  1. Model Rail now showing first CAD image.

What page number please? I have looked over and over the magazine yet still cannot see the CAD.

Brilliant it has progressed though, seeing at Warley they said they doubt it shall be anytime soon. Hopefully several yellow ones for a modern day engineers train soon!

  2. I really must disagree with this last statement. Dapol are the manufacturer and they are responsible for managing quality and the supply chain just like any other business. The 'buck' stops with them I'm afraid and it is their reputation (and sales) that is tarnished by the poor livery effort on 73102.

How interesting, from your post and others in response to mine I am starting to feel that we may actually be willing to pay double the prices now to have full control over the entire manufacturing process here in the UK. I am sorry but once Dapol approves the production run they are 'in the hands of gods' as to how the Chinese operative shall enact the livery. I very much doubt the operative was the same as who produced the pre-production liveries or was involved with the subsequent negotiations which revolved around improvements. Thus there is utterly no way to control the final production run turning out with all range of errors....unless you are overviewing production here in the UK. With the design team up stairs and the operatives downstairs. Until we accept we want to pay a significant amount for British manufacturing we sadly are in the utter bizzare trap between east and west product expectations.

I certainly think it is a industry wide issue, livery and detail errors seem to be out of whole product control and perhaps we do need to consider we do get what we pay for.

Interesting discussion, I hope to continue reading.

Interesting also the response about how Dapol did the Westerns right or the n-guage right. As this was under a complete different design team and factory.

  3. I understand the frustrations with a livery error, but, with the context of understanding the design process I think we might place too much expectation on a process which happens on the otherside of the world, by a worker who does not speak English and has never seen a British locomotive. Thus when they look at the exact livery instruction sheet from Dapol, they might think well, we do not have dark grey, black shall do - as even though sample after sample has been created they do not see that flow structure and the basic worker shall just make do in the factory. Now this process of course can be managed and I think Dapol should be praised for taking a lot of diligent time in managing most of the errors which have occurred from the process - which happens for all manufacturers in the far east - and importantly I personally feel Dapol have engaged far more with its customer base by showing samples at all stages and inviting comments than other manufacturers. Sadly the Chinese factory/management structure/operatives there decided black "will do". This is of course out of the control of the UK modelling companies, and I do truly believe Dapol have been exerting significant effort to bring us the very best Class 73. I would be far more comfortable with disappointment placed on the Chinese operative than Dapol themselves. I am personally delighted with my livery, the GBRf from Olivias.

(recent livery errors I have seen is the Hornby 67 in Caledonian - where as the team at Dapol shall try their best to negotiate with the Chinese factory structure to deliver a correct livery (reflected in most 73s are correct) - the Hornby example is signed off and on the ship here).

Now here is an idea for debate - if we want perfect models (I would perhaps) - then we might wish to consider bringing manufacturing back to the UK - this would double the price and take several years to build up a skills base - ie. which ever product chosen to be produced here instead would be delayed in delivery. But importantly for the price and time, it would be perfect. Are we starting to see a wide enough customer base who would support a loco at rrp of £250-280, built in Britain by expert tool operators and tampo printers who "know" the liveries and locomotives concerned. I think I might be - but I think I might represent 1% of the Class 73 market.

I want to publicly thank Dapol for producing an outstanding version of the Class 73. I am a delighted customer and I am sorry that some are disappointed with their Exec livery - but please understand it is a process which is out of the control Dapol and the disappointment should lie solely with the factory involved.

  4. I rushed over to the Realtrack stand on arrival, as I wanted to see the new DMU - though Charlie has told me it is not my sort of DMU a few times, I still want to see if it can become one I like!

Charlie or Arran were not about to ask about the new DMU, shame it was not on display. I too thought it was going to be announced at Warley?

Utterly, wonderfully, fantastic. Added gain is they support a truly wonderful museum. Links above to notify. Apparently has been in development for years and well, the pain staking planning has paid off in what I hope many shall agree, the best livery application ever! (in my mind)

  6. In this months Rail Express magazine in the modelling section there are some pre-production sample photographs of the Dapol Vossloh Class 68.  Looks impressive and I might have to invest in a DRS livery 68 for my modern image layout!

They did not have Rail Express in Smiths when I went in yesterday. Could you confirm whether you mean there are photos of the livery samples, or the EP sample seen in this thread? I am looking very forward to seeing how the livery is captured, I understand the factory they are using has new generation of 'digital' ink jet printers to re-create the livery.

I did see in a copy of Railway Modeller (correct title?) a photo of an EP (grey - ie not livery sample) and the confirmation of the lighting, published. I am delighted that Dapol have made their innovation public, lighting is able to capture the halo effect of the lighting when idling.

  7. Ah, ok, forgot about the western.....carry on Dapol.....

I thought this thread being discussed again, first since late October would of been to say Dapol have said on social media that the first batch of 73s are on the high seas and due in shops in around two weeks time :)

Indeed, and the 73 does look incredibly nice detail-wise - although I am still a little unsure of the cab roof 'dimples'.

