  1. I did take it apart to see if they were connected before starting, there's a tiny screw underneath and with a little persuasion pops off to reveal the motor and wheels I carefully cut the contacts between the rail pickups from the motor just at the point of them looping round the bodywork/frame there is motor contacts popping through the top which are only connected to the motor not the rail pickups Now I did all this before starting the project but before add a chip I soldered a wire to each pickup, wire to either side of the motor tags (right rail to right motor left rail to left motor) and tested D.C runs a treat no problems Now Orange motor right, Red right rail pickup, Grey motor left, Black left rail pickup As soon as the power is on the O.L is displayed on screen (I'm using a Hornby select controller) (I do have a roco controller and a elite controller to hand if needed) I've done this before to other locos and other motors so it's not my first time D.C to D.C.C but I haven't had it before working for D.C but not D.C.C Normally if I'd did it wrong it wouldn't work for either or blown a chip before today so I'll double check them tags on the top Oh the multi meter I've got isn't working lucky I got a new one at Warley this year must of been on the list The two chips I've tried are a gaugemaster and a Hornby spare I had lying around
  2. Hello I've had most problems but I can't get my head round this one I've built a working railway excavator before but it's never been reliable so I've started building a new one After seeing a thread on here of one built using a Tenshodo motor bogie link below http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/84639-kibri-road-rail-excavator/ now I've seen the insides of this motor and realized the motor needed separating from the rail pickups before fitting a decoder DC running works fine but once I add a decoder into the mix the controller comes up with O.L (I assume overload) Now since I've never used a Tenshodo motor before so It maybe the bogie but I've tried two decoders and both come up O.L The old motor on the old digger was off a old Bachmann Plasser Tamper D.C.C fitted too
  3. Well I think I'm finished so here is some more pics I had to swap Thomas round to the lid because of weight issues but it looks like it's worked out well Oh and I took a selfie of me holding the lid with the second board sticking to it I must say it sticks very well and I've giving it a good shake to check I don't think it's cheating just ingenuity
  4. I wen't to Warley this year and had a long good chat with Phil (at least I think it was Phil) and it feels now like a grey area having the second scene Velcro to the lid I don't think it is cheating, I thought it is was a good idea at the time but now isn't sure The lid does sit on the box and measures six inches but now it's unclear I'll try and get a shot of the whole thing in the box with one side cut away or clear to see through just to show it fits anyway whole year yet will make another one for sure
  5. This is my attempt at the cake box challenge I thought I'd do one for the kids and what better than Thomas the Tank Engine I got a few pics of the net and set to work Here is the pictures I've chosen I started with the baseboard, added the track, the platform and placed Thomas & Bertie but realized there wasn't enough room for his coaches (Annie & Clarabel) So I did a second board to see what it would look like But the challenge is to fit in the box which is 8 by 8 so how could I add a second board and still fit in the box, well the box is 6 inches high and there's only two rules to know about why not use the lid too, problem solved After a bit of working I got it to work so started to add the detailing Here's where I'm up to now and pictures to prove it all fits in the box and more to finish on it yet Here's how I did it, the wonders of Velcro It's not finished yet, The two coaches are screwed in place so they don't fall off plus I use them to pull the board off the lid Thomas isn't secured yet and there's a lot of empty space next to the coaches Looking at the pictures there is a hill so I might add a bit of green maybe add a tree if it fits So mine is 8 inches by 16 inches total space and fits in the box no problem Looking at some of the topic posts is really quite unique to see this and I look forward to see who wins Will be a very tough decision
  6. I've got three they work well provided you don't have any detailing on the loco in question as I've found out they can get in the way when the knuckle opens up Mine are added to a 15v separate power supply for accessories which is a old modified Hornby controller Each one is wired up to a push button as they only need a 3 second pulse to work
  7. I've made a start with my challenge so I'll be starting my thread soon To me there is two rules It must fit in a 8x8x6 size cake box Must contain 2 railway related items The skies the limit and hopefully my idea will work or simply change it Doesn't say on size or scale Only bad thing is I didn't get no cake hhhhhuuuuuummmmmm cake I wonder if it's too late for a snack
  8. Love the draws Bits... n Bobs... I'm sure everybody has them draws
  9. Long time indeed so today I thought I'd get it down from the wardrobe and see if it still works After an hour of cleaning the track (and cobwebs) till it was as shiny like new I managed to run an entire session without one mishap I think I'll try again tomorrow cause I couldn't believe it worked with no problems at all Hell I might even get the camera out and shoot a couple of videos
  10. Long time since I posted here but I have good news I'll be attending Scarborough Model Railway Show on the Saturday 5th May 2018 with the layout so it's a start
  11. I've only ever exhibit my layout once in Peterborough, was only one day but it was enjoyable. If you are planning for another one for next year I wouldn't mind, Scarborough isn't far for me as I live in Hull. Would like to get into exhibiting my layout more often
