  1. Don't rule it out. Keep this for consideration, just in case we end up with a topic for drinking on the job. It may be the subject of future scientific investigation, so that we can get to the bottom of this phenomenon.
  2. I have some experience of this phenomenon. Not related to red wine but to gin. I'm not sure what the common denominator is. Summer seems to be a factor. When it's a nice summer day, I'll take a pint of gin and tonic to the shed, to save coming back to the house too often. As the afternoon progresses, the quality of my work deteriorates. Was your red wine experience in the Summer?
  3. Phil, Not wishing to be too presumptuous, but that was part of my reason for asking. Assuming you always intend exhibiting in attractive parts of the country, it will be easy for me to convince the boss that we need a week away in a cottage somewhere. "Where should we go dear?". Bob
  4. Phil, I'm sure you've told us previously but please indulge a recent pensioner. When and where is the first planned outing? Bob
  5. My old man, said follow the van, And don't dilly dally on the way.
  6. Wow! I like that, very much. Well done Phil. Like a phoenix, rising from the flames swamp, even bigger and to be so much better. I can't wait. Bob
  7. Thanks John and yes, I'll be there. And I'm going to try to convince my wife we need to visit her mother, in May, so that I can see things at the EM Gauge Society Show. See you soon. Bob
  8. Now is the time to start getting excited. Can't wait for a continuation of the familiar captioned train movements. They've been a bit miss. Bob
  9. John, That would be smashing. Thanks. Having struggled with Bachmann locos yourself, I'm sure you already know the most important areas for modification: - Roof - Buffer beam - Fuel tank and battery box. Thanks again. Bob
  10. Hmm! Yes, thanks Mike. I seem to have spent a big chunk of the last few days on this site and others that might shed some light. What is needed is a series of Green Books on first generation diesels. Anyway, research is an integral and very enjoyable part of the hobby. I think that's the accepted excuse for not finishing anything, isn't it? Bob
  11. Still the inspiration for my junction layout. If it ever gets finished.
  12. Reference to water is a little bit tactless, I feel. 😪
  13. Yeah! Focussing on 9Fs, I missed the boat on SLW 24s. Anyhow, I already had a few old Bachmann locos and thought they were OK until I bought a couple of the new Bachmann models which aren't half bad. SLW would be nice but I'm reasonably happy. I've put Legomanbiffo sound in them and I'm as happy as a sand boy. With a green one on the way, I thought I might see if SLW sound is as good in the flesh as they are on John's videos.
  14. You're absolutely correct. 5101 was transferred to Holbeck in 1967. SLW still do the upgrade. Do you know what is in the kit? Also, SLW sell the sound decoder but insist that the decoder and stay alive kit are only suitable for their model. Can the decoder be used as a standard installation with models other than SLW? Thanks, Bob
  15. Thanks John, As you might imagine, it's only for 5101 to 5111. Bob
  16. John, Do you have any information about the variations in the class 24s used for ore train operation? I missed the boat with the SLW 24s, so I'm having to rely on the Bachmann offering and make modifications according to whatever information I kind find on the prototype. The roof detail relating to exhaust shape and position is confusing depending on the loco and period modelled and I'm struggling to find anything reliable. Any advise or information would be gratefully received. Thanks, Bob
  17. Thanks Charlie, Looks like I'll be troubling you for something decent to replace this one. Bob
  18. Hello, I've had a Bachmann sound fitted class 24 for some considerable time. Catalogue number 32-425DS. I'm making modifications to remove the water tank and while I've got it in bits I thought I would fit a decent speaker. It has a 21 pin sound decoder fitted with the usual oval speaker and inadequate speaker housing. The speaker itself is rated 100 ohms. Am I correct in my understanding that a 100 ohm speaker is suitable for a version 3.5 decoder and that version 4 should have either 4 ohm or 8 ohm? If that's correct can anyone educate me about the time line for decoders. I thought 21 pin decoders were introduced at or after version 4 decoders became available so I had always assumed that if it's a 21 pin then it must be version 4 or younger. Dare I fit a 4 ohm speaker or will the decoder amplifier go supernova? Thanks, Bob
  19. The tender variations is the issue that gave me the biggest problems when trying to select a subject from an appropriate shed. 65844 of York would not have been my first choice but I was looking for a relatively clean example as all others will be in a sorry state. I understand 65844 rarely strayed from York as it was dedicated to an engineering works for most of its time there. Anyway, it's done now.
