Morning All, I am back in the office this morning after a short autumn break. We didn't do very much - it was a quiet few days, and then I was motivated to do a job that I have been putting off for some time and installed a new water pump in the cellar. The weather is fairly autumnal this morning, but was an unseasonable 26°C yesterday afternoon. Thoughts are with John and Sandy. Have a good day everyone...

Morning All, We are currently experiencing very wild weather! There were high winds and lashing rain overnight, and although it seems that the worst of the storm has now passed, it is very blustery. Yesterday evening seemed chilly, so I lit the wood burner for the first time this season. Half an hour later, we had the window open! Typical Autumn weather, I guess. Time for a coffee. Morning All, It is a fairly mild and dry morning today. Looks like it may well be a reasonable day. Very definitely! Whenever I have hired a narrowboat, it has always been one of the things that is considered necessary. It doesn't cost much either. Unfortunately, there seems to be an increase in these sort of events and I can see the "authorities" insisting on some form of training in the years to come. I presume it is the same on the broads, but it is possible to hire a narrowboat and take it out with little or no training. That isn't a problem for most people - but there seems to be an increasing number who apparently have no common sense at all. Checking to make sure that you have enough draft, can get under all the bridges and in all of the locks on the waterway you wish to navigate is one of the first rules of boating. Morning All, It is absolutely throwing it down this morning! Not that we don't need the rain. However, it made for an unpleasant drive to work. Fortunately, I managed to get the lawn mowed over the weekend. Although that turned out to be a longer job than I expected. Earlier in the year, I bought a new mower because my previous one was on its last legs. On Saturday, it started fine but as soon as any load was placed on the engine, it cut out. The grass wasn't that long, but everytime the engine stalled. Having stripped down the engine, I discovered (believe it or not) that the carburettor on these new Briggs and Stratton engines is made of plastic! Fortunately, stripping everything is reasonably easy and I discovered that the main jet was very slightly fouled. Having cleaned it, and reassembled everything the problem was solved. Reading up on the Internet subsequently, it appears this is a common problem because the main jet is so small (almost half the size of the main jets on typical small engines). In order to keep emissions down, they run these engines as lean as they can get away with. Oh well - time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...

Morning All, It is a rather chilly morning in this part of the world. However, there isn't much cloud, so it will probably warm up a certain amount later. Not sure about that to be honest. I think many politicians have been given an easy ride by him of late. Particularly when they share his opinions. Although it is fair to say that he has been present for a very long time, and I will always have fond memories for the today programme. My Mum listened to it every morning. Morning All, A sure sign that Autumn is approaching, is the fact that we only have twilight at the moment! Having said that, the weather appears reasonable if somewhat cloudy. Neither do I, and I guess that is the problem - nobody really does! I drive a Ford Focus with the 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine and I get 57mpg constantly. I don't do enough mileage to justify diesel (the fuel is cheaper in Germany, but tax is much higher) War is being waged against Diesel vehicles at the moment and there are plans afoot to ban diesel cars from many towns. Having said that, electric cars are not the alternative. They might be fine for pottering to and from work - but long journeys are a major inconvenience - the individual countries can't even decide on a common plug and there is no universal payment system. That is before we get to the issues of electricity supply and the materials required to manufacture the batteries. It's all very well to say we need to replace the internal combustion engine - but there has to be something viable to replace it with. Anything that is good for the environment needs to be implemented, but it really should be to improve the environment. The cynical side of me can't help but think that many of the environmental issues at a political level are just a way of making more money. Have a good day everyone...

Morning All, We have a fairly mild morning today. Autumn seems to have disappeared for the moment. Yesterday, we had the plumber round to sort out our gas main. We had a type of valve on the gas meter inlet which is no longer allowed and so when the boiler was inspected we were told it would have to be changed. We were advised to change the entire length of pipe from the stop cock to the meter at the same time. Expensive, but at least it is done and fulfils the latest safety standards. Time for a coffee! Morning All, A definite cool down has taken place. According to the weather experts, we have seen the last of the 30°C weather for this year. We had 10°C on the way to work this morning! The weekend rushed past rather quickly. Most of Saturday was spent sorting out our coat and shoe cupbord in the hall. It is a walk in cupboard which has been used in a "throw it in, and close the door" way for a while now. It was high time we sorted things out - but of course the job was more involved than we expected. Having said that, the time was well invested because it look a lot better now.
