  1. Sorry beastifull....predictive text and failure to preview....I think you know what I meant.....I still can't work out how this otherwise wonderful machine can turn beautiful into that word.....as ever human error...
  2. I see ..a b12 chassis....? That if I recall was the preferred chassis for the GEM version.....the photos of which used to feature in the Railway modeller .....a beastifull and powerful looking engine......looking forward to seeing your model take shape....really enjoy your models...
  3. Even more amazed some of these chassis actually work...the joy of our hobby..
  4. Graeme I too wondered about that...answered by Tony....have built many comet chassis...and other makes....always seeking an aid such as this.....my earliest one was a number of markings on a piece of wood.....I'm still amazed my fingerprints grow back after holding pieces of metal together whilst soldering...
  5. Tony will be at Warley Saturday morning, will if I may join the queue ,and introduce myself . The last time we spoke in person was at a Warley symposium.....many years ago, when you photographed my scratch built model of Water Orton station...( NE Bham)..you gave me the slide some time later....pleased to say the model was featured last year in BRM.....thank you for sharing your love of this hobby....and Being one of those modellers who always inspire me the to try and improve, whatever my current standards are......best wishes Brian ( another one)
  6. Tony very interested to find out how you get on with this interesting chassis jig, looking forward to your further report
  7. Dear all just feeling rather smug after the kind comments about the cylinder....something was bugging me....the cab roof...a rear flare...didn't look right....then...realised I had dropped her whilst fettling the chassis...broke of the rear of the cab roof. A quick dash up the loft....on my knees....there it was the missing piece.....now reunited courtesy of plastic weld.....pride before a fall I fear....
  8. Oh and balance weights on driving wheels
  9. After a rather prolonged break did some more work on 60505 Thane of Fife....valve gear adapted and working....home made cylinders....body GBL V2 and Old Hornby A3. Mashima motor...high level kits gearbox with flywheel....tender converted from Hornby tornado....still bogie wheel splashers on frames to be added and some way of adding brakes ear between the very limited space between drivers
  10. Love garden railways....if I was going to have one though....6 winning lottery numbers......and a different spouse permitting.......dearest please be careful how you hold that latest creation....ok nothing that can't be fixed by epoxy....where was I ..garden railways...in my case got to be O gauge. As an eleven year old in my village... The railway part of which is now modelled in 4 MM. In my loft.....anyway went up this private driveway connecting some garages to their houses. I was astounded to see a 94xx pannier and goods train depart the rear of a shed there...over a trestle bridge...travel around a garage perimeter .the other side of the driveway...back mover another removable bridge section and back into the garden of the said house...in the garden was a model of Hatton station. I stood and watched a fine array of GWR locos and stock complement a fine sunny afternoon back in 1969. I was spotted by the railway and therefore property owners, and rather than being told to .....go away. They instead noticed my knowledge of the loco type....and interest ...no even then obsession with railways. There followed one of those idyllic periods in life..meeting owners of the house ...their two sons...both of whom were ....the eldest was some way older..his younger brother...late teens to my early. In any event treated with considerable kindness and support for my interest in their models. In time ...we all.know...anyway some years later visiting my old village to visit my now widowed...beloved mum..went up the driveway again....track and model gone. In recent times my model based on my home village station was featured in BRM...I was contacted some weeks later by the asst editor...wold I mind receiving correspondence from someone who had lived in my village...bout had since emigrated to Vancouver Canada. I agreed...it turned out to be the younger brother of the family. In addition he had created the same model in 7 MM in Vancouver!,...He and his wife visited my home on a visit to the uk...he was most complimentary about my model.....perhaps the best you can hope for....I stood there...I saw that from that wall......its just like being there......sorry for this indulgence, but he and his mum dad, and older brother cannot appreciate the debt I have to them for my love of railways.....even if their passion was GWR whilst living like me nest to a fantastic midland railway mainline....
  11. One thing probably mentioned earlier but no harm in repeating. The wealth of rtr has not only had an impact on the kit markit....but also the makers and suppliers of the detailing parts which can lift our models out of the ordinary. I appreciate, as evidenced by countless reviews...the ordinary is now pretty outstanding. I visited the Warley show last year and was saddened to see how few of these suppliers were in attendance. I am aware , one factor , the costs of exhibiting there , but still a sad indicator of the reduced availability of these parts.
  12. Thanks cypherman...I suppose it's the matting agent itself , a powder I suppose, which creates this unfavourable surface. I got so fed up at one stage with my lining lifting off, that I tried to master the art of lining with a bow pen. In respect of lining and I think I posed this question some time ago. The reverse curves found usually under the cab window, or over the tank part over the centre driving wheel of said loco. The red and grey reverse....are these included in the excellent modelmaster mixed traffic sheet....cos if they are I've never found them. This might be a case of as my wife describes man syndrome not seeing the thing right in front of you...I reply genius is usually spotting the blindingly obvious
  13. On the subject of paint especially black, I use initially a black car paint gloss. I remember an article back in the day which showed the surface of gloss under a microscope. The gloss paint allows transfers to adhere better especially lining. I then apply said transfers and after 24 hours apply the varnish either satin but most usually Matt. I then weather my locos /stock, this is my personal preference, however the main point since using gloss then matting down...is that a correct term? my lining transfers remain in place something that wasn't guaranteed before.