  12. Long time since I've been thinking of this but with Doncaster coming up I thought I'd have another go I've written up an exhibition sheet to start handing out and I would like our opinions of how to improve it better I'm not sure of charging for travel expenses of overnight accommodation so would like advice on that also this has reminded me I must get insurance on the layout just in case so it will be a case of taking photos of everything to catalogue Anyway I've put a link in to my sheet see what you think Entering the Yard Exhibition sheet.pdf
  13. Long time since I written here but this is a must I went to Warley again three years running and this is a first I had a list of spares I needed and upon the list were number 19's Nem pocket Kadee coupling, can't remember what stall I bought them off but in future I'll check EVERY!!! single item I purchase cause I've heard of stealing at some shows but not with the traders Anyway purchased a pack and put them safe till needed Fitting a class 08 with sound so I'll do the coupling too now that there all kadees For those of you that don't know what they look like here are a few I have in a pot labelled up running a little low Here they are next to the packet that I've just opened up Here is the packet Now without swearing look at what's inside Does any of this look like a kadee what's in my hand There's even fishplates in here for .... sake if I'd have know I wouldn't of needed to buy any Now I've been to many shows and I have heard of stealing now and again from the traders themselves and I don't agree with stealing, it's wrong and you should never do it and most of the time I check some second hand items before buying but this was sealed. So in this situation I've wasted my money on a trader which by the look of the packet HAS!!! done this before and weight them so they feel right in hand My advice to you my fellow model railway enthusiasts is check every single item you buy even if you have to open it cause at the end of the day if you need to open it your certainly going to buy it especially once opened How much are they going on ebay these days :sarcastichand:
  14. All painted now, wired up and now with her name restored above And all looking good :sungum: I will put a light protector on so as not to be blinded by the light
  15. I work in the print trade so they were a freebee
  16. While it's probability been the best weekend outside but I decided to be stuck up indoors doing some DIY instead Oh well never mind I've been working on the name board for the layout and I thought I'd take a few photos Progress so far The old sign in bits The new and improved sign (I have three printed just in case) What it will look like when I finish it tomorrow I put the old one up to see what it would look like This was on the to do list from Neils exhibition way back and I'm still progressing slowly now but hey whats the rush
  17. someone once asked me about the guts of the layout out and how it works, so while giving it a dust down I'd take a few pictures Here is a overall view of the underneath Brown/Blue = track power with feed droppers plus power to the point motors and CDU Yellow, Green/Blue = 12 to 16 volt auxiliary power supply (for everything else) Ok so some close ups now starting with the CDU (Capacitor Discharge Unit) Next to that is one of two flashing units CDU connected to the pointmotors Ok now recently I installed (well I say recent but that's long ago now) three magnetic uncouplers These inturn are used along with the Kadee couplers installed on the locomotive's and rolling stock All this is controlled via a control panel. Now here is how it works, the point is a three way point Peco SLE-99 (modified, I'll explain that in a bit) so there's two point motors underneath connected to the CDU connected to the switches on the control panel but most of use should know all the little details The point itself is modified in such a way that I can manipulate the polarity of the point manually which gives me a 90% chance that all my shunters will not stall at all now to me is impressive where as before I thought the point was unreliable Three push buttons (one each track) activates the uncouplers for a brief second to enable separation Locomotive addresses and for those with sound the functions of each one Hopefully I'll have the layout down this weekend and see if the giant jumble of wires still work Any questions just ask
  18. Well done to achieving both goals with your first layout. With my layout last year was at my first exhibition along with Neil and The Little Layout Company and I must aay it was a wonderful experience, everyone was helpful, talkative and a pleasent bunch of people made me feel welcome I'll find out soon if Neil wants me back either way I'll be there to see your work and just admire the detail you've put into it Shaun
  19. Just got my issue of Hornby magazine through the post, congratulations to having your layout in this month some lovely shots in there
  20. Just a little something I've being working on from the past two weeks Now with a final coat of varnish drying I'm wondering where to put it What do you think? The camera doesn't pick out the gold by the way, it really does look better in real life
  21. Will be watching with great intrest Shaun
  22. Ignore this post I'm just messing with my signature Nope it's not working nevermind Not much to report it's being sat on top of the wardrobe for a while now Will have to get it down one day and check it still works
  23. ah yes class 57 love them I've haven't seen that livery though Are they custom decals or is it one of Oliver's trains
  24. I must admit I am stunned by such a simple track design with lots of detail along with a realistic backgound If you are planning to show off your work at any exhibitions let us know wont you because I would stand there all day and watch you play trains Lovely layout Shaun
