  1. C6619 86250 crossing th river Caldew brings back fond memories. Taken from the Bitts park side of the river where a gang of us gathered to spot in the 1960s. Edited: spelling
  2. I have a Canon Canoscan 9000f mark II which at the moment costs around £170. it supports 2 negative strips, which can have 6 images on each. However, you can only process 4 slides at a time. I bought the scanner after contacting Keith Long on Flickr being suitably impressed by his photos on the site. He uses the Canon scanner: https://www.flickr.com/photos/24041160@N02/ Here is one of his albums on the site https://www.flickr.com/photos/24041160@N02/albums/72157625267405966 Edited to include Flickr info
  3. It looks very good indeed. Unfortunately, I cannot link my photos to the MySQL database as I scan them as TIFF files which most browsers don't support without a plugin. With TIFF files I can do work in Photoshop without losing any image quality. I then save the improved photo as a new TIFF file and save a JPG copy of it at the same time. Howie
  4. I use an on-line MySQL database so that I can access my catalogue any time from any place. I catalogue by what I call a 'sheet of negatives' i.e. usually a file with 36 shots. Each sheet has its own code and along with the negative number gives an unique key. http://www.howardmilburn.me.uk/locophoto_search.php
  5. One thing that I can suggest is to catalogue the photos as you scan them, preferably in a searchable database of spreadsheet. Otherwise it it becomes very difficuly if you need to locate a certain photo in the future.
  6. NORTHERN could be stripped of its franchise to run services in Cumbria following crunch talks between the transport secretary and local MPs. This week the clamour for an urgent response to recent rail chaos has been deafening as the government came under intense fire from both opposition MPs and its own. MPs John Woodcock and Tim Farron last night met transport secretary Chris Grayling to demand he 'get to grips' with the dire situation in our area. The MPs were told the issue of removing Northern's franchise, and giving it back to Transpennine would be seriously looked at over the coming weeks. http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/Rail-minister-to-consider-stripping-Northern-of-rail-franchise-in-Cumbria-9a4c37d5-8118-4f81-a5a8-21b1af306a08-ds
  7. Ref the Wetheral station building photo. On the far right is the start of the footbridge for the viaduct over the River Eden This cast iron footpath connected Wetheral with Great Corby. This was added to the north face in 1851, because so many people were trespassing on the trackbed, in order to cross. Initially, a half-penny toll, each way, was charged, having risen to a penny by the time the station closed in 1956. Train services resumed in 1981 and pedestrian passage is now free. I remember paying one penny to cross the viaduct on numerous occasions in the 1950s. Tolls were collected from the ticket booking window which was one of the the windows beside the clock if my memory is correct. Edited to include station name
  8. Hi, Thanks for the info as I can now confirm the photo I took in Tyne Dock shed in June 1965 is 92066.. I had presumed it was 92066 by the withdrawal date of May 1965
  9. Here is a shot I took of a WD passing through Stockton station on my last visit to that area in steam days taken in late 1965.
  10. West of Brockenhurst 19 August 1966 looking towards station.. Same cutting looking away from station Google Street View today... I know which embankment I prefer!!
  11. Its 5073 Blenheim. Here is a shot of it near Reading 24/8/1963....
  12. Floriston crossing was one of my favourite photo locations in the 1960s. Here is a shot of a black 5 on a southbound parcels approaching the crossing in May 1966. Edited to add date
  13. Here are some photos of the Dandy: 1. I think this is the last day of the horse drawn Dandy at Port Carlisle station 2. The first steam train which replaces the Dandy at Port Carlisle station. 3. The Dandy displayed at Carlisle station beside platform 5 and 6 before York museum 'nicked' it!
  14. Actually, it was plinthed at Carlisle station for many years...
  15. Here is a photo I took with my box brownie in early 1963. It shows 4F 44081 in Canal shed after doing snowplough duties. A standard loco is coupled to it and in the background is a BRCW type 2 (Class 26). Edit: changed to class 26
  16. Here is a photo I took of A4 60002 'Sir Murrough Wilson' at Carlisle station on 30 June 1963 at the head of the 9.20am Glasgow St Enoch - London St Pancras (Thames Clyde relief). It had come down the G&SW line and took the train as far as Leeds City over the S&C.
  17. 4th August 1968 again and the third and final one of the steam specials we saw that day. Here are Britannia 70013 and Black 5 44781 at the head of 1Z74 the Locomotive Club of Great Britain The Farewell to Steam Rail Tour. This tour was perhaps unique in sharing motive power with another being run on the same day, the Stephenson Locomotive Society (Midland Area) Farewell to Steam No.1. After detaching from this tour at Blackburn, 70013 ran light engine to Lostock Hall to await the arrival of the RCTS tour
  18. Having spent 20 years working with SQL databases the rule of thumb is that if it's not something you will ever need to do math on, you don't store it as a number. Thus to get the correct collation for a varchar field, one would need to use leading zeros.
  19. Database sorting order. If it was just say 3 you would get 24, 25, 26, 27,29, 3, 31...
  20. It's still the 4th August 1968 and the second of the steam specials we saw that ran that day. Here are Black 5s 44781 and 44894 at the head of 1Z78 the Stephenson Locomotive Society (Midland Area) Farewell to Steam No.1. Again, can anyone confirm the location?
  21. It's the 4th August 1968 and with a week to go my friend and I headed south on our motorcycles to photo the steam specials that ran that day. Here is Black 5 45156 at the head of 1T80, the "G.C. Enterprises Farewell to Steam" special. I have this in my catalogue as taken near Lostock Hall. My frend had worked out the locations we were going that day and I just followed him on my bike. Can anyone confirm the location? This tour was advertised as being organised by G. C. Enterprises but carried a headboard proclaiming "Stockport (Bahamas) Locomotive Society".
  22. I used to see the last York South roundhouse when visiting York in the late 50s/early 60s and it was very small. The roundhouses had 42 foot and 45 foot turntables. LNER pacifics were over 70 foot thus could not fit the turntables