  14. Dear cypherman a pleasure. I like I'm sure many of the followers of this thread have any number of projects courtesy of this source. I am currently stalled in respect of them owing to my rewiring of my layout. I will post developments with them as and when
  15. Dear all a little motto for life in general as well as our modelling world..." If it ain't broke fix it til it is"...
  16. Ok out of theme but really pleased with this photo which I've just shared with my friend RowanJ. The carriage was bought s/h some 20 odd years ago. It is I believe a comet...maybe an even older...b.s.l...Anyway I repainted and hand lined it ...those were the days I had some profficiency with a bowpen..now sadly neglected. It was always a heavy so and so so was relegated to one of my many stock drawers. Last weekend I thought I would give it a run together with my new Bachmann portholes...hauled by my favourite loco...yes 46256...with some eleven on it struggled on my tight curves...and this devil kept derailing. I have an early Dapol 12 wheeler so it donated it's underpinnings...for now. The comet coach had its heavy brass whitemetal chassis removed and replaced...viola their you have it..46256 now pulls it and another 11 coaches without fuss. I am aware of the Dapol cutouts but can live with them to have this sort of running...I also took the opportunity to tidy up the paintwork and window and interior.in respect of the Dapol body have a new underrate on its way...I have the Hornby updated ones both in maroon and Crimson and cream so I'm going to use it with comet sides to make a 12 wheel LMS sleeper to complement my BR sleepers. If there were ever a series of great British coaches these 12 wheel diners and sleepers would surely be up there with the best.
  17. dear cypherman a sequence of photos that I hope will show how I squeezed the Bachmann chassis into the gbl loco body. A word of explanation, I had not intended to motorise this...having a number of Hornby scots and rebuilt patriots....I had merely removed the extra wide cab beading and added transfers. I have not even replaced the handrails which is my usual won't with these gbl models. I hadn't reckoned on being very impressed with 46100 on seeing her for the first time at Kidderminster in September. A quick purchase of the chassis...knocking up a tender sub chassis...to which you can see I have soldered wire to act as a coupling device to the main loco...hope these pictures help...
  18. Dear cypherman of course I will try and assist...will get the model out of the loft tomorrow and photo...the body of course is gbl...they probably used the mainline one as the source...( OK airfix might be another ). In my time had both types in my roster...all sold when I went em...another story....in fact the glut of discarded bodies then available were utilised by moi together with comet chassis to build up another fleet of LMS 460 s.....then after one failed Hornby rtr conversion too many..my fault not theirs...a reversion back to OO...all my em locos sold or part exed...some like a kitmaster garratt reconverted back to OO....where was I ...anyway will examine my loco and post photos which I hope may assist...one thing I did do with the gbl body was remove all the internal added fixing pillars...can't remember if I had to remove plastic off the splashers or rear cab area to get it too fit...
  19. Sorry slightly misleading the two chassis..both split axle one was specifically for the Nelson...the other the Scot...both off e bay for a reasonable price.
  20. Just googled this particular loco it would appear that Bachmann produced it in LMS black livery...one for sale on e hattons
  21. hi cypherman can't see if you've had a specific reply to this or been pm ed ...anyway your loco I would recommend a Bachmann China made Royal scot chassis. I have just placed two under gbl models. The chassis are split axle something I have tried to avoid having a number of failures with mainline locos. This is probably the reason by the way any number of mainline LMS 460 bodies appear on the market. The Bachmann version whilst not as good as the Hornby or later Bachmann versions with normal pickups, is more readily available and cheaper. The other factor that has made me risk split axle ...these newer chassis run very well...I have one under a Lord Nelson ..the other a scot..hence the two mentioned. I am more aware of the need to keep oil away from the plastic inserts which I believe effects them and lastly the availability of replacement axle inserts from peters spares. I hope this is of assistance..please pm me if you wish to communicate further about this...in conclusion very happy with both the scot and nelsons running capabilities
  22. Thanks Tony for your kind response...sadly misplaced conceit on my part in my choice of 46256....more in recognition of my favourite loco rather than my being held Iin the same esteem as the great man. In hindsight I should have chosen 46235...
  23. Welcome to my world....achievement followed by disaster....followed by....in your case I'm sure completion of these wonderful models....really enjoying your work
  24. Is the art of modelling, to see the potential .whether from a piece of metal, cheap plastic kit, or a rtr out of the box, to create ..a portrait of a particular locomotive...coach wagon or piece of line side furniture that invokes in us ...nostalgia...admiration...envy...dare I say pride if the model attracts said praise. I am pleased this thread has in my humble opinion achieved all of the above. I offer sincere apologies if my grammar is wanting...as per a famous comedy routine...all the right words ...not necessarily in the correct order . In any event, please more models ...modelling to inspire...
