While looking for information concerning A4 chime whistles (specifically, 4492 Dominion of New Zealand's NZR Nathan 5 note chime), I came across a rather wonderful video on YouTube of Peter Townend talking with Roland Kennington at Southall in 2011 about the identity change of Bittern to DoNZ. Nice picture and lovely story. I would love to track down that transacord recording and have a listen. I did find somewhere that the 193 is under overhall but I've misplaced the link amongst the 10000 tabs I seem to have open dedicated to whistles (Mrs P thinks I've gone loopy). When I find it again, I shall try to get in touch. Anyway, studying the pic of the Barclay, I'm not so sure that is a NZR whistle. It looks too tall (or not fat enough). Difficult to gauge as its sticking up in the air on such a small engine, and that is a lot of whistle. It has the stepped feature of the different length tubes for each note but missing the "fins" around like the NZR whistle. It looks from the picture that the number of step is even - although this could just be the angle of the pic, but if so I would hazard a guess that the it is a 4 note chime rather than the 5 of the NZR or the 3 of the typical South African Railways. I intially thought the SAR was a good match for it but now I'm not so sure. It may well be that i've whistling up the wrong tree. Found some nices pics of 4492/60013 Dominion of New Zealand with NZR whistle that make for an interesting comparison and are similar to what I remember on top of Ja1275 - although I don't have a picture. Thanks for that - how did you find it so fast on brsince78? Playing them back, i'd agree with you that your youtube link of Hunslet no. 193 'Shropshire' sounds more similar to the brsince78 60013 than that quartet of A4 Crosby-esque whistles. However, I read on the LNER forum that 4492/60013 Dominion of New Zealand's NZR whistle was stolen together with 4489/60010 Dominon of Canada's CPR whistle from Porthmadog in c1963 and never recovered (see link below, post by stembok » Thu Apr 01, 2010 10:29). Do you know if it turned up then? Is it still with no. 193 'Shropshire'? I wonder what got fittet to 4489/60010 when it got cosmetically restored for the Great Gathering? Beautiful! Was Hunslet no. 193 'Shropshire' fitted with the New Zealand Railways whistle? It sounds like BR(E) Crosby replica? I always liked the NZR whistle ever since messing with Ja1275 in 2005 :) The stack talk from those industial engines is wonderful!

I think it is the cable for operating the whistle, like on an A4, the whistle / atomiser steam supply fitting is on the left hand side of the smokebox. It is interesting that the designer of the model has modelled it haphazardly drapped across 61670 and also modelled a different fitting on the smokebox compared to 2859. Also, the two whistles are different: 2859 having a Crosby chime (like the A4s and P2s) in LNER condition and 61670 having a bell whistle in BR condition. Presuably, like the A4s, the B17/5 lost their Crosby whistles during World War 2 because of the supposedly similar sound of an air raid siren. It would be good if someone who has Yeadon's Register Vol 5 or RCTS Locomotives of the LNER bol 2B could have a look to confirm. Absolutely YES and YES! Although not a Dunalastair, just look at this CR scrumptious beauty... While not a SECR 01 class and definitely off topic, I was reading in the Caledonian Railway Locomotives: the Classic Years book that the design of the SECR Wainwright D owes its origin to a Dunalastair II. Not that a Wainwright D is an 01 either... Sorry, sorry, back to topic: lovely blue / green engines!

Yes, Hornby seem to recommend that when operating on a traditional DC analogue layout, removing the HM7000 chip and fitting a blanking plate is the way to do it. The original HM7000 plan was that you should be able run a HM7000 fitted loco on analogue DC layout with the chip left in. However, it seems there may be unexpected behaviour at low voltages (as well as the more traditional issue as to how pure the DC is coming out of the controller) . You might not need to do any of that if this is true: When I looked at the orginal product listing on RMweb (as I find the Horby website a bit rubbish at finding things), the only cat number for 2002 with additional deflectors was the vaporiser version. But, on listening to the product annoucement video (link below), it would seem that they plan to do a non vaporiser version, so no HM7000 decoder. Will have to wait and see if the website catches up with this, as hen I last checked it had not. As they said in This Island Earth: "keep watching the skies"

Just listening to the recording of the Hornby 2024 range chat thingy: Release date for water vaporiser (so called steam generator) P2s: r3983ss - 2007 - Prince of Wales = ~Feburary 2024 r30350ss - 2002 - Earl Marischal = ~October 2024

Previously, 2007 was offered in both versions. However, for 2002 with extra ears, the info released so far suggests only the water vaporiser one - which will of course will work on DC.
