  1. Well I took the plunge this morning and found removal fairly simple. The number plate printing and shirtbutton were first applied with Microsol and the gold was an easy removal. The number plate black was more stubborn and needed a few gos to remove and I did resort to T-cut to lift the final remnants. No damage to the green beneath whatsoever. New Great Western lettering applied and just waiting for the Narrow Planet plates to arrive. As a side note there are two sizes of Andrew Barclay works plate - which I was unaware of, and for 701 it looks like she wore a large plate in GW days.
  2. Im converting 705 back to 701 as a Swansea Harbour Trust loco. How did you remove the tampo printing as I was planning my usual micrsol and scotch tape method. I looked at the link but could only see about chattering wheels. My new plates are on order which is giving me an excuse to avoid taking the removal plunge but eventually i’ll Gave to be brave.
  3. Ever since Locomotion entered the market of commissions I’ve wondered if they have missed a trick with exclusive rolling stock in their fleet. Now that they seem to have a link up with Rails, I’ve wondered if the Royal Train carriages they hold are ripe for modelling. As far as I am aware only the crimson Mk3s have ever been produced as rtr Royal train stock but they were an easy win. Rails are producing the GNR Dynamometer car and you can’t get much more one off that so with what seems a rich market for Pullmans is a Royal train rake a possibility? Ok way out thoughts are now back in their box and i’ll Stick to hoping for some non corridor GW stock....
  4. I don’t doubt that O gauge is an option but a rerun of different numbers and production of the parcels unit 17 would be better in my view but then I’m biased and am only interested in GWR with a slight dabbling in the Southern.
  5. Bachman are in their usual programme for GW Green locos. Initial release with GWR, second release again in GWR lettering, then a gap of at least one year, sometimes two depending on stock levels and demand. That gap is currently the 2018 announcement. The third release is then either Great Western lettering or shirtbutton. As has been said the top feed presents an issue but am hopeful one will be announced in 2019 with most likely shirtbutton and a vague possibility of one Great Western. Either way I’m saving for one in either livery as I’ve resisted a GWR one so far. This is only my apparent observations of other GW Green releases and not Bachman stated policy. It’s what happened with the moguls, panniers, 45xx, 4575 and 66xx and this year in Great Western it’s the 66xx, last year was 45xx, hopefully next year will be 64xx. Basically there will be one eventually - hopefully next year. You can never have enough Panniers!!!.
  6. I really don’t know if DJ Models are involved but Kernow replied to me on FB saying final corrections are being made to the CADs. Am sure news will be posted once there is any.
  7. I was looking elsewhere and saw DJ Models are less involved with Kernow and it reminded of this discussion. I read Dave’s reply that he was still acting on this one but it’s now 6months and no update here (admittedly RMWeb is not Kernow’s preferred means of communicating), nothing in the newsletter and no FB update after the recent trip. Has anyone heard anything?
  8. This has the danger of becoming a frothfest in May. Uh oh!. But I wouldn’t say no either.
  9. The GWSR Siphon G is an inside frame version so that’s possible. But the ex Lima model is passable with new bogies but the worry there is the market is quite saturated with 2nd hand versions. Hornby also have the ex Mainline/Dapol tooling for the outside frame version. As for a 16t wagon or van I’m struggling to think of something that also came as a 20t version. A ballast hopper maybe? Anyway no point worrying now and am more hoping Hornby aren’t wasting their time. There are lots of other prototypes ripe for selection without retooling Lima models. If at the GWSR, a better choice might be the Monster/Giant there. Without checking I can’t say which it is.
  10. I totally agree they are a fine model and whilst there appear to be packaging issues it is not difficult to resolve more robust packing if indeed that is the cause. I heard a long time ago that Heljan package up in Denmark and not in China. Maybe am wrong but does that mean an unprotected journey on the high seas? Nonetheless, I will be in for another GWR version with Great Western on the tender when they’re released. I don’t think Heljan have any outstanding OO gauge locos so are we due an announcement? With their fondness for one offs or obscure or small classes - Falcon, Kestrel, 1361, 1366,4700s, is it too much to hope for perhaps something different - Leader?, Fell? Or maybe some GWR constituent locos? Ok, enough wish listing....
  11. I’m surprised Hornby hasn’t done many GWR models in wartime black. No 28xx/2884 for certain has not been done and as far as am aware only the 2721 pannier has been done in black and they’re extremely rare. Wartime black I guess isn’t popular as evidenced by some of the Southern Schools and S15s that are heavily discounted and the A4 in black doesn’t seem to sell well on EBay. I might pop into Howes tomorrow as am in Oxford and see if they have a2884 which will probably mean I come away with something totally different!!!
