  1. One doesn’t simple ‘attempt’ livery application, it’s a full blown part of the production process, incurring a considerable cost. Until the tooling sample is in a position to receive the livery, it just isn’t viable. Hornby will show the decoration sample when they’re good and ready to do so, and not before. There are a team of people in Development who are working their socks off to deliver a fantastic model, and that process cannot, and will not, be rushed...
  2. Interesting that you’ve picked up on that @SM42as I agonised over whether to portray that stripe as white or yellow. In the end, I erred towards yellow having looked at some other examples that featured similar colourisation. It would be interesting to hear other viewpoints, after all, this is why we publish decoration artwork in the first place!
  3. Simon stepped in to write and curate Engine Shed when I left Hornby back in September. I always signed it as ‘The Engine Shed Team’ to recognise the work that Lucy (web) and David (photographer) put into helping get the blog out every four weeks. That’s aside from the input from the Development team, who supplied CAD images, Decoration Guides and Factory images. Hope that goes some way to helping explain?
  4. Now that’s a photo I’d like to see...
  5. Ah, but if we did, we would undoubtedly do them better, wouldn’t we?
  6. On my 1868 Railway Atlas, anything north of the Medway is marked with "here be sea monsters", apart from the kingdom of Hertfordshire (which is obviously the centre of the known universe). Does that mean I need a bigger fuel tank for my Model T Fran?
  7. There are huge difficulties in producing new rolling stock models that, to all intents and purposes, are in parallel development to the actual prototypes, as I found out when researching for the development of the Hitachi Class 80xxxx and the Mk.3SD coaches. So many design elements are changed during the process, and then testing will also result in last minute changes, which can mean that CAD and tooling has to be changed at the eleventh hour to keep the models authentic.
  8. You’d be surprised at what drawings I’ve picked up here and there at places I’ve visited and at various auction sites....
  9. Best one yet, I like that... On another note, yesterday was my final day with Hornby, I’m now serving out my time ‘off-site’, so the next Engine Shed will be brought to you by a new author. Thank you for all your support this year, as our small team sought to restore Engine Shed to its former glory, and I hope that the blog will carry on in the same spirit with your continued support. Best wishes, Paul
  10. I’m liking the idea of being a buccaneer, because that’s just being a nationalised pirate...
  11. There was no need for such a document, or any other confidentiality agreement @gwrrob; that sort of thing isn’t my style and I shall be keeping Hornby’s future plans to myself, not just because of my own principles, but because I respect the lads and lasses in Hornby’s Development team too much to reveal the 2021 projects ahead of time.
  12. Thank you all for some wonderful comments, no pressure to the new role then! As Fran has already indicated, I am massively excited for the future and I can’t wait to get my feet under my Accurascale desk and to make a start on those new projects. Best wishes to all, Paul
  13. And now live folks - sorry for the delay... https://www.Hornby.com/uk-en/news/the-engine-shed/new-tooling-latest-running-samples
  14. Just a few gremlins in the system today, so the Blog is currently being re-uploaded in its entirety. Normal service will be resumed shortly...
  15. Folks, from the horse's mouth - they're samples, not renders.
  16. 370007 was unique in that respect, and that difference has been accounted for in the tooling...
  17. Unfortunately, that’s how dark it comes up within Adobe Illustrator Paul, but I can assure you that we have specified RAL 7016 within the artwork. The decoration sample will be what we judge the colour on, not how Illustrator renders it.
  18. That painting is far too light - The author William Brown has worked with us to get the livery correct and RAL 7016 is considered the correct colour for this phase of the locomotive's livery.
  19. Comes up darker in artwork than it does on the RAL swatch, unfortunately, but we've discussed the livery at length with William Brown, whose knowledge of the subject is unsurpassed, and we're all happy that it is correct.
  20. Unfortunately I know very little of how the range will progress from the Academy re-box models, and what I do know, I’m not allowed to mention! It’s certainly an exciting time for Airfix and there are subjects that I’d love to see modelled by their development team. One thing I miss because of having to work from home in this current crisis are the discussions over a cuppa in the kitchen, regarding new projects that the Airfix designers are working on.
  21. Doing the same thing myself, though in my case it’s a mixed bag of 1/48, 1/72 and 1/144 aircraft kits, some resin wagon kits, some laminated card carriage kits and even some ancient Kitmaster/Airfix loco and coach kits. I even have a couple of brass Roxey Mouldings kits that I’m determined to get to grips with!
