  1. . . . . still waiting for Con Rail insulators. . . . .

In their absence I've been pondering other things on the To Do List. Too many options though. Procrastination and his friend Distraction are ruling at the moment.

maps published in 1938/39 had changed railway lines and other militarily strategic features blanked out.

Military features being blanked out on OS maps was not uncommon long before WW2, or even fairly recently.

Google Earth has put paid to that. I remember being quite shocked to see the local early warning station on Google, as I could work out the coordinates of various bits *.

But then I would hazard a guess that any unfriendly power had ways and means of finding out about such stuff and wasn't waiting for Google to highlight facilities!

Plus the origins of Ordnance Survey was all about keeping GB safe from Napoleonic invasion, rather than providing a map for an afternoon stroll in the countryside (hence the organisations title, for those on RMWeb that didn't know).

    * I'm assuming the MoD hasn't moved things a bit left or right on Google Earth 🤣

  4. If you have to have a gate on the private siding you could use concrete boundary fencing between the gate and then surrounding the point motor. The provide a roof over the motor up against the backscene as suggested by @Nearholmer.

Alternatively, could you put a block of wood behind the backscene and mount the point motor on that? Would that be accessible in both home and exhibition mode?I

That picture is not in doubt but you have posted several maps where that siding is not shown.

It's not on either of the two maps you posted 13 hours ago or your overlay picture from my link.

Ok. The maps were posted by @KeithMacdonald rather than me.

As mentioned above, I suspect the siding life was too short to make it into various map issues. As the aerials are dated 1940, maybe only a pre-war / wartime connection?

What do you see that I don't?

There isn't a siding on there as far as I can see.

Hi @melmerby I've taken a screenshot of your picture and added:

    S for Coal Yard Siding

OS for alignment shown on OS

P for points from alignment shown on OS (a little bit below where the bottom of the line ends, partially hidden in shadow)

Note all this track is inlaid into whatever surface was used. The visible section in my photo has check rails.

    Hope this helps?

I've looked at several maps and can't find rails at that point, they go left not right of where that building currenty is.

Was it a short lived branch?

    Hi @melmerby

It seems to have been missed some OS maps, and yes, I suspect it has been missed off because those areas wouldn't have been surveyed that often and may have been and gone between map issues.

However, if you go on Google Earth Pro (free download, if you've not got it) and roll back to 1940 you will see it on there. Quite a few of the earlier maps also miss off the sidings in the triangle area a bit further to the east if you zoom out.  I can't seem to be able to share a link from Google Earth 😒. Not sure I would be allowed to post an image from Google Earth?

    Hope that solves the mystery?

That lands you here on Google Earth:

Exactly. That's where the abandoned rails are.

In my post I suggested sailors would need to be slightly further West, which would put them IN the creek, rather than beside it 👍.

You might want to try moving a bit further West until you hear splashing . . . . 😁

  10. Moved the storage sidings up to the main boards and spent some time painting the sky onto the backscene. This seems to vary in colour during the day when photographed (!), as shown below. Buildings just positioned to get an idea, not fixed to the 'sky' yet.

Lots more to do on it.

I understand my Conductor Rail order is now at my local model shop, but not the supporting insulators....

Still lots more to do (ground cover etc) before I can call it a day on this area and move the boards to their final position.

What I'm saying here is a good thing. It's identifying a change is needed. I'm not tearing up or dismissing all my previous efforts. Far from it. I'm just saying a reset is definately needed.

It will be interesting to see where you go next Rob following your visit to Bracknell. I am sure we will all be eagerly awaiting the outcome.

  12. Interestingly, just a little further east, this is all that is visible of the Faversham Creek branch. This section served a former quayside coal yard.

OSGR TR019619, or What3words: eternally. morphing. materials.

Or for Sailors (as it is a quayside) 51°19'15"N, 000° 53' 47" E (although suggest you need to be slightly further west 😂

  13. Thank you Graham.

Been to that one before and remember the 23 exhibition being cancelled as the school lost some cladding in the high winds a few days before the exhibition and so was closed on safety grounds. Look forward to seeing you there.

ps Nice canteen as well 👍😁

I should say that we'd be very pleased to see other people's photographs from any show.  It's nice and also of interest to see the layout as it's viewed rather than from our side of the backscene.

Hi Jonathan @jwealleans, happy to oblige. The layout at York on 31st March '24.

Hopefully my penchant for empty track, rather than trains/locomotives, will give others the opportunity to satisfy the trainspotters anticipation of what's next?

Which exhibition in Newcastle is it you are at? Is there a poster/link you or Graham @LNER4479 can share?

When I read this I immediately thought the Panniers might be missing in action.

But then, as this is LM, I realised I was just missing inaction. . . . .

My apologies - I thought everyone of my age (i.e. old f@rts) would have been to one of those seaside tearooms with a little garden by the side. A string ran up over a pulley and down behind some plants and/or rocks, with a sign saying "pull to see the water 'otter" - with a very tiny apostrophe.

On pulling said string, up rose, not an Ascot, but a battered old kettle.

    Thank you for the background.

I'll have a word with the parent. I clearly missed out on this cultural and clearly formative experience as a youngster 🤣. I wonder what the yoof of today would make of it?
