  1. Looks like no Cumbrian Newspapers are offering it. See here for list of papers http://www.northernrail.org/jpress2015
  2. A couple more today of which the quality is poor. First one is Class 33 D6520 on a tanker train passing through a station in heavy rain. What type of tanks are they and which station? The second one is a rear view night shot of a Class 50, presumably leaving a station with a signal box in the background. Location?
  3. A couple more today.. First one is Class 37 6900 and a Class 31. I think this is Gateshead shed by the famous 'wall' showing in the background and the slope on the right (where I took some photos of stored A3s in 1963). Can someone confirm this. The second one is Class 03 D2079 (03079) taken through a wire fence. I have no idea where this is, although it most likely some works in the North East Darlington area as Repair Shop is written on the building behind it. It was sheded at Thornaby for a couple of weeks from new 07/01/1960 until 23/01/1960 when it was transferred to Darlington, then to Gateshead on 22/02/1976 from where it was withdrawn on 3/06/1996. 4. Article from the carlisle News and Star newspaper today. "More seats but slower journey times on Cumbria Coast rail line" Rail passengers in Cumbria will face slower journey times from next month, as train bosses sacrifice speed in the name of comfort. From May 18, travellers on the Cumbrian Coast line between Carlisle and Barrow will enjoy additional seating thanks to the introduction of new “loco hauled” trains. But Northern Rail has warned these slower trains, which will replace the cramped diesel multiple unit services, will extend journey times.... http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/more-seats-but-slower-journey-times-on-cumbria-coast-rail-line-1.1208611 I would have thought that a Class 37 or Class 57 would be just as fast as a sprinter...
  5. Hi Here is a named peak (I can't tell the difference between class 45 and 46) at Bristol, I presume in the 1970s. Can anyone help identify which loco it is and a date? I have researched the two line names peaks with a centre split headcode and have narrowed the list down to three locos (although I may be wrong): 45040 King's Shropshire Light Infantry 45043 The Kings Own Royal Border Regt 45104 The Royal Warwickshire Fusilier looking at photos of three other peaks, their nameplates did not look correct (here they are anyway): 46026 Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry 45137 The Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment 45143 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards
  6. Thank you for the location info Brian(s) and Jonny. Jonny. just double checked and there are 3,500 slides in total consisting of 20 different slide manufacturers, of which 5 are diferent Agfa types. A good 75% of the slides are quite good quality, 20% are acceptable and the other 5% are basically too dark. There are some later Agfa ones where the slide number and month/year are printed on the slides. The early cardboard Ilford and Kodak ones also have the month/year printed on the slides (1966 era). As regards the rest I have to open each slide and note its frame numbers on the front of the slide, a very time consumning task indeed! Its just the locations I need from the undated ones, the remainder I need location and approx dates. Here is todays mystery location shot. Its of Brush Type 2 (as we used to call them) Class 31 No. 5527 in its original green livery with a Class 37 behind. The Nissen huts in the background may help with identifying the location. Date? Howie
  7. I am in the process of cataloguing my friends 1960s and 70s railway slides which are all mixed up. There are around 3,000 and its turning out to be a mammoth task. I think he must have emptied all his slide boxes in a heap then threw them up in the air! Here is the first of many.. Class 47 1662 Isambard Kingdom Brunel approaching an undentified station. Can any of you experts help? Howie
  8. Hi Porcy, That picture takes me back.... My friend and I used to occasionally bunk all the north-east sheds on Sundays in the 1960s. Percy Main shed was locked up on a Sunday so we used to climb over the main gate to get into the shed. One Sunday a woman from the terraced houses behind the gate shouted at us an threatened to get the police, so we crossed over the bridge on St Johns Road (from where the photo was taken), into the field past the bridge and crossed to lines into the shed. We went on a nostalgic trip to the shed site at Easter in 2009 and found the shed area and terraced houses have been replaced by a modern housing estate (like so many others). I thought my memory was playing tricks as I could not see any sign of the bridge that we crossed over that day. After seeing the photo I realised it must have been demolished. Do you know when and why it was knocked down? Howie
  9. I am looking vary pensive as my photo is taken beside Class 47 D1579 at Darlington Bank Top Station, along with my faithful notebook visible in the blazer pocket. Those were the days when you could live on Lyons Gala Fruit Pies and ice cold milk from the machines on the station platforms and wore what your parents sent you out in! I didn't normally wear my school cap when out spotting but it was a wet day and I hated getting my hair wet.
