  1. I've also used real coal, a little trick I came up with: put small fragments in a salt/pepper-grinder (available at pound shops) this gives a good variation of size, especially useful when working in N Scale....
  2. Sitting at the pub enjoying a cold pint and a beautiful view, unfortunately I'm "Currently Listening To" a millennial that won't shut the heck up about herself! Sorry, I know that's not the theme of this thread - just needed to vent....
  3. It sounds like a nice little project, keep us posted won't you?
  4. So, how over scale would it look? Maybe you could modify it a bit, add extra lateral struts using plastic rod, upright supports could also be made without much effort etc (not a difficult job!)
  5. You'll see his sketches of what I think was called "A Handling Machine" with his signature alongside, this wasn't part of the LP sleeve...
  6. A certain Mr. Michael Trim (painter of the Jeff Wayne "War of the World's" album cover, and indeed designer of the War Machines themselves, see later CD version inlay cards) finally got a credit for this show, after contributing to many of Anderson's previous projects. I studied graphic design under Mike's tutorage, a really nice bloke. PS, wasn't it Kent Brockman who welcomed our ANT overlords....?
  7. I like the idea but have to agree with Kris, also - even the locos that do work can look a bit odd using these points. I've used them in fiddle yards with no problems in the past. You can sometimes get streamline ones cheap online... PS, Do you have an image of the canopies you intend to use?
  8. Spotted yesterday, out of use post box: This morning on the beach, something that would make a nice 00 gauge tree:
  9. Did anybody ever see the episode of "Friends" where Monica finds a light switch in her apartment that doesn't seem to operate anything? She skips work, tears up the floor and destroys most of the wall, she even goes to city hall to get original plans of the building - I'm verging on that kind of curious...
  10. They each have a grating nearby, I don't know if that means anything. Having looked up and down the section of promenade at the foot of the embankment, I can see no evidence of any outlets. How hard do you think it would be to surreptitiously remove the section of timber under the slab....?
  11. More Pics to Shed Light / Confuse: The "East" box, just visible - as seen from the promenade: The wall at the base of the embankment, in line with the "west" box - note the holes at regular intervals along the wall (I recall beach huts here in the 80's.) Back at the cliff top, could be unrelated - drainage grating under wall, seems like neither could be moved! (Box visible in background.) Ably assisted by my faithful hound... Opposite the boxes, two sets of steps - all that remains of something grander(?) The view from the above position, showing the boxes on either side: Any the wiser...?
  12. Point of order - Mrs Richards, Mrs Alice Richards.
  13. Perhaps they're beer Mines? (Harbottle - Ask a Policeman)
  14. True story, this part of town has had trouble with unruly youths - so a dispersal order is in effect: But when you consider the name it's got, are you surprised misbehaving teens hang out there?:
  15. I took some more pics, although I'm none the wiser! The boxes are about sixty steps apart, so about 40-45 yards between them, the boxes on the bridge ends are of different construction, glazed brickwork with bevelled edges on the capping stones - they stand at about five feet high and each have steel panel door on them. On inspection, they bear little resemblance to the mystery boxes. Detail of wooden insert, it has nails in - not fully hammered in: What the "west" box overlooks, an embankment with a footpath dividing it: The "East" box, embankment leading to promenade: Rear view, no opening or other features: I'm thinking that the gas release valve theory might be the likeliest....
  16. I've taken some detail pics of that, they are in the "Little Things" thread if you want a closer look.
  17. They are of a similar construction aren't they? Would they put solid capping stones on top and then make holes for wiring etc though? Next time I'm down that way, maybe today, I'll have a closer look (if anyone wants specific photographic details, let me know?) Cheers.