Another concern was the alarming number of livery errors that appeared on the various pre-production models.  Okay, so they are going to correct them - assuming they get the "corrections" right of course - but even so, it surely highlights that someone somewhere isn't paying attention for quite so many glaring errors to appear in the first place?  Let's hope that they get everything right on the final run.

And we see all the pre-production, first shots, 1st EP, 2nd EP, livery samples etc from say Bachmann? I think Bachmann and others (Hornby) do not release their pre-production in such good faith (we understand they are pre-production) as I am sure there would be the same comments. Hats off to Dapol for consistently releasing images, engaging with their customers and welcoming positive constructive comments directly to them.

  8.

Which other Railcars have Dapol announced in OO? Does this hint that it's back on and still in development after all or have they announced any other Railcars?

The GWR Railcar on the launches pages.

There is a comment on Dapol's Facebook page that they are yet undecided to cancel project or not. I hope they continue, as the liveries are far more reaching than Bachmann. Chiltern and Network Rail for me!

  9. I think what Mike means is that the CAD shows a 59/0 front light cluster with 59/1 or 59/2 NRN pod positioning.

Where did that CAD come from (I don't see them on the Dapol website)? Where can we comment on the CADs...?

On the Dapol 'launches' page :)

I shall be buy one, if some retailer wants to commission a limited edition of the Aggregates Industry livery.

  10. Great news, and refreshing new approach to announcing models, not in one big catalogue, but consistantly throughout the year to keep us surprised and glued.

Doesnt look too bad the CAM of the 59. Wonder how long for it in AI livery?

  11. Hornby have released the latest photos of the upcoming NMT power cars 43014 and 43062.

I am very excited about this release, in having a chance to ride on the real NMT with the mentioned locos.

(Ill give it away, the front grills are meant to be black. This totally throws off the look of the models, and for £209.99 one would hope it was to be spot on correct! If it was around the original price I paid for the last NMT HST of £114.99 I would not of minded, but for such a premium price you would of hoped!)

Shall email Hornby on Monday and though I suspect they won't reply. I hope they read this!

Well I am honest, I had been losing faith in Hornby, but they have significantly altered this today. I just went to the porters to find a parcel waiting for me. Before I show what, some history. I emailed Hornby over my disappointment with the new NMT, as I mentioned here, where I was rather suitably offered for Hornby's in-house modeller/painter to correct the livery error on the grills. Great result I thought for a model which cost £209.95. But Hornby have not just satisfied my original disappointment, but have excelled in painting the camera box too. Utterly fantastic and I am currently convinced Hornby are back on track. Great customer service, I want to say that publicly, as in this case they deserve it.

Look what was in my parcel:

  12. I had a very friendly confirmation from Locomotion today to say I have been placed on the list, and they are 'quite' sure there shall be coaches.... I am thinking perhaps something like the Modelzone 'East Coast' LTD HST a few years back. Though one homes a VTEC set would be some what more successful than the heavily discounted East Coast (I guess going out of business did not help!)

Rather neat that it shall be with 43312 :)

A cracking livery to put onto a model, the last HST I shall buy before the new world arrives

Just to provoke some thought, from the top - the ex-Lima, Hornby and Dapol versions.

That Lima moulding is still pretty good for its age (OK those buffers  ) - way back in 1981 ?? - seem to remember buying two from West Croydon models (?) - Eric (?) was the chap that ran it , opposite the bus station in between spotting RM's & DMS's ............... 35 years ago   :O

Excellent to see both GBRfs together. It highlights just how superior the Dapol one is. Demonstrates if anyone is happy to keep the Lima/Hornby rather then treat themselves to the new Dapol one might find themselves in the new Specsavers advert, where we see them playing with the Lima/Hornby one in bliss. Hmm, might email Specsavers!

The roof detail is significantly improved, with exhaust and grills to depth.

The body side is much sharper (especially noticeable around the glazing), with additional detailing in handle bars and grills, giving a far more superior look and feel over the old model.

Underfloor detail, well, just marvel at it!

The level of detailing is superb, and truly makes the Lima/Hornby one look outdated and destined for the bin.

Also the fact that Dapol are very receptive to polite at show, email and social media comments and contributions show they are keen to make the model as near perfect as possible, and have detailed production a few times to improve on comments. I don't see other manufacturers doing it, truly is a customer focused model.

  14. Limited edition Pullman liveries have appeared on the Gaugemaster site.

    Rich

Very nice looking livery! I think it has well been worth the wait for these Dapol 73s and anyone who rather have their lima might be secretly buying one of these! Out for end of November I read....

  15. Courtesy of KMRC:

Dapol are going to produce 6 Class 68's in OO scale.

    4D-022-001 680......

Ticks all the boxes, I have a feeling that the two DRS liveries shall sell out very quickly as I understand it. Certainly good scope for a second run in a couple of years time, seeing as tooling/design etc shall be covered in this batch, but a good choice to spread this production run over all of the current liveries.

