  2. Ah thanks. Please could you also look at the motion bracket and the front end: Is the motion bracket taller and smokebox outer door removed on the double Kychap version? Also the cab plumbing should be a bit different. If you wouldn't mind, could you please do a side be side picture of them both? Many thanks! Mavellous to have a RTR W1 in 4mm.
  3. Yes to rebuilt W1 more TE that an A4... But both would have been inferior to a 3 cylinder compound W1 with the bugs fixed and driven properly - a la Chapelon 242A1! *dreams*
  4. Yes, I prefer the look of 2002 before modification, but it didn't work very well! I wonder how may others think the same and would rather wish that Hornby produced a model of her like that (actually, like the one currently on the website)? Why build a very nice decorated engineering prototype of the version they are not going to do? 🤔 Thank you! Although, I thought that the SNCB class 1 was before Cock O' the North but it seems it was built after. That blended wing effect borrowed from LNER W1 No.10000. I'm sure I read somewhere that OVS Bulleid was responsible for it... Anyway, on reviewing the SNCB Class 1, stylistically it is closer to 2002 with addition smoke deflectors infront of the blended wings which start at the front of the smokebox...

In a parallel universe this could have been rectified if A1 trust had actually wanted to build Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive then they would have chosen to build a refreshed W1 as a 3 cylinder compound and called it British Enterprise. Rather better than the thermodynamically and mechanically challenged, track straightening green monster P2! 😱 Also in a parallel universe, Hornby would be better and not renege on model quantities for their customer base. Hello fine folks of RMWeb, I know this is way, way into the future and none of it really matters etc, but does anybody know if the model of R3984 Earl Marischal is to be with or without the additional smoke deflectors?*** ***= EDIT: Me from the future. Answer = without* See, the image on the Hornby website has been updated from a photograph of the real engine before it had the smoke deflectors added, to a nice side relief full colour representation of a model of the same thing. https://uk.Hornby.com/products/lner-p2-class-2-8-2-2002-earl-marischal-era-3-r3984 However, in their engineshed blog and various other press releases, they have produced CAD artwork which shows the engine with the later smoke deflectors and have stated: "Another feature that has been asked about is the secondary smoke deflectors as fitted to 2002 ‘Earl Marischal’ and yes, these have been tooled and will be added to that model. While we do not have a physical sample of that with us in Margate at the moment, I thought I would treat you to a CAD shot." Thanks to: Now, I believe that when the additional smoke deflectors were added on the real engine, the orginal wings either side of the smoke box were cut back by ~11ins and some upward inclining surfaces added at foot board level as seen in the (hopefully) attached pics. (Google LNER Earl Marischal). Which means just adding the deflectors on their own is not quite correct. The colouriseation of the CAD indicates to me that the Hornby design has the front and a section of the boiler casing as seperate parts to be able to cater for the different designs of P2 obviously those similar to the Belgium Class 1 pacifics or those with Bugatti noses. So I would imagine that they are planning to do both versions of "pre Bugatti-arised" Earl Marischal as well as be able to do an "A4 fever" version in the future too should enough demand arise. So can anybody clear up if: 1) it is intended that R3984 to be "as built" or "as modified" 2) and then a future (yet to be announced) release, which does the other version that didn't get done first. This is my guess based on what happened with their LNER w1 10000 "Hush Hush" where the original engineering prototypes showed three versions of which two were grey: R3840 in original(ish) condition, R3841with "British Enterprise" with name plates and double Kychap exhaust which changed to single chimney to allow another model release R3979 without nameplates but double Kychap exhaust.   8. Hi Mike, thanks for this. I seem to have forgotten how to drive the NRM search engine. I can waltz around the Stratford and Doncaster drawing lists I have quite easily but found it hard to get to the link you have posted. It is quite fascinating how EE fits into the GEC family tree. There must be a vast amount of documents in that archive! I have sent a request and will see what they say.

However got many things to consider: My prefered choice of motor so far is a bit longer than back to back; i've got to find room for a 1:1 scale driver and foot well plus make allowance for non scale minimum radii. Also, because i'm running on aluiminum rail, I want to design the bogie wheelsets to have some self steering. Many thanks, will send a request. Thank you for this. Have sent them a message.
  10. Don Ashton was the go to man for Stephensons and Walschaerts' valvegear. His death in 2020 has made the model engineering world all the poorer. He has left behind a lot of information in magazine articles (Model Engineer and Engineering in Minature), a book on his design process available from Camden Miniature Supply and his website which is being kept up and running. Hello, I have felt very inspired by Accurascales most excellent 4mm model of the class 55 Deltic to think about building a larger scale model as a future project. *dreams* *also naively disregards how many other projects are on the go!* Would welcome advice on suitable source information held at the NRM in York (i.e. which collections?), book recommendations with dimensioned line drawings etc, or knowledge of 5" / 7.25" gauge designs which look the part. I am most interested in the bogie, body and noses to check if my idea for how to do the traction motors is going to work and not crash into anything. If anybody could help with pointers I would be most grateful. Until recently, I had little interest in "dirty diesels" (I blame Accurascale and the DPS 😉) so don't have much info on them. Figured if you're going to do any diesel locomotive, then do one that has 72 pistons and sounds like it might actually take flight once its done ripping all the air to shreads.   13. Well now... That is a leading question in a deep subject which I confess I am not an expert within but do have enough knowledge to be dangerous. My answer is: Yes. They are all wrong. All consumer and commercial camaras and screens approximate colour because of the way they and the human eye work. Don't be afraid - I could totaly do that! However, I think you may have misinterpreted that I was claiming the colour of a certain West Country locomotive was that of the emblem of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! Clearly, you think they are not the same, but have some doubts. For myself, having looked at the real locomotive for a long time with the Mk1 eyeball 😉 and compared that to a memory of the well thought out emblem I have since given some cursory glances to, i'd agree that the colour is different. But, this is an opinion and it is of no consequence or concern at all, and might not be correct! What is much more interesting, is whether Hornby can produce a model which represents the real locomotive? I do wish them every success and hope it brings pleasure to people who get to own a model. I thought everybody knew that all Great Western engines were the wrong colour? The only correct green for a locomotive is Doncaster Apple Green! Regarding the colour of No.70 Elizabeth II, discussion will be much aided by having a ride on the Severn Valley Railway and studying the thing with your own eyes. You too can simultaneously mentally tut and marvel at what an inspired colour it is. Btw: It is as blue as a banana 🤪

The colour checks out "correctly". *cavaets not limited to: experiences of colour rendition on differing materials / textures, small vs. big surfaces, colour recording on a camera, colour viewing on a screen etc but at least under same diffuse daylight lighting conditions. Had a throughly fun day playing at the SVR where No.70 was mobbed by hoards of happy punters which hopefully translated to much needed funds for black gold (coal) as well of making loads of great memories for people big and small. Well done Severn Valley Railway! Also had a close inspection of No.70 myself and found helpfully that the exact RAL number colour has been written on the tender by the painters. I have hopefully attached a picture which you may need to zoom in on. I'd like to think the SVR General Manager still doesn't know what the colour is...

However, it is an absolutely irrefutable, cast iron, solid gold, grade A fact that all trains and locomotives should quite rightly be purple.