  12. Thank you all. I’d forgotten about the tender demon plug and rebranding a3803 looks to be the way forward.
  13. I’m looking to expand my fleet of kit built 28xx locos and I fancy a 2884 class in GW Green. As far as I can tell Hornby have only ever produced 3803 (R2918) in GW green with GWR on the tender. I would prefer a shirtbutton version if possible to suit my era. I don’t think the 2884s wore Great Western but if so I’d be interested to know. Three questions 1. Am I right in only one model has been produced in GW green since the 28xx was upgraded. 2. Is the cab separate and therefore a straight swap from an early 28xx model? 3. Outside steam pipes and a renumber would be needed if I use a 28xx but are there any other differences I need to adjust to create a 2884 class? Thanks in advance.
  14. Well if it is I will be happy. The only diesels on my layout were built at AEC’s factory alongside the Brentford branch and the only thing electric has Southern Railway written on the side. Anything built after 1st Jan 1948 is too modern for me. But I respect the more modern modellers and commend manufacturers for producing br steam, diesel and electric. I can’t have everything and I respect the choice available but that’s just, it’s a choice. Some like them some don’t. What is important is that everyone enjoys what they model.
  15. I hope you’re right. Roll on GW non corridor stock, a Saint and some new GWR vans - large minks would be a good choice.
  16. Has anyone any experience of removing the decals? Any tips please. I want to keep the colour scheme and just remove the decal without leaving a shadow or sheen as the new transfer is smaller. Thanks in advance.
  17. I agree GWR locos that have not been done in RTR are now thin on the ground but still have Armstrong Goods Metro tank Aberdare Saint (retooled) Manor (retooled) County (retooled) AEC Railcars 2-4 and 5-7, 17, Twinsets Duke Bulldog 74xx 1101 dock tank Whilst not for me there are 16xx and 15xx designs but as they are BR builds. That should keep the interest going and I don’t mind being dripfed. Now back on topic....
  18. Their forthcoming arrival was recorded on the Gaugemaster published list last month which usually suggests arrival in 6-8 weeks. Or at least that was the timescale for the GW railcars once listed.
  19. We are custodians of our heritage for future generations. Just because something is in the way and money is tight is not a reason to simply demolish something. I don’t know much about Steventon footbridge but we had similar issues with structures on the North London Line when it was electrified in the 90s, Brondesbury Park footbridge being a classic example. We lowered the track and platforms and made the footbridge suit the design to avoid demolishing the structure. The same happened elsewhere and it wasn’t possible everywhere but the historic significance was fed into the overall design. That should be NR’s driver. When significance is overwhelmed by cost pressure that’s when our heritage is lost.
  20. If Oxford has merged with or has been bought by Hornby there has to be a stock market announcement.
  21. SECR D class would be nice but unlikely. Has anyone forgotten the 2018 catalogue front cover and the Night Ferry coaches? Hauled by Merchant Navy and Lord Nelson and class 71 all produced by Hornby. Seems like joined up thinking so am probably wide of the mark. Am starting to wonder....
  22. Please don’t stop the pics Rob. I for one enjoy seeing. There is a broad church of like, dislikes and interests on here but that’s what makes RMWeb so varied and class leading in the forum world. If someone doesn’t like something it’s easy to just move along to the next. I for one have no interest in modern image models and I pass over the subjects but I respect those that do. Carry on Rob, you’ve done a great job rebuilding your 47xx and now deserve to show in its finery, with or without the faults.
  23. Am sorry if this has been covered already. As I understand it the GWR 705 version is a fictional as preserved version. But the GWR absorbed a Swansea Harbour Trust Andrew Barclay and numbered it 701. It was renumbered 1140 I think byBR and scrapped in 1958. Can the Hattons loco be converted? I ffound a poor quality pic and it looks like the cab is slightly different along with buffers and safety valve cover but am sure there will be other Swindonisation that will be needed. Can anyone out there help as I need to find an excuse for one of these. I may be barking up completely the wrong tree. Do I need one - no, but Rule 1 will prevail if a conversion is relatively painless.
  24. Am sorry to disappoint everyone and I really do sympathise with everyone who has a duff one of these. You shouldn't have to be returning a brand new loco with some of the faults and Quality control and manufacturing issues identified. I bought 4704 in shirtbutton livery. Arrived undamaged, no loose handrails, stanchions and all wheels correctly fitted. There are no parts that have come off in the box and I cant see anything actually missing or broken. The front of the frames are straight to my untrained eye and a quick test run over a complex track layout has shown no derailing issues and no issues with running. I need to run in mine but overall not bad. I can see the faults everyone has spoken of on here in terms of detail and I am unconvinced by the number plates but can live with them for now. Next time I have an order for plates for a kit I might add it to the order to save the postage. I hope that helps people realise that there are good ones out there and seems I am lucky and this is not meant as gloating, just an attempt to redress the balance.
  25. Sad geeky fact alert! The Morris Ital is apparently the rarest car on Britain’s roads with apparently only 47 left with road tax and MOT cert. According to DVLA.
