  1. Gents just happy mine stays on the track...not to deny how impressive such modelling would be...I can't quite make it out but I take it the ivatt has the missing motion bracket...really looking forward to the nelson / ivatt.and going on those two the peppercorn...I'm aware this series is coming to an end but what fantastic models have become available for what has been .....well the.cost of a mineral wagon...or a g and t for my beloved..or a couple of soft drinks for my wife.. ...sorry love didn't see you there"..........ouch"....ouch again....
  2. Tony thanks for the pictures of the prototype diesels...realise now how these would be inappropriate given if I am now correct. The date of the stations closure . I too model a specific location and the study of the prototype photos...what few exist in my case can throw up all sorts of discrepancies....not just the rolling stock, differing track formations...movement of running boards on platforms. In respect of the track I have a number of photos showing the crossover from the down fast to down slow lines opposite my models signal box controlling the junction...ok until 1969 when the crossover has literally been moved under my stations road bridge...some ten or twenty feet. I knew my location intimately at this time and had no recollection of this work being done..I assume when the manual box closed at this time being taken over by the area one at saltley. As ever thank you for the inspiration your models and articles have given...
  3. Monty wells, ,loved his articles, always inspired me ...up there with Mr jenkinson...Essery...dyer..rice...Wright..shakleton...Williams...Jackson..finney ...edge...had the privelage of meeting some of these great modellers.....on thing in common all true gents ....
  4. Dear cypherman, I too have had similar disasters....dust can have a corrosive effect over time....water and my book collection...may I suggest posting a photo on site here,,,,not to advertise your misfortune but rather to allow our fellow modellers to make an accurate assessment before any suggestions as to remedy. In the meantime please accept our support...I was going to say sympathies...might be felt by some to be going over the top...but every modeller dreads seeing one of their models damaged by whatever cause. Best wishes Brian
  5. Coal ...lots of it I'm guessing...Earl of Dudley made his fortune out of it...
  6. Mr Jekyll and Mr Hyde...one unaltered one with a malign midland influence grafted in ....a 8f cab window...such refinements as cab brass beading to be added
  7. Ordered British railways short double chimney and markits washout plugs...plus name county of Warwick...my home county before exile out here in the wilds of the Black Country...once Worcestershire...ordered from a very nice man at 247 developments...all I need now is a chassis ...pondering .........looking at my now discarded 8f cab...careful use of my razor saw...might just might, cut out the front windows and transplant in the GBL Kings cab...replacing those misshapen oddities....quick smelling salts over there for any readers of a western persuasion. Will report in due course on the health of this particular patient....
  8. It was either use the 8f or craft a brass version as Tim does in his book..soldering brass around formers...just like the late guy Williams showed in his scratch building books...Hornby plastic won that challenge...sorry Darrel for misspelling your name...iPad predictive text and not checking before post...it should also read GWR valve...bonnet...no two
  9. Hi Tony on the subject of deisels do the prototype DP2 and lion get a run on little Bytham?
  10. hi Darren certainly could use the GBL 8f....better version though than the Margate one I used which had that little box in front of the smoke box. If doing this again...and no I won't be using my GBL one...saving that to see how the Lyndon and Barnstable conversion works out....anyway I would use the whole of boiler from behind smoke box to the firebox...removing dome and adding the two safety valve. The mud hole covers on both need to be removed and replaced in line where the county's were.
  11. The county which appears to be copy of Dapol...Hornby...anyway my new GBL has Hornby 8f firebox of margate origin grafted on this afternoon as suggested by Tim shakleton in his book improving plastic body locos..as can be seen lot of work still to be done, but I thought would give it a trial fit...
  12. Lastly for now the car primer I was referring to auto ace grey primer auto spray paint bought for 99 pence at the bespoke shop of that title....no not "car paint ". ....99 pence shop. dudley town centre. I may have got it cheap as Dudley is currently celebrating the recent enoblement of one of its favourite sons.......sadly my name was missed....hopefully rectified in the New Years....I won't let it change me ...
  13. But of a qualifier..horsetan my reference to the headcode panel, I have just fitted the brassmasters ones....I didn't on my first rail blue conversion....and if I'm honest wish I hadn't on my new maroon one....this is more my lack of application rather than a comment on the brassmasters etch. This was confirmed on seeing you photo...I gather this area I as as per the original moulding...just the undersized headcode letters and numerals absent.....if original or adapted on your model it looks better than my effort....hey ho...
  14. dear both halfords burgundy red...likewise just painted my western...all that's needed now is handrails out of nickel silver to finish brassmasters windows glazed and added....horsetan your head code panel...very nice..as indeed is the rest of your conversion....kevin...like you use humbrol Matt varnish out of actin well shaken. I have found a very...very cheap dark grey primer....it is very good at its primary function....but a very fine mist like spray....a couple of passes over a model from day a couple of feet away...gives to my mind that patina that the steam railway seemed to have.I really enjoy seeing these models being improved.
  15. Looking good, on the Heljan chassis. Ironically my lima chassis seems overwide, part of the reason of course is the locating lugs under the cab doors..requiring those small areas be removed on the GBL body.Even then still a very tight fit..mmm
  16. Bill did as you describe backdated tender ...then sold back to my local model shop for something more topical for my Midlands layout...double headed class 25s....kept my Bachmann A1 though in honour of the class member 60114 WP Allen which found itself as far south,as Worcester, in 64 before being reunited to its nor eastern roots..not before Worcester shed men playing on her up and down the yard
  17. nicely done , looks like its earned its keep
  18. Compared with a Q1 i look handsome
  19. My parents hid most of my Xmas presents as well.....the best I received was an action man "deserter" that empty box kept me occupied for days, with its"open other end" at each extremity..I was as now never the brightest
  20. I was at a Warley show pre NEC some years ago and was watching an ..I think em gauge layout...striving..or its predecessor...by a wonderful modeller chris Mathewson ...sorry if his name misspelt o wrongly remembered ...a ks Garrett crept around this layout with an impressive load... I had recently built a similar model, mine having the benefit of two porterscap motors...the indulgence..no wonder I now live in poverty...anyway this has a d11 motor and single stage gearbox.....and was so silky smooth ...wonderful model engineering
  21. Horsetan not tongue in cheek like most of my posts....any further developments with the western? My brassmasters etch kit arrived today...excellent service...I am currently awaiting the result of your drastic surgery as to where I deploy this enhancement. I have already offered one of the etched cabs to my initial reworked western...and yes well worth the extra outlay. I suspect however your efforts really will improve this model, hence my hesitation...
  22. my bet an ex trix a2...if not a Hornby railroad tornado....as ever the real pleasure of this series?...the anticipation...
  23. a moment of weakness...soon overcome..razor saw and scalpel soon to be further employed
  24. Use of the scalpel having applied to both GBL and Lima ...I have found little difference to the grade of plastic , I am at the stage ...why continue? As already stated if I want an excellent western .....buy the Dapol....the paradox created by this series ..,.some of the copies.can be easily ignored..others such as the western can be improvedI far beyond the original , and lastly some models are from such.a good source model the main requirement is a good working chassis....in short they were and are too good to ignore but are they really a boon to modellers rather than collectors. Will leave that last question unanswered at least for now
