in SDJR service are known .....' I can live with this information but if anybody else can add to this I would be very grateful as I haven't yet started the kit, although I've already built an LMS livered version. Of interest, whilst looking through some of the other threads in this section, I've found a couple of photos of potentially 2 of these vans running on the line in BR days, although the running numbers are not visible. Cheers, Ian.
  17. I realise that this is an old thread but does anyone know of any photos of the dia1659 brake vans that the S&DJR bought in 1925 or what their livery would have been around this time, please ? Regards, Ian.
  18. Postman came earlier than usual so not quite 3hrs of sleep ....but a whole afternoon pouring over this edition; great photos, interesting and informative information, great snippets of what was on shed at various points in time and a plethora of trackplans ....overall excellent product (in my opinion) and brought back some wonderful memories. As mentioned I also like to support the high street shops, particularly WH Smiths, but I will probably just go straight to the publishers for the remaining editions unless I happen to be passing the White Rose or am in town, if only to save on petrol (20 mile round trip)....well, this is Yorkshire !
  19. Thanks for the 2 photos Brit15. The lower of the 2 is definately from my era and I would suspect that 08 503 is probably one of the shunter trio on the left with the light grey roofs and red, numbered buffer beams.....which will be the subject modelled when the later bodied version in 'O' gauge comes out from Dapol for me. I remember a good few tentative walks down a rather dodgy looking Sweet St. West to climb that wall, never had any bother down there ...but you never quite knew, especially with the travellers camped just through the other side under the rail bridge. It might be a good time for me to go through my old slides and see what I actually took in those days. Just need the Postman to come now tomorrow aft, just in time for me getting up, which will cheer me up after F, S, S nights ! Thanks for the memories. Ian.
  20. I've looked in WH Smith's at the 'White Rose' centre, Leeds, where I bought the last edition but no sign of it, nor in the York store so I've also ordered direct from the publisher, quick, simple, no extra postage charge and should arrive in a few days time. You could waste a lot of time and petrol hunting it down ....and I hate shopping centres with a passion. Looking forward to reading about my local shed, Holbeck and hopefully Bradford's Hammerton St. ....photos of 08 503 and 03 060 would be the icing on the cake for me, personally !
  21. Hello 18B, I tried to get Vol.3 in Leeds City centre at both the station and the main store, tried twice with a weeks gap but none on show. Finally got my copy at the WH Smiths at the White Rose shopping centre (Vol.2 was also still availble there) .....will be heading straight there when Vol.4 comes out in Nov. Very nice publication in my opinion.
  22. Siimon, Why does this area seem so much bigger on the photos and maps than my memory serves up ? I always seemed to think that the pigeon lofts were fairly close to the 2 sidings entrance and backed onto a retaining wall ....but I coulld be totally wrong ! I grew up close to New Pudsey station and travelled the line to Leeds on a daily basis back in the mid to late 80's and always looked out for this area as we passed. I still pass through this area fairly often, maybe it's time I stopped and had another look around .....there's even an outside chance that I've done a bit of a photographic study of the area (which I've forgotten about) with a layout in mind ...unfortunately I have boxes and boxes of slides taken from this period into the 90's ...I'll see if I can get time to look through them, but don't hold your breath !! Regards, Ian.
  23. Hi Simon, I did find a webphoto last night of the Fina station on the Leodis website, Armley section, picture 1808 (sorry haven't worked out how to link this yet) although realistically I would suspect that this would be beyond the range of your layout area. The Old Ordanance Survey Map - Wortley & Old Farnley 1906 (Yorkshire sheet 217.08) does show the full extent of the sidings in the Carr Croft area on which I think the allotments then became, just leaving the 2 that you refer to. Regards, Ian.
  24. Hi SGJ, Afraid that my Dad didn't have much to offer, apperently he and my Grandad had fallen out by then so he never went to these pigeon lofts but between him and my Auntie and several pints I did gleen that the entrance to Railway Sidings Allotments was a narrow road between 2 buildings adjacent to a Fina filling staion (not through the underpass I visualised, which I think is visible in your 1940's photo) and there was another exit by Walkers bakery. My Grandad's lofts were there from 1967 to at least 1977 when he built some new ones in his new backgarden in Rodley when he remarried ....unfortunately we think that his new wife destroyed any possible photos ! I was wrong about the guard dog also, in that she was called Tara ....apparently there was a goat tethered up in one of the allotments, Tara managed to get at it one day and killed it, Grandad buried it before the owner found out about it ....who then assumed that it had just escaped !!! Tara had to be chained up from then on ....with which she managed to hang herself from the fence ....now I'd like to see you explain all that in a diorama ! LoL.
  25. Only just seen this thread whilst investigating the possibilities for an N-gauge micro layout inspired by Neil Ripley's Carlton Metals layout which always reminded me of the area in Armley that you are modelling. A possible scenic interest for you might be the pigeon lofts that my Grandad (Dennis Evans) had just near the yard entrance back in the early 70's. As I was only 4 or 5 at the time my memories are purely hazy imagery ....but those images are of a run down, overgrown area, access gained between 2 buildings (possibly from under a 'bridged' gateway) from Whingate Junction, my Dad's Alsation guard dog (Dusty) on duty, Grandad's blue Ford Cortina Mk1, coal sidings and 16Tonners. Neil's bakery building on Carlton Metals that triggered these memories must be the Blakey's factory and the high retaining walls and road overbridges are self explanatory from your pictures. I'm seeing my Dad this W/end so I'll see if I can gather any more info, he may even have some photos as he was always interested in railways.
