  3. Excellent video. I have the DCC sound-equipped version that came straight from Kernow with legomanbiffo sound already installed. Wonderful model. Function instructions not great but I managed to get the front cab lights to work using F19 and the rear ones to work using F20. Trouble is that once the loco moves forward the front cab lights extinguish themselves, but same thing doesn't happen with rear ones when running backwards. I notice that in your video the front ones stay illuminated. I wonder if anyone can advise me what I may be doing wrong or have I just got a 'dud'.
  4. Thanks for the responses. I had not seen the other threads so interesting that others may have had a similar problem. Anyway I did finally manage to separate the tender top from the chassis this morning by pulling down hard from the back rather than following the instructions which seemed to indicate that you should pull down from the front. Once I install the decoder & get it back together again I now have 3 steps & 2 windows to reattach!
  5. I have been trying to dismantle the tender of the Collectors Club 'Manston' to get to the DCC socket. I have removed the 2 screws per the instructions but the top just won't pull away from the chassis. I've already dislodged the 2 front steps & one of the small windows so a bit afraid of doing more damage. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with this tender? All Hornby tenders I have tackled previously have been ok, but have sometimes experienced issues with glue in the wrong places.
  6. The H in the Maunsell set is shown as 31551 whereas the BR one in the separate images is 31518. Both are PP-fitted late crest with flashes. I'm sure Hornby will produce BR early-crest ones, both PP and non-PP at some point, but seems odd that initial production limits the BR crest to 2 versions, both PP-fitted & both with warning flashes, as they will initially be ignoring quite a popular modelling period.
  7. Sorry to disagree but I would definitely be up for a 'Clan Line' in final 'unrebuilt' form with re-sited safety valves & late crest. Even more so if it were part of a "Golden Arrow last unrebuilt MN" set that included some 1950's new-build 'U' Pullmans! PRTRAINMAN
  8. I'm sure you are right as other people have ticked the 'agree' button but for the uninitiated please can you elaborate on how the competitor model is 'more accurate & varied'. Only asking as I already have some of the competitor ones & was thinking of getting some Oxford ones to expand the fleet. With thanks.
  9. Yes, you're right. I should have checked! According to Bradley's 'Loco History of the SECR' 31518 was 'motor-fitted' in March 1952 & it would have kept the equipment up until withdrawal in January 1964. So Hornby's image is not quite 100% correct. Hooray!
  10. Ian, I agree, but the image of late-crest 31518 seems to indicate that it's not fitted with push-pull equipment so it would not quite look right attached to a PP set. I was hoping that Hornby would release at least one non PP-fitted and one PP-fitted BR versions, similar to what I think they did previously with the M7. Philip
  11. So in which year did the overhead electric warning flashes start appearing on BR(S) locos? Bit confused now anyway as I thought that previous indications were that the H in BR livery would be an early-crest one & the late-crest one would be a PP one in a set with the converted Maunsell PP coaches.   12. Agree totally. Does make you wonder though if sometimes Hornby (& others) throw in some 'red herrings' re wheels, chimneys, handrail knobs etc. & then sit back & chuckle at some of the comments generated on the forum along the lines of "should have known better", "not getting one of those then", "the Lima one was light-years ahead" etc.

  14. That's an interesting one. The fact that the MNs were not included in the list of 'Express' locos could be because Bulleid convinced everybody that they were 'Mixed Traffic' in order to get around wartime restrictions on new-builds. The SR even made sure that they were rostered on a number of 'freight' diagrams.
  15. The September edition of BRM has a review of the new model that includes a photo of the chassis with the body removed. There is an arrow pointing to an area noted 'Space for Sugarcube Speaker'. Hope that helps answer your question.
  16. Just come across this layout too & agree with Edwardian's comments. Details of the building process are particularly inspiring. The buildings & structures are particularly effective. I note that post 9 includes a view of the underside of the station platform. I would be grateful if you could advise what materials/construction method you used for this. Keep up the good work.   17. The riveted piece on the right of Hornby's photo would need to be part of the sliding roof hatch bit and unfortunately it doesn't look much like that.
  18. Apologies if this all sounds a bit pedantic but a few points re running 'un-rebuilt' 35028 alongside 'rebuilt' MNs. Hornby's 35028 will have an early BR logo. 1st MNs rebuilt were in 1956 but some time between 1957-59 Clan Line obtained a late BR logo (the only 'un-rebuilt' MN to do so). During it's early BR logo spell 35028 ran on the Eastern section of BRS, whereas the vast majority of MNs ran on the Western section of BRS. The only rebuilt MN to appear on the Eastern section was 35015 for a brief period in 1958-59. Regardless of all of this, there's always 'Rule 1'. PRTRAINMAN

  20. Received my July BRM yesterday & excellent article by Gilbert on fiddle-yard planning. Particularly useful to me as I am currently working on the design of my 'retirement-project' layout. Just thought I would point-out however that the type-setting gremlins have been at work on the article on my copy of the magazine. I needed to jump from the end of the 1st column on page 81 to whole of page 82 & then back to 2nd & 3rd columns on page 81, then to page 83 to get everything in order. I don't know if all copies of the magazine are the same but I thought I would point that out in case others are having problems making sense of things.
  21. John, I have only just come across this topic. I am not sure if it's the same as the one that you mention in your 1st post but there's a photo of green-liveried no.182 in volume 1 no 3 (Aug-Sept '91) edition of Modeller's BackTrack. The photo was taken by Dick Riley & shows the car in a train passing through Gypsy Hill. There's also a b&w broadside photo of No 184 (ex Theodora) in Kidner's 'Pullman Cars on the Southern'. The book alos includes a drawing of 'Barbara' & appears to show it as 66ft plus one quarter inch over buffers. Hope that is not too late to help. Philip
  22. Apologies if this is the wrong place for asking this but can somebody tell me whether any of these pullmans or the earlier match-boarded ones would be suitable for renaming/numbering to create a 'Kentish Belle' rake?
