  1. Probably Sellafield. Which itself will be a huge problem for future generations. I believe building 30 (better known as "dirty 30") is the most polluted industrial site in Western Europe, and they still haven't got a clue what to do about it.
  2. I used to live near to Dungeness Power Station - That isn't exactly an oil painting either. Personally, I'd rather have wind turbines.
  3. Morning All, It is a reasonably mild morning in this part of the world. Yes (enough said) I know that Germany gets slated for its energy policy, but the long and short of it is that you can't please all of the people all of the time. Wind and Solar are both excellent sources of renewable energy but the question remains what to do when there is too much being generated (current we sink to Romania) and when there is too little (the Lignite stations fill in the gaps). In my humble opinion, Nuclear is a mistake, if something goes wrong (which it can) the price is too high, but long term coal isn't an option either. I suspect that this is a problem that will haunt us for many years to come. After all, everyone wants the lights to remain on. Have a good day everyone...
  4. Morning All, It is a relatively mild morning in this part of the world. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  5. Morning All, It is a relatively mild, but wet morning in this part of the world. We don't have smart meters yet. At the moment, they are very rare in Germany. Despite being "required" there hasn't (until very recently) been a smart meter that fulfills the standards set down for data protection. Even when they eventually become more widespread they will only be required in houses that use more than 6000kwh a year (about double our usage!) At some point in the future, that may change - but for the moment we have the good old fashioned analogue meters. Have a good day everyone...
  6. Morning All, It's a chilly, but dry morning in this part of the world. It also appears to be particularly dark! Here's to spring, and lighter mornings. Time for a coffee. Have a good day everyone...
  7. Morning All, It isn't quite as cold as it was yesterday morning, but we had rain overnight. There isn't a lot else to report, so have a good day everyone...
  8. I am not sure that Stovold would approve, but given the circumstances I would suggest a reverse green sweep to Bounds Green
  9. Morning All, I am back in the office this morning - which was a bit of a shock to the system after the break! The weather is relatively chilly, (around freezing) and the drive to work was very foggy. Sorry to hear about your friend, Dave. Have a good day everyone...
  10. Morning all! Just a quick visit to wish all ERs a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2020.
  11. Morning All, It's a chilly morning, but there is no sign of the snow that was mentioned on the radio. Although, there's probably some up in the hills. Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  12. Precisely! I have no idea. However, Here is a link to the article in question: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/scientists-record-stressed-out-plants-emitting-ultrasonic-squeals-180973716/
  13. Morning All, The weather is fairly chilly this morning, but dry. The radio were reporting freezing rain in places, but the temperature with us is 3°C. It looks like it could be the central heating boiler expansion overflow. We had a similar construction until our heating system was renovated. It is usually associated with a pressure release valve which vents water from the system when the pressure is too high. There was an interesting piece in the news this morning. Apparently, Plants emit an ultrasonic "scream" at between 20 and 100KHz when they are cut or damaged. The paper concerned has yet to be peer reviewed, but I was reminded of one of Roald Dahl's "Tales of the Unexpected". I seem to remember that one of those was about a Man who invented a machine that could hear plants and trees screaming. Have a good day everyone...
  14. Morning All, It is another fairly chilly morning. The temperature was around 2°C but there didn't appear to be any frost. Counting down the days now. I have some annual leave left to take, and it has got to be gone by the end of the year - so Thursday will be my last day in the office for this year. Have a good day everyone...
  15. Morning All, It is reasonably mild in this part of the world. However, the forecast indicates colder weather later in the week. There isn't a lot else to report, so I guess it is time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  16. Morning All, It is a chilly morning here - but nothing unusual for the time of year. There isn't a lot else to report, so I guess it is time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  17. Morning All, We have a very cold morning today. It was -4°C at home, although it is a slightly warmer -2°C here. Sorry to hear about your wedding ring, Neil. I'd be devastated if I lost mine. My ex-wife lost hers (while we were still married) but I managed not to loose mine. I wear mine all the time - except when I am working in the garden or doing anything electrical. Many years ago, a colleague had a very nasty workplace accident involving a wedding ring and a high current supply, so I always remove it. I'll leave details to the imagination! Have a good day everyone...
  18. Morning All, The temperature is hovering around zero, and it is foggy - but there doesn't appear to be much in the way of frost. Yes Bob - I read up on the history of the Ace Cafe after posting yesterday. I lived in London in the 90s and so this cannot be the incarnation of the Ace Cafe that I remember. I may be wrong, but I think the one I remember used to be on the A13, and given the route that I used to take, somewhere between Purfleet and the North Circular. Of course, much has changed in that area since the 90s! Have a good day everyone...
  19. Morning All, We have a chilly (3°C) and damp morning today. Seeing Chris mention the Ace Cafe brings back memories of the time I lived in North London. I am surprised that the place is still going! I used to drive past it often. It just goes to prove that however much things change, some things always stay the same! Have a good day everyone...
  20. Morning All, It is a chilly morning today. The first morning where the temperature is below freezing (-2°C). Sorry to hear about your family Dom - It's amazing how these things seem to come together. Glad that your Dad's procedure went well though. Have a good day everyone...
  21. Morning All, It is another extremely wet morning. At this point in time it is raining quite heavily, but it is mild for the time of year. I expect this (https://aspenfuel.co.uk/) or an equivalent is available across the pond. I use it in my mowers and hedge cutter. It is more expensive than normal petrol, but has the advantage of not gumming up the carburettor over the winter and it doesn't "go off" like petrol station fuel does. The added advantage is that the fumes aren't nearly as unpleasant! I never flew Lydd to Le Touquet (they ceased operations long before I was born) but I did fly from Gatwick to Heathrow on the Helicopter link. It was quite an amazing experience which is unlikely to ever be repeated. Shame really - but I can understand that the local residents weren't particularly enamoured by the noise and it was only ever supposed to be until the M25 was finished. However, the best way to cross the channel will always be the Hovercraft! Even today, nothing is faster. Have a good day everyone...
  22. Morning All, We have another rather mild morning in this part of the world. There was some quite heavy rain overnight, and we still have occasional showers. Not a nice day to be outside! Interesting that Ethanol made the tank go rusty, Andy. I haven't heard of that before. Is that because it attracts water or is it a variation on the diesel bug? I've heard about this from the boating community. With the increased amount of bio-fuels being used, various microbes of fungi and algae will start to grow at the interface between diesel and any condesation or water (which is almost inevitable in a diesel tank - particularly on a boat). Obviously, this won't be a problem if the diesel is burnt quickly enough, but it can become a problem if the diesel is left for longer periods. There are now additives to kill the diesel bug before it can clog filters and cause damage (including corroding tanks and engines). Have a good day everyone...
  23. Morning All, It's chucking it down this morning! When we left for work, it was just drizzling but that has now turned to reasonably heavy rain. It is, but it is registered to an Amateur who lives in Queens County, NYC and therefore he probably isn't in Walsall (although who knows?!?) Time for a coffee! Have a good day everyone...
  24. Morning All, It is a fairly mild morning today. Around 6°C and due to reach around 10°C later. It is rather uninspiring weather wise! Have a good day everyone...
  25. Morning All, It is fairly mild this morning, but very foggy. There isn't a lot to be seen outside my office window - except for a wall of grey! Time for a coffee. Have a good day everyone...
