  1. just to clarify the hazard is the plastic fumes....the dremel...has i believe a better provenance....in respect of your location....I remember the nuclear attack advice during the Cold War....in the event of an attack try and stay away from windows...ideally sit under the strongest part of your house...ie a stairwell...put your head between your legs.....and kiss your..........goodbye.....happy days
  2. the plastic does have its own special aroma when attacked by a dremel cutting wheel...can't be harmful anyway being produced in an ex soviet bloc industry......allegedly ...
  3. Boiler replaced not quite as straightforward as I thought...the Perspex tube and the plastic used by GBL have a strong dislike of one another.anyway nothing epoxy couldn't cure...I'm as ever falling into my favourite trap....working on a number of models. Still have the county in the works....western finished...producing bits to convert the peppercorn...should I ever get one...to a thompson.....I feel a bit like the North British loco works....hang on didn't they go bust!,,
  4. quickly removed with my dremel...awaiting a replacement plastic card filling piece
  5. E.S Cox in his book, outlined these concerns ...ie build up of ash on the long anglo scottish expresses...his remedy, would if i recall have culminated in the LMS 464 design...got my Lord Nelson about to undergo a full body transplant...boiler (painted tube...boiler bands courtesy of thin tamiya lining tape) prepared waiting to go.....rest of body will be repainted BR green to match
  6. Mission successful even if from an unexpected source...went into my local model shop...stated I wanted a 24mm od tube....various items offered...eventually the long Perspex tube holding rail lengths...viola...eureka and more foreign words...exact diameter...borrow the shop razor saw and...all i need now is a Lord Nelson.......a bonus...sorting through bits and pieces and a brass Nelson chimney lying there...snapped up pronto...sorry for misleading in previous posts about Nelson it was some of their predecessors the king Arthur's that were built north of the border....the scotch Arthur's.....the bits about the borrowing of other railways drawings though to produce parts for the scot class...and the North British and Derby pooling their talents....can't verify as wasn't present but certainly now passed into railway lore....one last thought read the book by E Cox...weren't the big problems with a lot of 460s.ie Robinson Gcr. Lnwr the build up of ash in the firebox thus creating draughtiing problems...Mr Churchward, solving it brilliantly of course with his 460 family....what a great hobby
  7. or the pool of molten plastic covering my tootsies
  8. all of which brings us back to the boiler skirt on the gbl nelson..trying to source some 24mmplastic tube....over to b and q plumbing ......with my slide rule,,,,,
  9. And Mr staniers reaction when he saw the GWR bonnet , his then new LMS team had put on top of his 260....
  10. Just looked at the LMS castle....predates the hog warts version.....just to add to the correspondence on the railways plagiarising one another legend has it a group of eastern engineers sneakily up their slide rules over the castle they had on trial....
  11. Not least forgotten previous advice about typing in reply section....
  12. I believe the story is that the LMS approached Swindon to supply castle drawings...not least to frustrate sir Henry fowlers Pacific seeing the light of day. SWindon politely...or not ...refused...Mr Maunsell at the southern was more accommodating...not least a lot of the Lord Nelson class was drawn up...or being built by North British loco builders...who went on to produce the royal scots......the chassis cylinders etc lasted the whole of their lives albeit then allied to the stanier( GWR) boiler......apologies for any inaccuracies...but I think that is the gist of it...whatever in both forms the scots were a great class and owe a lot to Mr m ...who as smiffy rightly mentions...was "influenced" by Mr churchward..
  13. thanks smiffy much appreciated not least by my GBL v2 which would have been the donor....in the lucky position, thanks to my friend rowanj of having a resin replacement for the eastern loco....at some stage a double chimney v2 will emerge...but whilst these models keep on coming ..I am already exploring turning the ivatt into the 84xx standard....bought a new razor saw some weeks ago...replacing a 25 year old one...will be getting plenty of use...
  14. Can I ask for advice. I don't really know the Nelson class?...is the boiler a taper one or parallel? I am already planning a cut and shut if tapered....dear 34c sorry but I have already cobbled together a front footplate extension to convert the peppercorn to Mr thompsons a2/2.. Also fettled out two frames for said beast....will show if and when the GBL model arrives...according to my yeadons 60501 had two a1 boilers during its life...quick disclaimer....however this model turns out it will not equal ones to be seen on other blogs...not even close but as horsetan has said let's enjoy the challenge...or did before the grilles....
  15. Thanks smiffy for the photos....it does appear to have a prominent boiler skirt as mentioned in a previous post...the Bachmann version does not appear to have the same ....strange...hope to examine one in the flesh on Wednesday...
  16. Don't know how I put the last line in my post....then again life is a constant mystery to me as my family will testify...

  18. Il grifone....is the diplodocus in Brunswick green or crimson lake ....or ....Apple or malachite ....these things matter you know...black with a touch of grey and red we're very prolific in the Jurassic period....
  19. Do you think they know it's Lord Nelson and are paying us back for trafalgar and of course Waterloo
  20. If I remember earlier....far earlier correspondence..Arnt these produced somewhere east of here....no not far....but further than harwich....my bet is tother side of channel....
