  1. Railway matters are all very well, but JA soothes the furrowed brow and other things most have forgotten! Brian.
  2. And now, back to trains. Particularly the Kingsbridge Christmas double header. For such an occasion, surely more carriages would be required. Brian.
  3. Sorry if I'm behind the times but this is a long way from Home Park. Once when young, my Dad took me to a game but I found some chaps flying gliders outside more interesting! Brian.
  4. My mothers father used to tell of a French naval uniform and sword of the Napoleonic era found in a wardrobe when he was young (late 1800s), no doubt from the Emperors sojourn in Plymouth Sound before being shipped into exile. Rumour r has it that he got off, married an ancestress and settled down in Cornwall. Hence my Euro Celtic background. Rob, more train pictures - quick! Brian.
  5. As an outsider looking in and a sometime follower of this thread, quite possibly the angst shown by some is because the GW has never been associated with OHW. It was all right North of the capital and the Midlands but the GW was in the mellow Home Counties and the South West. The presence of gantries and associated wiring would despoil their beloved part of the country and maybe they are correct. It does not look very good; maybe OK for Switzerland and other countries in Europe but not over the rails of the GW main line West! It may make sense to accountants and other desk bound promoters and sadly its maybe the shape of things to come; we may even get used to it but is that the way life and railways should be, something to be tolerated and put up with? Brian.
  6. Now for some Christmas cheer down at the local. Pretty well heeled customers judging by the cars parked outside; must be the local gentry and all their dogs. The AA is keeping an eye on things! Merry Christmas and have a pint on the house! Brian.
  7. Before trains and after a hard day, I used to belt out a couple of tunes on our organ (still do) which took the edge off the cares of the day. The worse the day, the louder the tunes! The same effect can be had watching the trains go round the layout. Brian.
  8. Really.........................now that's really good news and thank you. No excuse then......... I really should read some proper stuff on t'net instead of thinking I can only eat salad leaves and drink purified water. I do so miss my Individual Fruit Pies, Pasties, Lettuce and Salad Cream sandwiches and especially Saffron Cake/Buns. Perhaps that's why I'm so feeble most of the time? Phil That's really sad, Phil. You have my sympathies! Brian.
  9. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<There must be a turntable at Loddiswell..>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Surely its at Salcombe sub shed to 83A, now that the extension is finally finished from Kingsbridge! Brian.
  10. I often wonder how many regretted two railing Dublo or Wrenn locos? It was all the fad at the time (see my last post on the subject) and in the circles that I frequent, many have restored them to original condition. So there's hope for you, Mike! Brian.
  11. Really like Wheal Julia set in gradually encroaching trees. Just a typical reminder of Cornwall. Brian.
  12. Reckon most did until they were poked fun at by the 'adults' in the hobby as 'playing' trains, instead of 'running a miniature railway' or whatever comparable reason! Brian.
  13. Why Pacers? I thought these were rough riding and uncomfortable, so why are they on long distance services? Bristol and Newton to Penzance according to the CRS, Or am I reading it all wrong? Brian.
  14. If you're talking Dauphines, had one and loved it. Took me all over the Alps and back. Can't see the pic though! Brian
  15. What's with the return of the Pacers back in the West Country? I thought they were all but done! Brian.
  16. Some stick out too far, tow bars that is, and the unwary can suffer severe damage as a result. IMHO, they should be removed when parked to avoid this situation. I should know, as one of them dented my radiator grille and have you priced a plastic grille recently?! Brian.
  17. Saffron cake! That is what we are having instead of the traditional Christmas cake this year. Flown all the way from Warrens at enormous expence as a special treat. Nothing like sitting playing trains with a cup of tea in one hand and a piece of saffron cake in the other. The layout resident spiders and other wildlife eat all the crumbs! Brian.
  18. As Andy mentions, a real bummer. It happened to us once with a willow that draped over the neighbours yard and was given a fence cut. But they didn't care how bad it looked as it then resembled the rest of their yard! Brian
  19. Those 'big' cars were really not that big. Sure, you could cram six in some of them but the engines even at a couple of litres or so were rather puny compared with their modern equivalents, even the six cyl models.. My big cars were a Vanguard, a Velox and a Zodiac al of which can be outperformed by my two year old Acura TL. Brian
  20. Its always good to see new post on this site. Old Hornby and the new brands mix very well. Pictures welcome! Brian Dinky Toys go well with tinplate trains. Here is a selection in the station car park with a trunk being loaded on the Pullman car. Must have come from the Rolls!
