  1. J6038 Grantham. I wish someone did those concrete station lamps, a very distinctive feature of platforms across the east of the country (and possibly further afield) in the 50s-70s. Gone by 1980 as well, looking at the sequence of photos.I know there is a straggler surviving at Cleethorpes, not sure if there are any others.
  2. Great news, what am I going to do with all those Shawplan bits for Bachmann Deltics? I think I’m correct in saying there wasn’t a plated cab windows/plated over sandbox hatch/alphanumeric headcode combination in BR days. Will the late BR ones have York crests?
  3. No, Les Ross is painted Electric Blue, which is not what the AL6s carried when built.
  4. Agreed Clive, hence the question. “Les Ross” is the only Electric Blue 86, and it looks a bit gaudy to my eyes.
  5. I’d like to know what the colour difference is between the BR blue and Rail blue variants listed.
  6. In the photo J187 from yesterday can be seen the large wooden running in board in NER tangerine. Recently I was surprised to see that the remains of this still exist in the bushes and general mess that characterises the modern railway.
  7. Looks like the doors and cabin ends are painted a light colour, certainly not bauxite.
  8. I noticed a distinct bounce as trains crossed on the double track, and saw an inspection take place a few days ago. They don’t seem to have a speed restriction in place though. Trains heading south (away from the camera) on the main single track seem to take a distinct dip to the right at just about the point the track from the right comes alongside, too. Deshler has interesting vintage colour light signalling on the single lines as well.
  9. The larger arrows are 2ft 6in across, as opposed to 2ft which became the standard size, with the height being larger in proportion. I think the two coexisted with the larger size falling out of use around the mid 70s.
  10. The 114s were certainly in regular use at York and around the southern end of the NE Region. I don’t think they were found regularly north of York on the ECML though.
  11. J5645 Is a 44, not a 45, the top of a headcode disk is just visible. How many got TOPS numbers at both ends? That should narrow that one down a bit
  12. The black grommet around the headcode glass was fairly unusual, that might help identify it.
  13. Both still there this afternoon, visible from the A10.
  14. Fenn drawings should be viewed with a degree of caution, though.
  15. Original style oversize set numbers would be nice too. But it’s good to see the unit back in blue/grey, thanks to all involved in this initiative.
  16. That's the first photo I've seen of a Gloucester in passenger service in N Yorkshire (albeit on a special). The only other Gloucester photos I've seen are of the Stourton Saloon in departmental service. Thanks for posting Dave.
  17. There was at least one 46 with this arrangement too, I photographed it at York around 1980 (unfortunately the shot isn't to hand so I can't state the number).
  18. We have one in a drawer at work, it was used to photograph old maps and documents at arms length. It still works but modern mobile phone cameras easily outclass it for results.
  19. No images, but it's near the foot crossing on the down side, by the entrance to the station and car park.
  20. The Arco Transacord album of Western recordings has a long clip recorded at Reading station which features a pre-refurb 50 arriving (and a Hymek on a coke train too). It's only a short part of the clip but does give a flavour.
  21. It usually stays live for at least 5 minutes, Mick, sometimes longer. The sound is a recent (and very welcome) addition.
  22. I'd check anything in the Marsden/Fenn book very carefully against photos, though.
  23. I saw 44004/5/10 at York in 1974/5 working coal specials formed of 24.5t hoppers, which they came off at York Yard North before heading straight back south.
