I don't think extending westward should be 100% ruled out, a different alignment may be needed for parts of the route both for getting around built up areas and for safety reasons but with a bit of imagination it should be achievable.

Surely the coupling rods will connect to them all at a suitable level (ie coupling rod is flat) to do the job they need to do?
I cannot seem to see a difference between them apart from different screw holder which is where he bit coming down from the cylinders would connect anyway.
Looking closely I can make out the start of the bottom part of the E, I suspect it's a rub off of part of the decal in handling for this particular one rather than a batch issue.
I agree with you about the Peco turntable, I have just installed one on my layout and now just need to sort out all the electrics!