Now...what is more likely? Bachmann and Honrby release the Mk2f Scotrail and Mk3 Chiltern liveries in the main range or a very nice Model Rail magazine commissions limited runs?

Brilliant price too, even at RRP it represents outstanding value for the level of detail we can expect...especially the paint jobs!

  16. I have been asking the LTM since the GBRf special liveries came out, I hope others are, as it sounds if Bachmann would be able to do the livery! Good news that Bachmann are game and I know the LTM would be if they believed customers would buy them.

LTM emailed me to give some amazing news, I am the first customer! :D I cannot tell you how chuffed I am with this!! Certificates shall be given to the first 250 customers.

The Transport Museum has always said that they will be distributing the models at the special event on 26th September and then posting out the remainder of the pre-orders during the following week. I suspect they already have them in stock, just waiting for the launh date to start distribution.

Sadly, that information has evolved. The first 250 customers were contacted recently to say the S-Stock shall be posted out in early September, along with the limited edition certificate (and if you can make the special event, your ticket) via Royal Mail Special Delivery. After reading the KMRC Newsletter and understanding information given to its customers, I fully expect next week is the week. Fingers crossed! (The LTM confirmed, though I cannot make the special event, my model gets posted out with the rest of the certificated models, I hope that information helps those who are within the 250 but cannot make the day)

It is though interesting, they do not plan to release them on general release before 2nd October in the LTM shop or at the Action Open Day. Though I actually like that, means customers who ordered immediately are rewarded by an exclusive product for September. I have to confess I have been epically impressed throughout this process, I hope Bachmann and the retailers have taken note (not announcing until nearly delivered, great communication with customers, rewards for pre-ordering quickly and following up the reward by getting the pre-order out as a semi 'exclusive'). Brilliant stuff LTM!

Side question....has anyone who ordered the S-Stock, conveyed to the LTM how much they would love to see the underground GBRf Class 66 twin pack? I know Mike Walton and his team would be keen if we were!

  17. According to the KMRC Newsletter, the 'due Sept/Oct' models on the Bachmann site are here and expected to be distributed next week. I am hoping that the S-Stock for the LTM was in the container. Sods Law that I am moving next weekend, would be brilliant if they were indeed in the UK. Anyone been to the LTM today, and perhaps charmed a member of staff into admitting the due date?

  18. While I respect the position that the grills can be corrected in moments, I do not dismiss those opinions which differ from my own, I respect others views, as it is very reasonable...if paying around £100±. I shall, as I said in the OP, be painting these black and I understand it is a hobby item - not a BMW. I would of hoped my opinion and view would of been respected, that for the price one would expect a far higher quality control over artwork...especially with such a glaring mistake (when reviewing any photo or the previous NMT pack), though I am sure the artwork was perfectly researched, the failure was QC at the factory before the production run was approved from the sample. I am disappointed and I wanted to know that I was not alone, which seems I am not.

I recall when on the NMT I got talking about the upcoming R3366 with the staff who were shocked it cost £210 and said for that price 'it better be good!'. That is just an outside opinion, but one where many customers across many hobbies, interests and the market at large, expect. I think the NR staff members comment sums it up very nicely.

I am still very much hoping the photos on the Hornby site are not of the main production model. I note though it is available with Hornby, none of the concession stores have it yet. (My order being with a local concession rather than Hornby direct).

  19. As previously mentioned, the new image is not First distancing themselves but a future cost saving by the DfT for a single, permanent image for each franchise with only the "operated by" lettering being changed in the future.

Sorry to correct you, but the gWr rebranding by First Great Western has been a First lead project which has been planned for a considerable time, it is seen as a perfect opportunity to draw a line under the past and move into a great looking future for the GWML. I am not publicly allowed to say who my source is due to Chatham House Rules, but I can assure you this is not DfT lead.

DfT would see the Class 800/801 dull grey! And might still insist on this! 800/3 shall be gWr branded.

  20. I wonder is the slight difference in the swoosh is to do with the different batches built up to 2004 and between 2007/08? I see to the left 0124 which is of a later run than the original 0001-0110? Thus technically if they do continue to make 0127 she needs a different swoosh?

I would be open to the weathered version if it was not covered in brown spray at all, but had the fades roofs as shown in the photos above. The 450s are always in pristine condition and thus I still feel it is madness for Bachmann to produce a weathered version.

All I know is they read this threat, so might actually listen to the customers with the cash already in their bank allocated to buying two!

  21. I am getting increasingly excited, is anyone else, now that reviews of this stunning model are in both BRM and MREMag...we really must be close to delivery!

Seeing as Bachmann recently had a shipment of the 205s, 37s, 43s etc which were due Aug/Sept. I cannot help but think the LTM might beat its 'early September' delivery of our pre-ordered model, stated in an email to the first 250 customers. Maybe just. I am certainly going to be checking the post room every day!

I also hope of the warnings to buy it now while you can in the BRM is true, as I would really like the LTM to commission further limited liveries or a S7!

I fear I have the underground bug!