  10. A slight twist on the thread title, we have 'Start of the Tugs'. Here are some photos I took ouside the Brush Works at Loughborough on a miserable wet day Sunday 27th July 1991. I was lucky in that all locos had their front numbers painted on as most did not have their side numbers.. 60073 with no number, no sector decals or 'Cairn Gorm' nameplates. On the right we have 60069 complete with number, coal sector decals and 'Humphry Davy' nameplates. Centre is 60011 'Calder Idris' probably in the works for rectification. On the left is 60075 with no number, sector decals or 'Liathach' nameplates. 60069 with no number but with coal sector decals and 'Humphry Davy' nameplates. 60074 with no number, sector decals or 'Braeriach' nameplates. On the right is 60076. 60072 with no number, sector decals or 'Cairn Toul' nameplates. On the right is 60068 'Charles Darwin'. 60068 with no number, sector decals but carrying its 'Charles Darwin' nameplates. On the right is 60071 and left 60072. 60071 with its number and coal sector decals but not carrying its 'Dorothy Garrod' nameplates. On the left is 60068.
  11. Checking out photos on the internet, it looks like it is 4141. https://www.flickr.com/photos/8755708@N07/6823915756/in/photostream/ Thanks all for your help...
  12. Thats what I initially thought.... but as there were no 61xx locos at Barry in1966, I then thought its a 5101 class loco of which ten listed in the posts above were at Barry in 1966 (4156, 4157, 4164 and 5182 being cut up before 1966). I will have to try and eliminate them one by one by looking at photos on the web
  13. I took this photo in Woodham's scrapyard, Barry in August 1966 and have been trying to identify which class and/or loco it is. I'm not very good at identifying GWR tank classes as many are similar to each other. I found an identical photo in the same position on the internet, but alas that also did not give the locos number.
  14. One instance when it travelled the WR was on 5 June 1965 when it was at the head of a Scottish Locomotive Preservation Fund special. The train had originated in Edinburgh and travelled via the ECML and the N&C to Carlisle behind A3 no 60052 Prince Palatine. The A3 had unfortunately failed at Carlisle and 60027 had been hurriedly commandeered to take over for the journey back to Edinburgh via the Waverley route. http://www.railbrit.co.uk/imageenlarge/singleimage.php?id=30944 Regards Howie
  15. Hi Bob, The only ones I remember seeing on the route are these 4 - not sure where their front plates were located though. 61007 Klipspringer 61221 Sir Alexander Erskine-Hill 61244 Strang Steel 61245 Murray of Elibank Regards Howie
  16. Thanks for confirming the photo of 30499 was taken at Cardiff. Now, can anyone confirm this pannier tank photo was taken at Landore? My record shows I was in west Wales as later that day I visited Barry scrapyard. The date was 18 August 1966. Also, has anyone any idea what the locos number is?
  17. Hi I have been cataloguing some of my early slides, some of which I don't know/remember the location where they were taken as I have misplaced my notes. Here is a photo of 30499 being towed through a station in June 1966, and as I found out later, on its way to Woodham's at Barry. Can anyone identify the station it is taken at?
  18. If you have bought the original negative then the copyright belongs to you....
  19. Yup... the photo is taken on the WR at Parkhouse, Parkhouse Halt is just the other side of the bridge. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=54.936425,-2.9603&hl=en&ll=54.936068,-2.958605&spn=0.007187,0.01899&sll=54.935032,-2.959228&sspn=0.014374,0.03798&t=h&z=16 Howie
  20. Which overbridge is this though? Don't ever recall seeing it before, and I don't believe the Steele Road caption: http://www.railpictorial.com/piwigo/picture.php?/3758/category/13 Your right.... Its about 40 miles south of Steel Road! The loco is about to pass under a bridge (now demolished) at Brisco. 3 miles south of Carlisle. I took dozens of photos around that location in the 1960s http://Google map location : https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=51.0769212,-3.0421186&z=9&output=classic&dg=opt Edit The building behind the bridge was Brisco station
  21. Looking through my negatives, I found this photo of 9F 92060 on a Consett bound train. I havn't got the date recorded but I think it was sometime in 1966. I'm also not too sure of the location; I have it marked down as Stanley. Perhaps some of you experts can enlighten me on that? It was in the transition stage from steam to diesel and we thought we better go and get some photos before steam ended. Having travelled from Carlisle as a pillion passenger on a Triumph, I can remember that the weather was not kind to us! We saw four 9Fs that day (one on ore empties heading from consett) and D5180 on a full ore train.
  22. Ref my phoro of the iron ore wagon on a passing Consett train. To complete the sequence here is the 9F at the head of the train and guards van at the rear. Both slides, being 50 years old, were heavily contaminated with mould/fungus which I have done my best to remove. BR Riddles Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92098 heads a Tyne Dock-Consett iron ore train past Tyne Dock shed circa 1964/5 A guards van on a Tyne Dock-Consett iron ore train passing Tyne Dock shed circa 1964/5
