  3. Morning All, The wind seems to have calmed down at last - to be replaced with snow according to the radio. However, the the snow is confined to the higher ground. Down here the temperature is up at around 4°C. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  4. Morning All, Thankfully, the wind is now calming down a bit - although it is still pretty blowy out! Yes - I think you are right Phil. The original report from The Independent (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/storm-ciara-hastings-surfer-missing-rescue-lifeboat-rnli-video-a9325986.html) had him coming ashore at Pett Level - which wouldn't be too bad. It's a nice flattish shingle beach - but anything west of that (Hastings to Cliff End) would be substantially more difficult due to the cliffs. There are a few isolated coves at the bottom of the Glens - but nothing that would be very easy to spot. My Mum told me that they said Rye on the local news - so it appears that the orignal report was probably incorrect! Have a good day everyone...
  5. Morning All, Early reports seem to indicate that we have weathered storm Sabine fairly well. (Ciara changed her name when she reached Germany!) The journey into work was also easier than expected. We only saw one fallen tree, but that was on a side road so didn't present a problem. There was a very interesting film doing the rounds on Twitter yesterday - apparently the Hastings Lifeboat got called out to rescue (would you believe it?) a surfer. For those that know the area, he was surfing at Rock-a-Nore and was initially declared missing, but was able to swim ashore on his own at Pett Level. (That's about seven miles along the coast)! It should be possible to view this link without logging in: https://twitter.com/Lee_k100/status/1226575269705789440 I hope the Surfer concerned sees fit to make a sizeable donation to the RNLI! Have a good day everyone...
  6. Morning All, We have a temperature of around -2°C and quite a heavy frost today. I also have rather a lot to be getting on with, so I had better make a start! Have a good day everyone...
  7. Morning All, We have around 4°C this morning. Colder than it was earlier in the week, but not really seasonal. Snow was forecast for the higher ground today, but somehow I doubt it! Time for a coffee. Have a good day everyone...
  8. Morning All, It's a somewhat colder morning in this part of the world. Can't say I'm that unhappy about it though - the temperatures have been ridiculous for February. Welcome to Lantavian, I don't recollect seeing you around here before. Time for a coffee. Have a good day everyone...
  9. Morning All, It's funny weather at the moment. Far too mild for the time of year. We even had a thunderstorm on Saturday evening. There isn't a lot else to report, so have a good day everyone...
  10. Morning All, It's a very strange morning weather wise. The temperature is right up at 12°C and there is a curious warm wind blowing. Very odd. Best wishes to your Dad, Q. Have a good day everyone...
  11. Morning All, We have an overcast, but mild morning today. I am slightly later on parade as I took the car in for service first. Have a good day everyone...
  12. Morning All, We have a fairly mild morning today, and the run into work was a lot smoother! Time for a coffee. Have a good day everyone...
  13. Morning All, It's a foggy morning, and the temperature is hovering just around freezing. I am slightly later on parade this morning due to an accident closing the road on my way to work. So I guess I had better get on! Have a good day everyone...
  14. Morning All, The temperature is hovering just above freezing today. Hopefully we will see some sun later. Which is also the reason why there were so many Mini vans around at that time. Vans were classed as commercial vehicles which were free of purchase tax. Have a good day everyone...
  15. Actually, it's a pretty good idea to be honest. The turbine really wouldn't need to be all that big - probably not a lot bigger than a large model aircraft turbine and with the correct soundproofing it would also be pretty quiet. I've long thought that electricity is the way to go - we just need a cheap, sustainable, safe and efficient way of generating it! Electricity is fantastic because it can be used to do practically anything - provide traction, heat or light. Of course, even an internal combustion engine is much more efficient at a constant speed. Even going back to the time of the Hillman Imp with its Coventry Climax engine. That had been designed as a fire pump engine. Therefore, it could be wheeled out, started, and run on full throttle for hours without problems. The problems only came in if you treated the engine with kid gloves! It was always considered to be the one engine that you should never try to run in. By the way, on the subject of Gas Turbines. Does anyone remember those trains that used to run from Boulogne Maritime down to Paris via Amiens? They had gas turbines, and boy were they loud! Not as loud as the Hovercraft, admittedly, but few things were!

  17. Morning All, It's a somewhat milder morning today. The temperature is around freezing and there is a light drizzle falling - but the roads didn't appear to be too icy. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  18. Morning All, It's a very chilly morning today. The temperature was down to -6°C on the way to work - plus, there's a heavy frost Oh, I don't know! I lived and worked in Basildon for a while and it actually wasn't too bad. It also had a pretty impressive shopping centre (The Eastgate) compared to what we had in Hastings. I expect that it's all gone now - but there was also a bowling centre above the outside part of the shopping centre which was reached by an escalator from the lower level. I used to go bowling with colleagues from midnight to 3am because you could book a lane for three hours for the price of three games during the day! Oh well - after that bit of nostalgia from the 90s, I think it's time for a coffee. Best wishes to Tony. Have a good day everyone...
  19. Morning All, There has been quite a significant temperature drop overnight. It's down to -4°C this morning. It looks like today is going to be a rather busy one - so I guess I had better get on! Have a good day everyone...
  20. Morning All, It's a chilly morning today. Around -2°C with a light frost. The weekend was quiet. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  21. Morning All, It is slightly chillier this morning. The temperature down to -1°C and there is a bit of a frost. There isn't a lot else to report, so have a good day everyone...
  22. Morning All, We have another relatively mild morning. There is apparently ice in the higher regions north of here, but we have a balmy (for January) 10°C. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  23. Morning All, First of all, best wishes to Sherry. We have another rather mild morning. It is due to rain later on, but is currently dry. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  24. That's very true. What really needs to be done is Europe wide investment to develop a unified energy policy which is safe, efficient and sustainable. However, I suspect that the political will to do that isn't there. All the time that we can muddle along in some way, shape or form everything will continue as usual. It is true that a lot of France's energy is generated by nuclear, but of more concern (to me) are the two reactors in Belgium (Doel and Tihange). Both reactors have micro cracks in their pressure vessels, but Belgium is dependent on the stations for 40% of its energy needs. If anything were to happen there, it would become everyone's problem alarmingly quickly.
  25. Morning All, It is still very dark in this part of the world - but fairly mild (6°C). There is a bit of a biting wind though. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
