  2. Thank you Roger, a useful piece of research/collation of information. To add to Brian’s comments, all the East Cornwall/West Devon disused lines make fascinating exploratory walks. There are many relics to see if you know where to look. (and I’m not talking about anyone looking at me!). Paul

  4. My suggestion re small money transfer, is to post them a euro/swiss franc note of the next highest amount by insured post. If it’s a really small amount then don’t even insure it, with fingers crossed! Saves mucking around with money transfer firms. I’ve used this method a few times with 100% success (not BEMO though).

  6. Nothing to do with the railway, but the brick building lower centre is Addington Street School, where both my mother and grandmother attended, 80 and 100 years ago. Thanks for sharing this image.

  8. Here is an Edgar Allen cast iron inset track point lever cover. Just in case you wanted something a bit more decorative. It is 11cm x 119cm.
  9. At Devonport Dockyard they were (are) a real menace to maintain as they always were filling up with silt and other rubbish (I am of course referring to the prototype!). The shunter ended up ignoring the lever and used a flat ended bar to push the point-blade over.
  10. Devonport Dockyard had a half-hourly passenger service from one end to the other (it was a very long narrow site, with separate sections). Full details in the book Devonport Dockyard Railway by Paul Burkhalter, now sadly OOP but available from libraries. It was unique in having six classes of carriages, all former goods wagons.

  12. The tunnels map is a bit mis-named, as it shows one between Wandsworth Road and Clapham Junction, which is actually a long underbridge (under the SW main line). I appreciate there's no difference to a casual user, but will there be other locations similar to this?

  15. Having been frequently close to these flasks, they are massive! Hence the size of the two MoD owned wagons. Shielding is very effective and closely monitored. The escort coaches have monitoring staff on board while en-route from Devonport to Sellafield.
  16. The latest Railway Magazine has this entry (page 54) in the "From the RM Archives" section: "From August 29 [1998], Sellafield based Direct Rail Services took over all nuclear flask traffic following the winning of the haulage contract." Not sure if that adds anything!
  17. I was in Denia last week and observed that the station area track, plus about 1km, appeared complete with even signal aspects showing. However the track was disconnected across a temporary road junction, with nothing seemingly happening.
  18. You are referring to the Lee Moor Tramway crossing the GWR, the former was 4'6" gauge.
  19. I seem to recall that it is to go north (someone correct me if my recollection is wrong), and I wondered if it would be denamed. Though the plates were never re-attached after a works visit some years ago. Reported elsewhere that the fire was in the battery box.

  23. Reported elsewhere that it was the turbocharger, and set at Long Rock under investigation by MTU.
  24. It can only be conjecture as to what would have become of the old line. At best it would have been downgraded to a freight only line, but would not have survived very long after WW2.
