Freeing up an old Portescap motor / gearbox
ScRSG replied to John_Hughes's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
I've had one or two of these go "tight" in my time. The way I found to help was, first to remove the motor from the gearbox, It is likely that the motor is ok and will run freely off the box. You can them manipulate the gears by hand and they should begin to free off, by all means follow the advice above to help with any kind of cleaner and once free re-lubricate lightly. -
Tony, The Ferryhill turntable was situated to the side of the main shed, and near the rear of the shed. It was between the shed roads and the roads leading to the coaling stage. Claim no absolute knowledge but will credit Paul Bolger's "BR Steam Motive Power Depots - ScR." Chas

On the swinging truck issue, perversely the non swinging truck actually looks perfectly ok on straight or with decent radii bends, but will look faintly ridiculous on first or second radius curves (yuck). I have converted virtually all of my swinging truck duchesses to the fixed truck arrangement and I am lucky enough to have a minimum 3ft. radius, and even larger on the viewing sections. The fixed truck arrangements on these, the Standard and LNER pacifics is by far the best solution.

Got to keep this thread going if, for no other reason, to embarrass Dapol and the ridiculous time it has taken to get these to market. Still believe it was an absolute con merely to stop other manufacturers from stepping in!

And I've got to ask, do the suppliers of these trains, presumably Heritage lines etc. not ask what period the film is set and provide accordingly?

Re track cleaning, just a wee plug for David Franks (Lanarkshire Model Supplies) track cleaner fitted in an ex-LMS brake van. We use this on our "Alloa" layout at exhibitions and have found that we get perfect running over a two day show without having to clean the track in that time. A similar device to the Noch one mentioned above but the cloth is fitted to a heavy roller. Chas

Guys, surely if Thompson locos ran on the part of the railway that you model, then that is more than enough reason to model them, no matter what the prototype does to your sensibilities!
-
Yeah, sorry, don't know why I forgot them, I think it's an age thing! They have, indeed, been there a long time and I must get round to paying them a visit again soon.

What are you lot on?!!!!!!

OK, to firmly squash this rumour, there is no chance of the shop in Bell Street re-opening as D&F with the original owners involved. I can only speculate as to why this rumour has started and I will put forward one theory. When D&F were in residence there, the frontage above the shop was properly painted with D&F Models name, when Waddell's took over, if I remember correctly, they just covered this with a "removable" board. Given they have now left and there is a requirement to return the property to an original state, then if that board was removed it would have uncovered the original D&F logo, so maybe someone has seen this and put 2 and 2 together to make about one hundred and fifty! So, sorry, but Dave, Irene, Chas etc. are perfectly content with their retirement status, although Dave does visit the Uddingston Model Centre to do the occasional repair for John. This shop, and the small shop in Partick (with very limited railway stocks), will remain as being the only ones in the west of Scotland catchment. We have not heard any rumours of a shop re-opening in the former Bell Street premises as a model shop. Chas

See above!

Sorry folks, unless Dave is keeping secrets from me, there is no chance that this will be happening, at least not with the original crew and I don't think that anyone else will open it with that name! Quite honestly, it must be seriously difficult to run a model shop nowadays, especially with the lack of stock available and the way prices have been going over the last few years. Chas

Just an update on progress so far, the fiddle yard is complete for both trackwork and electrics. The two views of the main layout are from either end, the pointwork at one end has started to be fixed down and the rest laid roughly in position to get a sense of how it will look and to try to ensure that the "flow" will be as good as we can make it. All the control panels are complete and the cables from them to the baseboards are in progress.

My most read thread ain't working on Internet Explorer 11, it just freezes, all other threads seem to work ok. Today I got a script error which pointed to a YouTube link which seemed to be causing a problem (There were some videos posted on this page) and , of course, there has been a recent large update to Windows 10, which always seems to create some chaos somewhere on a system! The thread, for some reason, runs ok on Microsoft Edge, but I really hate this browser, why can't they just leave things alone!

Gresley Suburban Coaches - did they get lined when painted Maroon?
ScRSG replied to ScRSG's topic in UK Prototype Questions
That's interesting, never realised that this was the case, I am old enough to remember going to school in Thompson suburbans (we always looked for the toilet composite with the short corridor!) and they were lined out. I assume, then, that the Gresley's were the same if they lasted into this period. Fortunately the layouts they appear on are all Scottish based! -

Ah, but I'm back now, so look out! -
Funnily enough, we were talking at our group last week about the problems with the Hornby chassis and at the moment I am attempting to build a Comet Duchess chassis using the wheels from the Hornby model (to save the cash on a new set) You do need 3mm bearings and High Level can give you gearboxes with a 3mm final drive gear. While I am using the full Comet chassis with their valve gear etc., it seems to be going fine. The discussion then went further to raise the possibility of using all the Hornby bits, i.e. wheels, valve gear, cylinders etc.and one of our crew, a well known modeller(!), said he may be looking at the possibility of producing chassis frames etc. designed to do this and it would seem that the Scots and Patriots would be ideal candidates. It is also interesting in that it is not "Mazak Rot" which seems to be the main cause of the problems but merely (?) a design problem. As an aside, it is interesting to report that Markits (Romford) crank pins screw into the Hornby wheels, useful if using the Comet coupling rods.

Just started doing railways, very limited stock as yet. Good stocks of OO buses trucks etc.

Just one point on using wire for the point rodding, Tony, it is possibly very susceptible to expansion over a longish run (ask me how I know!) and gives most un-prototypical bends in the rods. Will be interesting to note how you deal with this possibility! Chas
